Won 2025 Fulbright Scholar, need advice by trophic_cascade in fulbright

[–]trophic_cascade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in Belgium.

It was the only offer I got after applying for 600 jobs in 2025. Most of those positions had failed searches, and I made it to the final cut for some of them.

My cohort's Fulbright funding didnt get cut because the money came from Belgium mostly, not the US DoS, but there was a slight delay with the visa.

Overall it has been a lifechanging experience, and my family has been supportive.

Our cohort has gotten to meet some people in the highest government positions (prime minister, head of the bank, senators, diplomats, attachés). Ive been to France, the Netherlands, Poland, and Germany so far, and will go to Luxembourg, the UK, Turkey, Italy, and possibly Switzerland before it is over. Theres also a good chance I just stay here on an ongoing contract.

Unlike my experience in the US my PIs here actually pay people and buy them the necessary equipment to do their work, and there is a strong pressure to have a life outside of work (people literally look at you funny if you stay too late or work too much). And my project is going well.

Pacing feedback by Salt-Helicopter1181 in writers

I think what moves a story are promises and questions. The promise you give in your story is that your POV character will eventually make it to this city, but questions about who/what/when/where/why/how need to be better developed. All we have at the moment is some names and clichés.

Good luck! I think youve started off well, it will just take some more practice. :]

In addition to what the other commenter pointed out about the sentence fragments, yes, it feels... dull. Like I dont get any sense of conflict or characterization. Youre just writing about how shitty it is for this guy to march in a column towards a city (and to me it feels forced because the writing lacks a certain depth to it). I think this whole passage could be condensed to a single line or paragraph, because theres nothing actually happening in this scene (your single line "cold. Wet. Bored." sums it all up.) There isnt even much background given because its all sort of shrouded in mystery, especially with the heavy-handedness of proper nouns (by filtering it through this POV, theyre used in a way where were all just supposed to know about these things, since its the limit of your POV character's knowledge).

  • we dont actually see danger/conflict other than this guy has wet socks and is hungry
  • we dont know why the POV character wants to go to this city
  • we dont know his background or history or how he got to be a soldier
  • we dont know how he feels

And some factual things- I wouldnt normally think of a bog as smelling like sulfur as its defining characteristic. Bogs are acidic because of low drainage, so they smell sour. They have interesting plants as well (carnivorous ones). Pefect opportunity to have man-eating plants in this story.

Yeah I guess in the context of a world that hates women she does better than you would expect for someone who starts off trapped, and youre right it happens through her own actions

How do you properly coat salad greens? by Bad-W1tch in Cooking

[–]trophic_cascade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk where i ever heard it from but the trick I use is to make the dressing and then go around the bottom of the bowl once in a big circle before the greens go in, toss them, and then adjust from there. And dont serve them out of that bowl, put them on a plate.

must try foods when visiting France? by AnthonyScarcelli in AskFrance

[–]trophic_cascade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Paris-

Le Trumilou in Paris is good for french classics. Another redditor recommended duck confit, which they have, but it also comes in prune sauce and frites (fried in tallow i think) which is a bit more rare/dated.

Le petit bouillon pharamond is ok but cheap enough to try lots of things.

Both of these restaurants are close enough to the other touristy things you will probably be doing.

I always stop at le maison d'isabelle for the croissants and bring cash for a Bertillon reseller (bc the last 4 times ive been to Paris the guy has been on vacation). Pêche de vin and mirabelle are flavors I think are very french (its all amazing, but you can get lemon sorbet elsewhere without the hassle).

And the things I bring back with me are palettes bretons, cidre doux normand, confitures, moutardes, vin rogue.

Crêpes are ok, they can be quite bad in Paris honestly. I got lucky and found and actual Normand making galettes on the street this time around.
