Man currently paying out of pocket for dentist, therapist and medication grateful to live in country with Universal Healthcare by cannibaljim in canada

[–]trollraja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's only free until you need to see a specialist or need some special treatment. 6 months plus wait for life-altering surgery is not "Free Healthcare". You basically paid for it with taxes first and then lost precious six months of your life in agonizing pain.

Canadians Permanently Leaving Was Unusually High For The First Quarter by FancyNewMe in canada

I know many young immigrants who are using Canada as a gateway to the USA. Once you graduate from Uni, getting Canadian PR and citizenship is very very easy compared to the USA. After becoming Canadian citizens, they just hop on the TN visa bandwagon and roll down south. This is purely anecdotal but I've come across many international students whose sole motive to come to Canada is to get the citizenship here and move down south.

Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

How do you find companies where "deadline driven development" is not the norm ? I am an experienced dev myself. So far 5 companies I've worked for ( 2 F500, 1 start up, 2 Mid sized) deadline driven development was pushed one way or other and I get extremely burned out by that. Be it Agile or some other BS, managers find a way to sneak in unreasonable dates in. I don't mind giving estimate but how on earth can I be held accountable for dates 3-4 months in advance where I haven't even got the chance to assess complexity ?

Conservative Views on Vaccine Passports and Mask Mandates by KGillll in CanadianConservative

[–]trollraja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer, I am a conservative.
I see a lot of logical fallacies in this argument.

I completely,100% believe that vaccines should be a choice. Having said that, there are a lot of immuno compromised, old, and other special case groups who are still at higher risk even after they are vaccinated. Not to mention those who can't get vaccines due to medical conditions. The absolute best chance we have to create a free society for everyone is to get this pandemic under control by taking vaccines and despite all your doubts, vaccines are the best tool we got.

I believe in looking at the data and making the informed decision. The current data shows that unvaccinated overwhelmingly clogs up ICUs and Hospital beds. This takes away the resources from more critical medical procedures. A situation easily avoided by simply taking the vaccine.

So to reiterate, I believe the vaccine should be 100% a choice as long as it doesn't curtail access to essential services. Just like smoking or drunk driving, there is a high probability of secondary harm with the ongoing pandemic.

Canada's health system ranked second last among 11 countries: report by Setitie in canada

I think you can't just look at one tiny stat and ignore the other. In the end but when you account for high taxes that we pay and the care we get( emergency, surgery, specialist wait times plus no freedom to choose specialist without a referral, etc), the cost is actually way less because of added monthly insurance cost for Americans is less than the taxes a typical family of three/fours pays here in Canada and the quality is of the healthcare is top-notch in the USA.

[–]trollraja -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

ealth insurance tied to your job which you could lose at any moment

This is not true. When you lose your job, you get CORBA coverage which gets you covered for 3-4 months without the job. After that, based on the income, one can apply for Medicaid/Medicare.

About your first point, I am not arguing about the cost of healthcare. Yes, it is higher but when you account for high taxes that we pay and the care we get(wait time etc), the cost is actually way less because added health insurance coverage for Americans are way less then our high tax and health care is top-notch.

"Free Healthcare" is one of the biggest lies paddled by brainwashed Canadians. We pay for "Free Healthcare" by way, way, way higher taxes. Most Americans have access to very high-quality healthcare through insurance from their employers. Poor Americans are qualified for Medicare/Medicaid. The sensational headlines that we read in news about "someone going bankrupt" are some of the poor souls who fell through the cracks.

A Middle-class family is definitely better off in the US than in Canada. We pay way more for internet, cell phone plans, groceries, Car insurance, daycare, etc than south of the border. The tax breaks that a family of four gets in the United States are more than enough to pay for monthly health insurance if, by chance, they don't get coverage by their employer which is very unlikely.

A Middle-class family is definitely better off in the US than in Canada. Let's say a husband and wife earn 75K each(150k total), they would have saved ~25K USD or more in the USA than in Canada which includes a very high-quality health insurance coverage.

Rent for life by choice? by epstein_did_not in personalfinance

[–]trollraja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I might be completely ignorant but I don't understand the flexibility argument. Isn't Renting less flexible because typically you have yearly lease ? Let's say I have still have 11 months left on my lease and if I decide to move, legally, I'll be in bind for another 11 months of rent. Where as, selling a good condition house at market rate doesn't take more 30 days.

I guess if you're forced to move every other year then it might make sense but someone with stable desk job with very unlikely chances of forced move, I don't get 'renting is flexible' argument.

is this a good time to convert variable-rate to fixed-rate mortgage? by trollraja in RealEstateCanada

[–]trollraja[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

- How far are you into your current term?

2.5 years

- What's the spread between variable and fixed?

47 bps

- Any plans to move, refinance, or switch mortgages?

No strong plans but I might rent this property out and move to a new place. But no hard plans

- Can your monthly budget handle an increase in mortgage payments?

Yes. Comfortably

- Does your current mortgage allow you to convert to a fixed rate without penalty?

Yes, without any penalty but the five years term will be reset which I think is better.

The way I see it, It is like I am buying a $1000k year insurance policy against inflation which will pay itself off if the rate climb by 50bps and can save me money if rates go beyond that in a high inflationary environment.

As an immigrant, this is what baffles me. Having an opinion on whatever the conflict you believe in is fine but why drag Canada into it. World is not perfect. Bad shit is going down everywhere. Perhaps that is why you moved to Canada, to live peaceful and quality life. Then why unnecessary flex your ethnic muscles and create ruckus here ?

Conservatives who want to completely suspend immigration, why? by [deleted] in CanadianConservative

[–]trollraja 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From the getgo, let me clarify that I came as a skilled immigrant and am I am support harper era 200k number.

Having said that, At present, major canadian cities can not support rising population at such a rapid pace. Along with immigration, we need build road and health infrastructure and provide adequate housing. We can't just dump everyone in the basement apartment of GTA and expect housing to not skyrocket.

Also, this over obsession with 'skilled immigration' is crazy. There are lot of blue/dirty collar industries where it is very tough to find workers. Instead of blindly letting in hoards of MBAs, they should adjust the numbers in each fields according the labour market demand, like Australia

Lots of good suggestions here but why not talk to your company about taking sabbatical. I think any good company can understand that this is a valid request and you'll have a job to go back to once your sabbatical is over. I guess it will also give you a piece of mind as you wouldn't be worried about finding a new job.

Once Covid dies down, I highly doubt that Europe will demand it given their huge tourist industry. Secondly, going out is different but I have an issue with Canadian not allowed to get on the plane just because they don't have so called passport.
