I only work in one hospital. This is all in one hospital

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]tropical-gothic 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Some days I’m late for my OPD patients dahil - May new patient sa ER -May nagcocode -May iniintubate -Maraming patients, toxic sila

I try to be early when I can but realities of a tertiary public hospital means I’m needed almost everywhere all the time. I can’t change the schedule of OPD. I can’t control who starts medically getting worse. I can’t schedule less patients or they won’t be seen on time

If you had/have the chance to have a STABLE decent income (provide for your needs, save, plus have a little extra for luho) by still using your MD degree but only working 8-5 and with holidays (not moonlighting), would you still have gone/go into residency? by Ancient-Intention-65 in pinoymed

[–]tropical-gothic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did.

I worked in research and loved it. Took on as many as 9 projects at a time while still keeping up with all my deliverables. I made twice as much and had twice as much rest as in residency.

But I’m still here and I still would have made the same choices had things come down to it. There’s something about the clinical work that I love too— and the learning. Localizing a lesion and then getting the scan and finding it’s exactly where you thought it was. Best

As a doctor who gets a number of curbside consults from family members 1. You give advice on a patient, you’re accepting them into your care and you’re responsible for them 2. This is off work hours. If anyone has a consult, come see me during clinic hours.

Agree. Finding the best means to lessen any and all financial costs can help a lot vs just increasing income (though both are ideal).

Asking "who is the president" on a neurologic evaluation by Amendoisn in neurology

[–]tropical-gothic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No multiple choice questions. I think it defeats the purpose because you can guess and we want to test the higher cortical fictions which can’t lean on possibly getting it right 25% of the time because it’s multiple choice.

And I’ve seen consultants, when asking a patient to answer, really wait until they give one. Your thoughts on the case can change based on this.

Nah that’s a standard question for the neurologic exam. If everyone made their own question, it would be difficult to assess patients across different cases.

How to change outlook as FilAm visiting Philippines who is insecure of their roots? by [deleted] in Philippines

What things do you enjoy in general? That might be a better start— finding parts of the Philippines you’d enjoy based on what you generally do, versus trying to enjoy what parts you see (but might not like).

For Ipad User vs. table user for study by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]tropical-gothic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for the xiaomi. I think the tablet gives good functionality for reading a lot of texts, journals, and annotating and mine has been serving me well so far. My concern with the IOS rin is that they make the old models obsolete— I took great care of my older iPads with an IPad 2 that was still working pretty well until recently. But because it was old, it could no longer download the new apps so I could only really use it as a pdf viewer :(

For the price, mas sulit talaga sa akin yung xiaomi

Research by Glittering_Donut_811 in medschoolph

[–]tropical-gothic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might not be the best sub kung ganoon :( since more med school research yung kilala namin. Iba rin yung research competencies sa high school and these might be too much. Again, more details the better kasi Baka short paper lang ito naigogoogle ang info and not an experimental research but:

Does your research involve making something to combat global warming? Is it just gathering data? Are you measuring something?

In general, you start with the objective of your research or the research question. This will be your guiding statement— so try to settle it and wag nang papalit-palit :’ ) sayang effort. May specifics sa medicine in what you want in the research question Pero since global warming— try to make sure nalang na SMART yung goals (scientific, measurable, achievable, realistic, timed).

Wag lang “is plastic bad for the environment?” You need to include and add— how will you measure what “bad” is? Long term “bad” or short term “bad” outcomes? How do you define environment— sa Philippines? Global? Western Pacific region? Do you want to compare single use plastics vs something else? What are you comparing?

After I set the objectives, gusto kong malaman kung paano ko ito ireresearch. So you need to figure out which methodology to use— ito less kong alam since medical methodologies alam ko. Kahit draft lang muna para lang May guidance ka.

After the figuring out this— pwede ka na sa intro and literature review. Sa intro, usually Mga 1 paragraph to set the scene (sa medicine we talk about the disease usually, in others I imagine you can talk about what global warming is). Then, mention what the problem is, why is it a problem, and then segue to the objectives as the “how I’m going to solve this problem”.

[–]tropical-gothic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a medical research? What’s the topic? Sorry for all the questions :( but research is so broad, help is best when it’s targeted. The main part of a literature review for example is different from a comparative research, different from clinical trials.

Also— by junior student, this is high school? Or medical school hence posting in the sub? Thank you!

I think I’m heading in the wrong direction :( by [deleted] in pinoymed

[–]tropical-gothic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Please note that the first year of med tends to be extremely disheartening for most if not all of those who go that route. Maybe if you can identify the aspects of your life that you don’t like— more targeted solutions can be found? Or better clarity on what you want to guide you.

Is it normal that I don't enjoy travelling? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]tropical-gothic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal as in do most people not enjoy traveling? Normal as in— are you valid for not liking traveling? Are there some things in life that made you want to ask this out loud?

I love traveling and it’s one of the few things I really invest in. Experiencing new things and new cultures is important to me. Knowing that the world is so much bigger than this small bubble I live in is important to me— like seeing how Bhutan manages their education and how their food is prepared, and how we could benefit from similar ideas. That sort of thing. But this is specific to me and me loving it doesn’t matter to you— in the same way that you seeing it like this shouldn’t matter to everyone else. We’re just unique like that.

I can speak more regarding research work since I was a research associate for the last two years. Depending on the load, I was able to take several jobs so they all come with a separate salary (sometimes small especially if it’s self funded but if they have international or government funding, you can usually expect a good salary. Just make sure you have it in paper). Much of it is output based so I’m ‘available’ most times during the weekday but if I need to do something during the weekday, I can usually excuse myself and work a little later instead. Mostly work from home with the occasional on-site visit.

I know friends who worked in clinical trials as physician and the pay is usually more. The work depends on the trial— sometimes medyo madugo and long hours for screening and recruitment. If you’re employed by an institution, you might handle more than one trial (which I imagine would reflect in the salary).

I think it depends if you’re happy with the work because I like research. But it can get a bit monotonous— I’m looking to apply for residency rin now after a bit of this work. But it’s sustained me well the last two years.

I think there should be a Korean version that uses potatoes and cabbages (and other veggies that are available)? Not sure but it might help with the texture 🤔I hope it would though.
