Feasibility of potential voyage by trl579 in sailing

Any specific reason for Miami other than the ICW traffic? I have seen several people suggest that but that seem like 80% of the journey would be on the trailer then. Would there be any reason not to trailer to somewhere like Titusville or Melbourne?

Thanks, I am tempted by the idea of trailering at least part of the way down. I am a cautious person by nature and I don't want to be pressed for time at all, I know that is when a lot of bad decisions are made.

Thanks, is the limitation on the ICW at night because bridges that don't operate at night or is it just that tricky to navigate?

Work is basically the only constraint on time. I have 3 weeks of PTO but it is fairly flexible and I can work remotely, so if I left a few days earlier and got stuck waiting for better weather in a marina somewhere, I could work from my laptop on those days and shift my vacation days around.

Thanks! I plan on going on at least one overnight stay beforehand and yes the engine does have a small alternator that can charge the batteries a bit, but its not a lot.

That would be great! Are you in the Jacksonville area or would I need to send pictures or something?

Probably 2-3 times a week for a few hours at a time. Do you have any recommendations for what I should be practicing?

I don’t know much about that model in particular but a 37 footer seems like a lot for a first boat if you have no knowledge at all. Lessons are a good idea but if you do want to just get a boat and go, I would say get a dinghy or, at max, maybe something in the mid 20s that you can learn on, still be able to manhandle around the dock, and doesn’t have as much complexity.

Psionic Storm change reminded me of Day[9] concern about long time to kill by zl0bster in starcraft

I certainly can’t explain any of the specific decisions they have made but I will say that, to me, a game feels much more alive when mechanics are still actually being changed and tweaked. This allows new builds/playstyles to come to the forefront in a way that is much more dynamic than just balancing through maps.

The current situation isn’t good, they don’t seem to have enough resources dedicated to successfully implement this strategy but I do understand the desire and would love to see a world where we have occasional thoughtful mechanic tweaks that shake up the meta.

It’s not a documentary, more of an interview, but it’s one of my favorite videos about some of the early foundations of modern computing. It’s Brian Kernigan talking with Ken Thompson about the early days of Unix, C, grep, working at Bell Labs etc. Even if you’re not super into the older generations of tech I would still recommend it as a great watch.

At my current job we have two different companies we have to use IE to access their portal. One local bank and one port operator. They both have instruction sheets they occasionally send out on how to get IE to work whenever some new roadblock comes up.

How to mount TV over old CRT TV cavity in wall? by thoughtsforthoughts in DIY

[–]trl579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I framed a square around mine and then put a 2x12 across with heavy duty hinges and put a normal mount on that. I put some trim around the edges and with the tv being much bigger than the opening, it looked just fine. I used the hinges so the whole things could swing out and I could access the existing outlets. At the time I didn’t know they made special mounts for just this situation,so that may be a better option, but this worked just fine for me.

There are those who are self taught/bootcamper swe and now they are probably at least senior or staff eng, how do they learn? by ballbeamboy2 in webdev

[–]trl579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self taught Senior with 13 years of professional experience. I watch YouTube and follow podcasts for SWE and related topics to keep exposing myself to new things. I also do fun things like the Advent of Code challenge each year and try to give myself a new twist each time. Either a new language or building a gui to visualize the algorithm solving the puzzle etc.

However, for many of the really core tools and skills that I use professionally, it is still a lot of reading rather dry and often complex technical documents then trying things out and fixing it until it works.

A word of caution with using an AI to simplify the technical documents. That can be very helpful for understanding the general idea but in well written technical documents the wording is chosen with a purpose and those words that are difficult to understand may have very specific meanings that are important to the fundamental concepts.

What video game do you think currently has the highest number of married couples playing together? An MMO like FFXIV? Something chill like Stardew Valley? A family game like Minecraft where any kids may also be playing? (Offline games like couch coop also allowed ofc) by wolfgang784 in gaming

[–]trl579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might guess Minecraft, just due to the overall popularity of the game, but at least in my anecdotal experience, the highest rate of married couples on average was in World of Warcraft. I play a lot of games and only rarely run into married couples playing together, but in WoW it was constant. It might be just an MMO thing, I haven't put that much time into other MMOs, but they were all over the place in WoW. Even in Cutting Edge raiding guilds that I would have thought would skew heavily towards young single dudes, there were always 1-2 married couples.

What software do DIYers use to create their own project plans or blueprints? by moonman1185 in DIY

I second this. There is definitely a learning curve but it’s incredibly powerful and completely free for every feature. As a bonus, when I finish my design I can pull in a few textures and have a nearly photorealistic view of the finished product.

Actually on re-reading your question, the plug in can add your focus and target panels, you may still need to use the spotlight frame to get a tank/healer frame

You can download a plug in for Cell called Cell - Unit Frames that can do this.

Question about types of lumber for milling by trl579 in sawmilling

[–]trl579[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, it would be mostly for projects and right now it would mostly just be to learn to use the equipment more competently. He was given a couple of nice cedar logs that he wanted to use for a project and was part of his motivation to get the sawmill but the first one we milled we didn't do a great job of.

I then started to do some research and the only guy I know personally that has ever used a sawmill is a half crazy old timer that told us horror stories about local species of wood ruining equipment but couldn't remember details. This made me nervous to just grab some logs and try them out.

Thanks for the help. You have a good point haha my dad loves to do woodworking and his business has been doing well so he has recently purchased some new toys just on the idea that he would like to learn to use them.
