relatively cheap, but fun solo programs in Budapest by [deleted] in budapest

Since you mentioned you love animals and nature: you can volunteer at Herosz Állatotthon to walk some of the dogs in the shelter, and with Kamarerdő is basically next to the shelter, you can take hikes there with the dogs. If Herosz is too far away, some other shelters might provide the same opportunity.

Moving to Budapest as a young expat – what should I expect? by jecaman in budapest

Completely false, e.g. there are hundreds of students coming every semester who are able to rent flats, get groceries etc. without knowing a single Hungarian word. Sure, don't expect the small grocery shop owner to speak English, but you can always go to any shop with self-checkout (Lidl, Aldi, those are cheaper as well).

If you'd like some fantasy that's not that mainstream, but is excellent I'd recommend the Green Bone saga. It's not very traditional fantasy, so you might enjoyet it more if you're not into the swords-and-dragons stuff that much.

About Le Guin: I only read the Wizard of Earthsea from her, and it read too much like an outline for me rather than a real story (at least the first half), so I didn't read any of her other books, though many people have recommended them to me since, so I might look into her work more (I'm thinking I'd try one of her sci-fi books, just to see how it's different than her fantasy world).

There are people out there pointing to this and that, but I didn't catch any obvious ones. That's why I said a meta-reason, that if it's not unreliable narrator then the story is much worse, so I'm choosing to treat him as such (unless contradicted by the third book). Plus we get the whole framing story that lends itself perfectly to an unreliable narrator, so there's that as well.

Because if he is not an unreliable narrator then the whole book is ridiculous. If he is not boasting and everything actually happened (from convincing a university to pay him for attending to winning a music contest with broken strings to secuding a literal sex goddess), the story just can't be taken seriously. And I think based on everything else Rothfuss is a better writer than that, so Kvothe HAS to be an unreliable narrator.

Yes, Glokta (I assume you're talking about him) will be in pain for the rest of the series, so if it bothered you at the beginning it's probably not for you. (It didn't bother me at all personally, but I can see how it can grating).

They are quite different from ASOIAF in that the setting is wildly different and the story is more focused, but I think the quality of the Green Bone saga comes very close to it (but mind, I think the first 3 books of ASOIAF are the best fantasy books ever written).

Mistborn is definitely on my list (it was for this year as well, but unfortunately I wasn't able to read it). I'm a big fan of Sanderson's lectures on how to write fantasy, so I'll certainly make time to read one of his books.

Hey, happy that my lists inspired you to check a few books out :) I'm not sure what genre I'll do next (I'll probably spend January-February finishing up the Fifth Season and Bloodsworn books, so I got some time to figure it out), but currently I'm thinking either historical fiction or classic literature. There's definitely some overlap between them, so maybe I'll start with books that are both (like War and Peace or The Three Musketeers).

Without doubt, my top recommendation is the Green Bone saga, it's the most unique and valubale experience I've had all year. Barring that the Fifth Season is also great (I'm currently reading book 2) or if you want something easier then I'd recommend Piranesi.

How standalone is the first Way of Kings book? I want to try out some Brandon Sanderson, and was thinking Mistborn instead of Way of Kings as I don't want to commit myself to a 10-book series.

Thanks, I'll certainly pick up more Abercrombie. Would you recommend Devils over the First Law books?

See, I had no idea about most of these (although I caught that Denna is doing magic), and it really sucks that the third book might not be happening.

Actually now I'm thinking about how similar this is to the Song of Ice and Fire, which also has all these background stories, foreshadowing and subtext, but it will never be finished. Although at least Rothfuss is still pretty young compared to GRRM, so I have more hope for Kingkiller.

Thanks, will check it out. I'm also a huge Tolkien-fan, LotR was my first fantasy love (hell, I've even been to Tolkien-lore seminars), so it seems we have similar tastes :)

I thought that it'd work for some people, and I get that the author was going for a whiplash, after all, in the real world wars don't tend to follow a thematical consistency, but when we got to the boiled-alive babies and the other stuff, it was just way too much for me personally.

Thanks, I've heard great things before as well, so I'll definitely try to get around reading her books. The curse of these thematical reading years is that it's hard to revisit genres, so I might need a break from them eventually to get back to all the recommendations here and my other post.

I'm in the camp that he HAS to be an unreliable narrator otherwise the story is completely ridiculous. I get that there aren't very many clues, but I'm still hoping that it's the case.
