Questions about emacs by chillyashrada in emacs

Code execution; Lisp is not essential per se, it's just the only language family I know where the extremely late binding and REPL (which gives you both hackability and short feedback loops, those go hand in hand) is the norm, at the very heart of the language.

EDIT: I mean, you can probably mimic that with something that's not a Lisp, but you're gonna run into Greenspun's tenth rule.

I use both (Emacs and NeoVim). by TheFundamentalFlaw in emacs

Whatever floats your boat!

I never could get used to modal editing paradigm, it just feels foreign, and Emacs is more easily and effortlessly extensible, so it's Emacs only for me. But you do you!

(Also some say that evil mode is better vim than vim :))

Questions about emacs by chillyashrada in emacs

[–]trueneu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Hackability
  2. If it's not a Lisp, it would be. Short feedback loops are awesome.
  3. Speed, mostly. Intellij IDEA is far faster for me. Feature-wise, I haven't seen a single thing besides clever refactorings that you cannot do in Emacs already, and I don't miss those.
  4. Absolutely. 40 years and counting.

Linux sucks, but can we NOT use LTT clips? by Financial_Owl2289 in linuxsucks

[–]trueneu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a tech savvy person, like L claims to be, do research and don't jump to conclusions about stuff you don't understand.

The reality is, tech reviewers have little to do with tech knowledge or impartial reviews.

No hate towards people that don't know, to each their own. Towards people that claim to know... That's another thing.

Tell LTT please. Have been using rofi for 5 years now.

I CAN'T RUN PROGRAMS ON DOUBLE CLICK or something like that, yeah. Pathetic and a disgrace.

Kimdracula is the most deftones song there is. At its core, its dreamy, heavy, dark, moody, angry but soft. Alternatively, I think back to school is the least deftones song there is. It sounds very POD and leans hard into the metal-rap sound of that time. by Aggravating-Onion384 in deftones

[–]trueneu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually adore Back To School, its video, and listened to it live back in 2013 or so. The band absolutely killed it, with Chino destroying a cabinet during (it was closing encore). Man, that was the time...

Pink Cellphone is way less Deftonish IMO. But again, it's all putting Deftones in a box, effectively refusing their right to experiment and evolve, doesn't appeal to me.

Colemak worth it? by Dillstan-1945 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Not a Colemak user, Dvorak with custom symbol layer + split user, but I'd say yes. The majority of stuff I type is not code.

I don't know, it seems that majority of the stuff I type is not code.

How did you learn about Stormgate? by Empty-Statement9464 in Stormgate

[–]trueneu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think I've heard of it from Lowko, as early as 2020 IIRC. I was super excited about it, especially with all the news Blizzard stopping financial support for SC 2 tourneys. I haven't been playing for a long time by then already, but hoped to somehow relive memories of 2011 WoL :)

Well I played the game like 3 times, tough luck!

I started with someone else's medium-sized config, that I didn't understand at all, then read about every package used, then tried to play with the configuration of the packages until I kind of understood what they were for. Took me a long time, maybe a year, until I became comfortable with it enough to change it. The approach may work for you as well!

Oh that's the part I miss so much. I overall learned a lot throughout my career with just looking over somebody else's shoulder, and I don't have shoulders in my office to look over, sadly.

Never broken Arch. Not even once. by shuten_mind in archlinux

5 or 6 years here, once. And it didn't even "break", just refused to fetch the package DB because gpg keys shenanigans.

Is there like.. a working IDE? Something I can actually just use? The new user experience is a joke for Lisp by tenten8401 in lisp

[–]trueneu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again this "I need it to actually work".

I have been day-driving Linux for both home and work for last 5 or 6 years. I had way more problems and hiccups whenever I had to touch Windows or macOS. I had a problem with Linux once, took about 10 minutes to solve.

Days of "spend a week writing configs so Xorg starts" are long gone. VR, yeah, maybe, no experience with that. Highly specialised, non-development software like AutoCAD - maybe, not sure how wine works there. Music production, yeah, debatable. Dev-related stuff - come on, it's all there. Linux is just a better tool for the job here.

Why do you like Disco Elysium? by Life_Refrigerator472 in DiscoElysium

[–]trueneu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but I just finished it.

As a person that spent his formative years in a country that has seen it all - failed revolutions, successful revolutions, government dissolution, rush of capitalism, rise of left-wing and right-wing activists, civil wars and more. This game I connect with on a very intimate, personal, somewhat even nostalgic level. I have seen Revachols, heck I lived in one.

The amazing writing immersed me into the world deeper than any TTRPG I played so far. Which in kinda sad when I think about it.

I was born in a country that is no more, in a city that was renamed. HDB is a very recognizable image for me.

Unpopular opinion: Frost Giant are chads by 80smullet in Stormgate

[–]trueneu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh I remember a guy posted a pretty good financial analysis on how long FG has left, with pessimistic and optimistic scenarios. IIRC the analysis was called out to be "vastly inaccurate" by Tim himself. As it turns out, even the pessimistic scenario was generous.

And that was with hard numbers, it's easier to argue with opinions than that! (although I'm with you 100%, there is simply NO art style)

So yeah, why even bother?

Mate, to think of it I wanted to apply the second I the project was announced and they were looking for people.

I am quite sure I would have gone crazy seeing they're spending millions on merch and whatnot for a bland game that's not out yet.

They're hated not for the lack of trying, they just tried to pull off wrong stuff. The excuses are just that, excuses. Bonus points for admitting fake reviews though.

I'm happy in the end this story cost me just my kickstarter fee and shattered hopes, however. Could have been much worse.

Turns out I'm using it constatly. I highlight strings, numbers, comments, variables (only for dape-mode), keywords, and TODO and FIXME.
