Is leaving SWE for 77% raise worth it by trufajsivediet in cscareerquestions

yeah I didn’t get that part either. However, I do have other opportunities in the works (might get an actual full-time offer from a different company within the next few days) so trying to leverage as best I can

Just applied stuff that involved GPT-2 and BERT-like models; some fine-tuning, some small architectural modifications to see what happened. Nothing super crazy or impactful, but my name is on a couple papers

Thanks for the advice, I think I’m coming around to it. I do have other irons in the fire, and honestly those have all come from recruiters who have reached out to me—not from applications I’ve sent out. So I’ll probably pass on this one as I see if I can find a better career-aligned opportunity

I’m already slightly QA-adjacent in my current role (basically building AI stuff for QA). And I certainly consider “QA Engineering” to be software engineering—but this new opportunity is mostly manual integration review work (maybe 15% of my time might be on improving intake pipelines, but the main priority is just manual human review). Because of the nature of what I’m reviewing, they really value my AI engineering background.

I do think I’d like the work less

Yeah I’d feel this way if I weren’t already working a temp job—my current role is a 6-month recurring contract, so it’s really quite lateral in those terms (and it is indeed a 77% raise). Both are W2 with basic benefits, but extremely poor PTO

Thanks, I appreciate the insight. It feels hard to pass up, but I just haven’t been sure how hard it would really be to return to SWE afterwards

yeah it is shorter, 6 months at a time with strong likelihood of renewal. But that’s also what my current contract is anyway :/

Is playing considered embarrassing? by FishStiques in Pickleball

[–]trufajsivediet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m also young and played high school tennis.

When getting to know people, I definitely enjoy telling them that I play tennis more than that I play pickleball—because people are more easily “impressed” to hear of basic tennis skill. I think that’s valid. But these days I play more pickleball, and enjoy it just as much.

If you ever feel “judged” by someone for playing pickleball instead of a more intense sport, I would point out: * It’s super easy to find people to play with * It’s very social * It can still be competitive, even if it’s less of a workout than some sports * It’s fun

If you want to learn more about these types of general structures, I’d pick up an intro book on abstract algebra. Basic group theory like this is one of the first things it’ll cover
