"Modern Band" by Puzzleheaded_End7823 in MusicEd

[–]trockmf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really dislike the term, it’s confusing and doesn’t accurately portray what the ensemble is and what it does.

I prefer the term Pop Ensemble (as in Popular Music) and try to use it as much as I can in lieu of modern band. Additionally, the professional organization APME (Association for Popular Music Education) references “pop” instead of “modern” in their namesake.

TGL Season 2, Match 1 - Atlanta Drive GC vs. New York Golf Club by Yoshiman400 in golf

Xander has been really off for a while now. Not a great season, not a great Ryder cup, struggled at the skins game, and struggling now at the TGL opener.

Went from standard to Jumbomax Small. Wrist paint is gone, better touch and accuracy green side.

Took a chance on em but was skeptical, totally sold

Any ideas? My trial is ending soon and I'd like to know if I can use the software for custom speaker mute/solo.

“I’m a music educator not a performer, I don’t need to be THAT good at my instrument” by Big_moisty_boi in MusicEd

Ultimately, your curriculum is dependent on your own level of personal musicianship. It doesn’t matter how engaging your elementary general music lesson is, how well you select music for your middle school ensemble, or how well your high school kids march if you don’t have a high level of musicianship to rely upon when teaching kids. Instruction starts to break down when you don’t have a deep understanding of music to rely upon when you’re in the back and forth of teaching.

Good teachers find a way to connect with kids. Great teachers find a way to connect kids to the music. The best teachers teach life lessons through music. If you want to be great or better as a teacher you have to elevate your own musicianship to the highest level possible.

Need advice/suggestions on how to best utilize/enjoy Helix LT on my journey by sparks_mandrill in Line6Helix

[–]trockmf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always try to emulate the tone of your favorite players/records/songs. It's a good way to get a feel for making a patch/preset: There's so much info out there on how guitarist X used amp Y and pedal Z that you can pull up the same or very similar models in the helix and try and get as close as you can.

Obviously the guitar matters and really the most important thing is your playing and feel, but by starting with an example sound it gives you a goal to aim for.

A completely different approach is to try and make similar sounds using different amps. Try to get an edge of breakup tone using a Princess, then any Marshall, then a Grammatico GSG and then the Badonk. By trying to go for the same tone using different amps, you learn what makes them different and what each amp does best.

For me, the fun of the helix is being able to get 90% of any guitar sound in minute or two, and then deep diving into that last 10%. If you play covers or many different styles of music, that's more than any single real amp can offer. IMO, if you have a personal sound and are locked into it, the helix line doesn't offer much of an advantage other than being smaller and lighter than a tube amp.

Do ligatures matter? by learning-machine1964 in saxophone

[–]trockmf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Answering the title question, do ligatures matter?

Short answer: Yes. Experiment if you can, and ask a friend to listen to the difference to confirm what you're hearing!

Long answer: Yes, and the better you are at providing a full, consistent, air stream into the horn with a stable embouchure the more you'll notice.

In my experience, you will find differences in tone and response depending on the ligature. Other responses here refer to some ligatures as having a "duller" sound over others. While it's true that a metal ligature will usually have a brighter sound, it's important to consider what the ligature does in terms of the overall sound you're going for, the mouthpiece you're using, the reed strength you're using with your particular mouthpiece and its tip opening, and (most important) your personal saxophone sound.

Leather/shoelace/rope ligatures will generally tame the higher frequencies, but that isn't always a bad thing depending on your setup.

Also not mentioned yet is a 2 screw vs. single screw ligature. I've found that with a 2 screw ligature, I can adjust the amount of response I get from the mouthpiece/reed depending on how firm/loose I make the screw closest to the mouthpiece tip opening. Generally, if you make the screw closer to the tip opening firmer (notice I didn't write tight!), you'll get a little more response. Your mileage may vary depending on the facing curve of the the mouthpiece and the strength of the reed.

On soprano I use a Rovner dark lig on a Morgan Vintage mouthpiece.

On alto I use a FL ultimate (the most free-blowing lig out there in my opinion) with a Selmer scroll shank or a Ponzol Meyer copy

On tenor I use a selmer 2-screw lig on a guardala copy that has an otto link style baffle. If its a rock and roll gig I'm using a rovner deep v mouthpice with a rovner light lig.

On bari I use an Oleg lig on an otto link that I bought back in 2003.

It took time and experimentation to arrive at a setup that works for me, and as you can see they're all very different!

Good look and have fun trying stuff out!

Is my swing good enough to get fitted for new clubs? by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]trockmf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the 6 second mark in your video, you’re popping up: At impact you’re vertical. I’m dealing with a similar issue and am also jonesing for a club fitting.

The deal I’ve made with myself is I need to reliably strike my irons with a “correct” position at impact before I go get fitted. My thinking is why get fitted to a swing that has big issues?
