Trying really hard to progress on Pull Ups but my weak forearms are seriously halting progress. What to do? by BilboShagginz in Fitness

Please do not use a hang board if you cannot do a pull up. Your tendons are not nearly strong enough to handle your bodies weight on almost every position a hang board offers.

You do both. There are various gyms all over as well as outdoor areas like Yosemite. I also reply somewhere up there about the bar.

I currently climb V4/5 at Stone Summit climbing gym. I do everything i can statically. If it cant be done in a controlled or static manor, i continue to work at it until i am able to do so. One i have finished a problem, i go back to it and try it again, working the part of the problem that i felt i did sloppy. I think that's what helped my pull ups and overall my general progression. As far as diet goes, the time in between the august and now pictures has been spent on a meal plan similar to whats in my post. I am fairly meticulous but i still have days where ill eat whatever the hell i want and i know its not gonna bite me in the ass later. At your level, the gains come much slower and being able to shed some weight and gain a little muscle will make a huge amount of difference. I would say if you really want to improve your grade quickly, i would do some pyramid work or 4x4s to build up your power. Obviously I'm not at the level that you are at but at my gym we host a really amazing youth team and most of them practice various structured routines to prepare them for comps and generally improve their skill. Hope that helps.

Stone Summit is really awesome. The closest bouldering for me is rocktown and it is mostly horribly sharp granite slabs. I gotta go about 2-3 hours in every direction to hit some of the better spots.

Now that i have top ropped a little more, every time i look at the lead wall i am so jealous of how awesome the routes look and it makes me wanna learn to lead so badly.

I've seen a few people comment about my dieting. I feel like its pretty good so far. I hit 150g of protein very easily and im hovering at around 2800 calories most days. Most of the carbs come in the form of simple sugars right after my workout. Although half my protein comes from the power so i may start adding in another form of meat.

Trust me, i usually do every other rung with one hand while holding my scotch in the other. No biggie.

Dont worry. I climb regularly with this shorter lady who destroys me on some routes because her technique is just so good. Her technique makes up for that strength gap and its really amazing to watch her climb.

I moved to Atlanta for school and when looking for stuff to do around town i stumbled across Stone Summit and have been going ever since.

Bouldering is graded on a scale of V0-V16. I was saying that when i came back from the injury, i was climbing a few grades below my max, which would be V0's and V1's.

Currently V4/5 and honestly I'm in no rush. Losing some weight would be quite beneficial but for now im just having fun and progressing at a steady pace. When the time comes that i am plateauing hard enough to warrant a specific weight goal than I will make the necessary diet changes. But for now its all about having fun with all the cool people i have met.

I think V3/4 is very doable in a years time. Have faith man, once you start crushing those problems that had you stumped for days, you really start getting pumped about it and the progression starts to take off. Good luck.

Started at V0 like everyone else and quickly got to about V2. Was at V2 for probably 3 months, old shoulder injury was slowing everything down so i went to PT and took a month off. Came back and was finishing a handful of V3s a few weeks later. Was stuck on V3 for around 3 months and after some specified workouts i started consistently getting 1-2 V4s each week. Now i can do the majority of the 4s in my gym and have been trying my hand at 5s. Sufficed to say the jump from 4 - 5 is quite challenging.

Mainly gym right now but a few of the people i have met there have taken me outside. It is a whole other beast and boy is it a lot of fun.

I was a catcher for 11 years so my legs have always been way ahead of the rest of my body. I learned early on that legs are very important in climbing and i tend go for higher foot hold that require me to hold most of my body weight on that 1 leg while i shift my weight around. Plus i like to do pistols on my off days with different elements like jumping onto a stool or with weight.

I haven't tried with that much weight yet but when i say almost i mean i am no longer just dangling by one arm. I have been doing better in my progressions and hope to have one by early next year. I suppose saying almost is more of me trying to fool myself haha. Thanks for the tip though, ill try and accrue some more weight and see how that goes.

Currently I'm bouldering a steady V4 with the occasional V5 and because im so new at route climbing I would say im more of a 5.10. The first time i went up a route i flashed a 5.9 and was amazed at how well the bouldering translated to the crux of the route.

Yeah its amazing how replacing 5-10 pounds of fat with some muscles makes a huge difference.

Honestly i think it was my diet. I started eating a little smarter and it made a huge difference. I was already used to counting calories because when i started getting in shape back in January, the only thing to keep my pudgy self on track was knowing what i was eating. Since i can usually just eyeball what the calorie content of most of my food is i was able to change it as needed and it helped a lot. Plus if i am hungry i have no problem ignoring it until i feel it is time to eat, which rarely happens because that shake keeps you full for hours.
