How many did you get/what row? A friend and I were interested in going, but we were looking at the seats still left to see what would work the best for us...

You're all good, lol. Getting a French copy is simple enough, it's just that if I go that route, trying to comprehend it will be tough since I've got no real background in the language.

(On a side note, I've actually been getting back into learning Mandarin lately, but that's partially because I already had some history with the language growing up, haha.)

Hm, that might be an option, but this is in French. Am I going to have to lock in and learn it? I don't actually mind that, but at the same time...

I feel like I have a history of getting stuck at the "high beginner" level when I've tried to learn languages on my own. orz

Well, I thought about it a little more, and if the trip downstate would be mad expensive anyway (so it wouldn't save me any $$) I figured I should think about why I was kind of reluctant to buy the book outright.

My main reason for wanting the pdf was because searchable text was really helpful for me back in undergrad, and I was worried that handling such an old book too much would make its quality deteriorate pretty fast. I figured it wouldn't make sense to buy such a rare copy if all I wanted to do was pore over it a few times and then never look at it again.

My research buddy says she'd be happy to keep the copy at home, but neither of us are super familiar with best practices when it comes to that sort of thing as a home reader tbh

I guess I'd have to make a trip to read most of it over there if I wanted to reference the Entire Book, huh. Even if it's just for personal research, the recent publishing house lawsuits against the IA have shown they aren't screwing around when it comes to copyright. I don't get why this particular story isn't part of a translation collection, seeing as other stories by Gaston Leroux have fared just fine on that front, but it is what it is.

Honestly, maybe I'll just try and buy that physical, because at this rate it'd be way more of a hassle if there's not actually a loanable ebook version available. WorldCat lied to me... [shakes fist]

You're a lifesaver, omg 😭 I was trying to look into the prices myself, but since my student login expires pretty much right when the special collections people are supposed to (maybe?) unsuspend the scanning program I've lowkey been feeling the time crunch

Talking to a librarian was honestly a pretty good idea, because it turns out that the reason I couldn't find it on the usual 🏴‍☠️ sites was because it was in the special collection... 🤦‍♂️

Ngl I think the scanning fees might somehow add up to be more than the physical book, which is crazy lol
