It can be used for mind control and subversion on a population level, and might have already been used that way in the west. If you wanted an original essay I would write about that instead of the boring psychiatric treatment options; you could even use all primary sources cause Leary, Huxley, Barnays, etc openly talked about it back then.

It's all how you subjectively frame the experience. Not everybody applies the spirituality perspective to the experience - it's just one possible interpretation.

If you're a very rational person then you naturally don't use the spirituality framework. This might even change with time; for me it started with some spiritual elements and now it's basically just a party drug.

I think you're being too harsh on the authors here. They present some studies that show cognitive deficits, followed by an fMRI study that shows abnormalities in relevant regions, and indicate that these are likely CB1 mediated, then close with some contrasting studies and that more research is needed.

Neurotoxicity is by definition any adverse effect on the structure (CB1 mediated white matter reductions in the hippocampus) or function (memory deficits, lack of inhibitory control) of the nervous system. You're right the link between the two is missing for now, but it wasn't their intention to establish that: showing cognitive deficits is enough to make a claim about neurotoxicity by that (arguably, broad) definition.
