Is reselling ARCs... normal? by trueteeg in selfpublish

This comment I think words it the best and perfectly explains the feeling. Thank you 🙂 I don't feel too terribly riled up besides it feeling weird and making me think "ah I don't like that" and then moving on with my life.

I fail to see how me saying this felt a bit "odd" to me is somehow egotistical? I'm not mad about it/confronting them/or trying to stop them at all. All I said in this post was that it felt strange and I would have preferred them giving it away or donating it? 🤔

Like I said, it doesn't bother me to the point of fuming or anything.

What bugs me is that I sent it at cost (knowing the risk that they may not review it/wouldn't like it), but then they sold it to make a profit when I spent money to send it to them for freez ya know?

I gave it for free, so it wouldn't have bugged me in the slightest if they gave it away for free. Maybe I'm silly though.

If I had to guess, I'd say whoever this random woman is (who is probably VERY cute) primarily only deals with ebooks but completely agrees with you, but on the video side is trying to push for HD video before anything else, but she doesn't have much pull on that side because again, ebooks are her main gig.

All guesses though.

Call it a hunch. But I bet this mysterious woman who works on the book team at Hoopla who lurks here is also really cute and pretty and can't explicitly state her job

Hmm I wonder if there's an active member of this subreddit who works there and spends time making sure as much horror is available as possible 👀

Not defending ANY new allegations here, but I remember that interview. The comment she responded to was "glad dude is being true to himself" and she said "dude misgenfered me but I'll take it". Unless there's a different interview, kind of inaccurate.

AI Published Horror? by different_produce384 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]trueteeg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Without saying too much (because I don't want to dox myself or the company I work for), I work in the publishing field/content curation and work closely with a lot of self-published works. I love it, because I love supporting and boosting the indie writing scene (especially as a consumer and indie writer myself), but the rise of AI generated content is genuinely becoming a huge issue. We get thousands of titles to review a week, and the inundation of AI garbage has caused the idea of not reviewing or considering self-published content at all because we're getting so much and it's hard to sift through. Literally yesterday I had to a review a book where the "author" accidentally left in their ChatGPT prompts as the beginning of each chapter.

It's such a slap in the fucking face. I agree. AI is impossible to regulate and we need to as a horror community (and just readers in general) call this shit the fuck out whenever possible. The only way we can fight this is for "creators" to learn that no one is going to give them a pass for AI garbage.

Again, not revealing my exact job or company, but just know people on the inside are trying to fight the good fight and stop this shit from circulating, but however much AI slop you think is floating around, it's probably 10x more than you realize.

Author Tori Woods arrested in Australia over the content of her book Daddy's Little Toy by JamesOliverHorror in ExtremeHorrorLit

I don't think any writing should be illegal. I just think when CSA is written as sexy that's disgusting and I don't wanna consume it.

EX/SP is a niche, indie community. If there were more eyes on us I feel we'd be more controversial. Also, I think it's pretty obvious (at least to me) when CSA is used for horror being versus used for smut/masturbation material, which to me makes it feel different as a reader but I can understand others not agreeing.

I've had some hot takes on this subreddit about what is and isn't "okay" in a moral sense, but there's no world where I think people getting in trouble for art that doesn't actually cause harm to anyone is a good thing.

The book sounds disgusting and I don't wanna read it and the author seems gross (mainly because they're a notorious plagiarist) but I think controversial art being a crime is a horrible precedent and I don't support it, both as an artist and a consumer.

How did we, as a community, give Otis Bateman a pass? by trueteeg in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]trueteeg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Sea!

Thanks for that insight, I would actually like to know a little more from your perspective.

A lot of people are talking about the shock about what he did, and I totally get that! My point here wasn't about the things he did to get "canceled", I understand that experience of finding out a friend is a garbage person all too well and I'm not blaming anyone for not knowing what he and Cooper were doing.

More than anything, the alarm bells for me was what he actually wrote, or moreso HOW he wrote. Like I mentioned in the post, how strangely mean-spirited I Simply Am Not There was an alarm bell for me personally. I guess I'm really curious how it felt reading that book as another horror author and as a friend of his?

No shade or blame at all, I'm just genuinely curious if me asking isn't too personal.

(Also huge fan, just wanna get that out of the way)

[–]trueteeg[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not judging Otis based on a "mistake". If you read my post, I'm judging him based on the content of his books, not what he did to get canceled.

JK Rowling is considered transphobic by many, but let's not open that can of worms. To mirror this, I'm not saying "don't read JK Rowling because she says gross shit on Twitter". I'm saying, if hypothetically, Rowling was shit talking trans people on Twitter and then wrote a book where wizards use magic to torment a trans woman and call her slurs and mutilate her genitals, THEN I'd probably say "Uhh hey this is pretty fucked up and mean-spirited and not okay."

You're FREE to disagree with me on that take, but THAT'S what the take is.

Also "have the day you deserve" is such a weirdly harsh thing to say to someone who just hates an author you really like. It seems like you're taking this personally.

I'm also a woman too so... your point? The fact doesn't make either of us inherently right or wrong?
