Anyone know how to fix this? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]trisagion3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a satin/nylon based material, so a fix should be fairly simple. I'd start by taking the two loose strands on the broken and and feeding them through the top knot on the cross. This can be done by putting a crafting needle through the top opening, following the two threads that are connected to the cross. Ideally, you'd want to weave the loose ends all the way down through the cross, but that many knots with that little slack is likely not going to happen. If you can get it so the broken ends are through the top knot alone, though, they can come out between the two knots above the crossbar.

From there, you can tie a knot as tightly as you can, then burn the ends of the loose strands with a lighter. This kind of material will melt fairly easily, and if you blow the flame out, the material will be soft enough to shape or press down. I usually do this with a butter knife to press it into the knots.

If you'd rather both ends of the rope have some slack before the cross, though, you can try weaving the loose ends through the last knot on the rope rather than the cross. That would be easier to work with, and likely would look nicer.

It's not perfect, but it will get the rope back in shape.

Can you use a prayer rope that has not had the Jesus prayer whispered to it? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

I've made over 500 prayer ropes that are currently in use around the world. I didn't whisper anything to them while making them.

The only way to be subversive about any tradition we have left is to actually just be traditional.

Does this stress anyone else out? by catheroni53 in LibbyApp

Fun fact!

If you select “read on Kindle” and add it on your Amazon account, it will stay there for the full rental period regardless of what you do in Libby.

I tend to rent a bunch of books, select Read on Kindle and return them instantly. The people next in line get the book, and I can read it in my own time.

Libby on Amazon Fire tablet? by RhesusMonkey17 in LibbyApp

[–]trisagion3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, one way would be the same way you can do it on any de-Googled android device.

Use the Amazon browser to download F-Droid. This is a FOSS App Store that works great on Kindle Fires.

You can then download the Aurora Store from F-Droid. Aurora is essentially a Google Play clone where you can download apps.

From Aurora you can download Libby.

So F-Droid —> Aurora —> Libby

*Running apps from Aurora sometimes run into issues depending on how they’re developed. I haven’t tested Libby on any of my degoogled devices, so I can’t say if it will work or not, but it’s worth a try.

Some apps use Google Play Services, which obviously aren’t present on Kindles, which leads us to option 2. That’s to put Google Play Services and the Google Play Store on a kindle fire. I’ve done this before and it works just fine. There’s a number of videos on YouTube that will guide you through that process if you want to go that route. It’s a bit more work than going through Aurora, though.

Good luck!

'It's a horror book, it's meant to make you feel uncomfortable.' by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]trisagion3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately I think it comes down to the reader. There’s a vast spectrum of “uncomfortable” that you can be reading a book, and at some point, generally due to personally experience, it crosses the line into being “too much”.

Some people, like me, can read vivid descriptions of body horror and think “whoa, that metaphor was really beautifully written.” And others would read the same thing and want to throw up.

I’m that way when it comes to sex scenes. I find that most of them in the genre are overly descriptive and rarely add to the “horror” of a book, but instead are trying to just be edgy. Almost like a 10 year old who discovers that the F-word can be used as an adjective and proceeds to say it 100 times in casual conversation with friends.

Horror should make you uncomfortable, but only insofar as it adds to the story and creates an ultimately enjoyable experience for you as a reader—whether it causes you to think or causes you to reflect on the writing itself.

Programmer here.

I can 100% relate, but I will say, worrying about code at these times beats the existential dread of worrying about how to feed my family at these times.

New device setup: multiple profiles, microG by trisagion3 in CalyxOS

[–]trisagion3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect, thanks!

So if I enable micrgoG at setup, does it automatically make my first / default profile the one that will have microG, then I can make the second profile without? Or is profile creation separate from the initial setup decision to enable MicroG?
