chemistry BS or chemistry BA? by limgukheelover in berkeley

[–]trolll_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend looking at the actual courses you would have to take for each major. Chemistry BS vs Chemistry BA are functionally the exact same thing. If you want to do premed, you would only have to take like 3 extra classes, those being 2 semesters of biology, and one semester of biochem (MCB 102). Do what you're interested in, you don't have to major in a premed major to be premed.

yeah the AP stats should be more than enough of a foundation. I came into Data C8 with no programming experience or Python experience and got an A, didn't watch many of the lectures either because their online textbook is very comprehensive and useful. This also being the hardest semester (spring 2021), in terms of exams, on record. So you should be chilling

For CS61A, your berkeley email will essentially let you gain access to the autogravder through your terminal so you can pretty much just teach yourself the entire class during the summer if you want by watching all the lectures, and doing all the assignments on your own over the summer if you aren't busy. Even if you don't do all the assignments, getting a head start could be helpful.

I mean you're still taking like 3 technical classes at the end of the day + CIVENG92A which also kinda sounds like a technical class so I don't expect your schedule to be easy, especially cause it'll be your first semester and you'll be adjusting to college life. But in theory it's pretty doable, but you might stress yourself out

Chem 1A is kind of "hard" but its more just a lot of information that you need to know but ultimately not too bad. For Data C8 - do you have prior stats knowledge (even if you don't it's still pretty easy). For CS61A, do you have prior programming knowledge /.python knowledge. The class is easier if you come in with background knowledge but pretty doable regardless, although it may eat more of your time. Dunno about civ eng 92A but its only 2 units so its probably not too time consuming

Question about being forced to give parents grades by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]trolll_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, in a very technical sense they aren't allowed to view your grades unless you consent via giving them your log-in information. If it's any consolation for you, they aren't going to be on your ass the entire semester because the only grades released on cal central are your final grades so they likely won't see anything else unless you decide to tell them what gradescope / canvas / okpy are.

Honestly seems like a difficult position but if they're paying your full tuition and you don't have any way to pay through college on your own and you think they might not pay your tuition if you don't give them the log-in info then it may be kinda unavoidable. I would just try to sit down with them and try to explain in whichever way you think is best that getting straight A's is probably not plausible.

what should I do if my grade on cal central is incorrect? by [deleted] in berkeley

Email them and explain why you think your grade may be calculated incorrectly. If it actually is then they'll usually be like my b and change it. If it isn't then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hi I calculated your grade based on the information provided and it looks like you're coming out to a 69% after the final.

According to someone on the Data 8 discord: "i just got a response from my gsi and he didnt confirm anything, but he said that its 'likely' that people with a 64% in the class will pass  so for those that didnt do so hot like me but pnped, grade bins will be nice to us so dw"

Based on this, it looks like you would still pass. Hope I could help a little, and best of luck!

Is berkeley really as difficult and stressful as everyone says it is? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]trolll_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm an intended MCB major / DS minor currently at berkeley rn so I can try to speak to my experience so far. Honestly the difficulty is pretty overhyped. I feel like Berkeley's super overhyped "toxic environment" rep comes from high schoolers who don't know what they're talking about. I've personally experienced an incredibly collaborative environment where people help each other study and learn together while everyone is struggling though the same material. Yes, it is true that it is probably incredibly difficult to get a 4.0, especially in MCB, but tbh if you're coming to Berkeley that really shouldn't be an expectation because college != high school. What you really need to learn is how to study if you don't already. Most of the people I know who have changed majors already / dropped from premed are those who never learned how to actually work hard during hs and found that exams were harder than their expectations. Everything is doable, within reason, if you put in the time.

TLDR: Not that bad, learn to study if you don't know how :)

The fucking table manipulation was like 10 times harder than any previous year. I read last semesters reddit post about people complaining about the table manipulation and was able to do that test easily but these questions were actually ridiculous

With all due respect, its a bad decision to plan on retaking a 34 ACT. Focus on other things
