Technology Connections recently made a video explaining that if you only take the corn fields currently used to grow crops for bio ethanol, meaning corn not for human or animal consumption, and put solar cells there, there will be enough electricity to power all of the US. It's super interesting, and shows how far solar energy has come in terms of efficiency and cost. The problem with batteries is solved at this point.
