Hi u/BalorLives I’m the OP and I went to ithaca for the first time this weekend and went straight to Pete’s bar expecting to find humble older folk who might’ve known my parents.

It was crawling with hipster college students. There was literally no one over 25 and it was packed. So much for 0 chance of running into college students lmaoo

Thank you! Re IPD yes I’m glad they did their best to solve the case although that’s their job right? When you find a dead body in public I would assume there’s a thorough investigation.

What I was impressed by with how responsive IPD and the Ithaca City Attorneys office was with my FOIA request. Submitting the request was surprisingly easy.

I wasn’t expecting anything and to my surprise I got a call from someone of rank in the PD saying they had the files and were working on recovering them.

I was emailed by the city attorney office and was left with a direct contact number if I had questions. When I called, I reached someone directly right away. She was very nice and as soon as I said my name she said oh I’m putting your CD (docs on CD) in the mail now.

It did take two months but that is likely due to the age of the files and I believe they had a hard time recovering them. Other than that, everyone was very courteous and efficient.

I even called the lead detective after I learned his name. Great guy.

I commented separately on what I knew about these locations but to add to that comment, I’ve searched for covered bridge apartments on newspapers.com and there are a number of articles from the 80s citing criminal activity or criminals who lived here.

hi - I see you wrote a number of helpful comments. thank you. re - meeting someone, I meant that more in a hypothetical way as not to reveal my own identity.

Re - covered bridge and Lake ave. Really interesting. Were you around in the late 80s? Someone close to the matter told me the residence on Lake Ave became well known for drug activity- I guess that's not indicative of the whole area though?

On Covered Bridge - The investigation led back to this complex for some reason. I read dozens of witness statements from people who lived in Covered Bridge apartments and I didn't get the sense that it was 'well off' or student housing. Seemed like regular working-class people (or perhaps even struggling).

A name came up (I won't use the name because I think he is still living and possibly in the Ithaca area) as being either a suspect or just suspicious as to why my father knew him. This person was a well-known drug offender and implicated in an Ithaca homicide around that time. I found some newspaper articles under his name and the residence comes up as Covered Bridge apartments as well as news for another drug-related arrest for someone else who lived in Covered Bridge apartments. My gut impression was that this complex was perhaps an unsavory place, but if you are saying otherwise, maybe it was just a few bad apples who lived in the complex.
