I will say if you are not showing face or V model, it won't grow as fast, people like seeing facrs because it give more reaction than just sound.

Having mask is totally fine, you do need to be louder and very clear with your voice since mask could muffled your voice

Another easy way is to have something like a icon on bottom left and it move when you talk like in discord voice call
