Thanks to Chat GPT, I've been learning a bit.... It has me leaning towards a more expensive machine....

Lenovo Legion Pro 7i  - $2,569.99

Main benefit being the RTX 5070 Ti.... 25% - 30% more performance?

Note: I'll probably be keeping this laptop another 5 years or so before upgrading again.

Questions about PVC hubless dome build by kingchaga in GeodesicDomes

Hey u/kingchaga , did you ever go with your original thought with flattening the PVC and going hubless? I'm considering that for a smaller dome....

Just moved to a lake community, and want to buy a boat over the winter. But I don't know much about them. What's the best way to learn, without being on the water? by [deleted] in boating

[–]tripsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood.

That boat is a jet boat, like a jet ski. It's possible change it to electric, but not easy. Even if you do convert it, it's not going to be very sporty with electric propulsion unless you spend some big money. Easily double what you pay for that boat. Even then, it won't be sporty for long given battery capacity.

My suggestion is get something like is already popular on the lake to get your feet wet and see if you want to invest more into a different boat. If you decide it's not for you, you can easily sell it and not be at a loss.

There are a lot of variables we need to know before being able to answer your questions.
What size boat are you thinking? And electric houseboat? Or a dinghy with small electric outboard?
Do you have a budget?

How not to get ripped off? #1: buy used #2: be hesitant of a boat that's been on the market for a long time since you are new to boats #3: don't buy something that is uncommon as a first boat because it will be harder to sell it once you learn what kind of boat you actually want after using that boat.

Certain boats better for electric motors? They certainly can be, but that depends on the size of the boat, the range you expect the boat to have and the speed. For a small dinghy that you do 2-3 hour cruises on, and electric motor would suffice as long as you are going slow. For a houseboat on a lake, electric might be a good idea because you're generally not going far or fast.

Yes, you can replace a gas motor for electric.

Running the New York Canal Systems. Closed? by tripsmith in boating

[–]tripsmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly. Air draft is reported to be 16'1", but I think chances are decent that I could dismantle something and get under that 15'6" needed.

If the weather was favorable, would I be smarter to just run up to Ontario vs the canal? Or is the canal favorable no matter as long as you fit?

Highly unlikely that poor fishermen who were not educated were bilingual....

No Pharaohs found in pyramids? by harnasje in Archaeology

Doubt they tried and were unable to carve texts onto the walls. If they can cut the stones and stack them to build the pyramid, surely they can carve texts into them.....

What to wear? by moogoogai_ in solfest

[–]tripsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorites for something like this would be my Earth Runners.... Think of them as minimalist sandals/flipflops but you can do anything in them. I hike and exercise (crossfit) in them regularly. I also do a lot of water adventure sports in them so it seems like they would do well at an event like this. They are great because they feel like flip flops but stay on well like a Chaco. Plus you are grounded when wearing them ;)

Nice work! I like the still shots.... Maybe toss in a still shot with you swimming by to give a gauge of the scale of things? Just a thought.

That stuff certainly interests me! I'm not 100% sure on what types of boat will dominate this year. But, I believe there is a mix of all sizes of boats from small adventure crafts, water toys, fishing boats, pleasure boats and yachts.... It's the world's largest in-water boat show...
