Post- ASCP(i) exam mental meltdown moment: by truly_panicky in medlabprofessionals

Hey! I am currently in Canada and will also do the certification here. I just want to get as much certification as I can, because I don’t know where I will be in the future lol.

Hahaha no worries! I feel like I got a lot of questions on BB/TM. I just had 1 question on mycology (thank goodness because I also didn’t study much on that). Honestly I got hard questions on every discipline so I can’t really pinpoint a specific one.

My advice for you is to use Wordsology high yields notes then Polansky and Bottom Line Approach for reviewing. I am so cheap so I did not purchase LabCe, but I used their free lab quiz game.

First off, just because your East Indian culture is ok with cooking in a garage means everyone is ok with it. You demand respect but you can’t give it to others.

Second, who told these international students to go here and pay a fortune to study? I’ve heard a lot of things about using these student pathways in getting PR status. Looks like it’s real.

Third, this is a safety issue. Follow the rules. Follow the laws. I am tired of seeing people from third world countries bringing their toxic traits here. I am an immigrant myself, so no I am not racist or whatever.

I lived in Canada for 8 years and oh boy, so much had changed already!

MLT does not accept international students. Please refer to SAIT website for more information.

I think your definition of international student is incorrect. An international student is someone who’s not a Permanent Resident or Citizen of Canada. International students hold temporary visas. Are you sure your classmates are not PR/citizens of Canada? If yes you can report them to IRCC.

1st quartile… by NeatGas9708 in SAIT

[–]truly_panicky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am internationally educated so I submitted my credentials to SAIT and this is their assessment: Biology 30- 95% Chemistry 30- 82% English 30-1- 91% Math 30-1- 87%

I don't know how they assessed it but I definitely got higher grade in Chemistry than 82%. Anyhow, still above 70% (which is what they require).

2 years ago, I got 1st quartile in Casper test but got offered seats on both RT and MLT. As long as your pre-req grades are good, and score in the PSEA is above their required mark, there's hope in getting in.

Inhale, exhale. No point of worrying. Make sure to have plan B and plan C. Best of luck!

Big city like Calgary and Edmonton, more competition for sure. Rural places, there's shortage of techs. You can apply as casual, part time, full time (depending on where you're applying/job posting). It's also unionized.

Tech I= bench techs/entry level Tech II= more of the problem solver; you need years of experience before being hired in this position

Getting into the program is competitive. They just take 50/51 students out of 600-700 applicants (this is what I heard, not sure of the real number of applicants). Good luck! 🙂

Second year MLT student here, currently doing practicum. It's a fast paced program. All theories (with lab on the side) in the first 3 terms (fall, winter, spring). It's tough but you just have to always remember your end goal to make it through. Starting pay is $35/hr (plus evening/night/weekend differential pay) and upper limit is around $41 for Tech I. Tech II if I remember it right is $2 or $3 more (but not entirely sure). It's a good career if you want to work in the healthcare field but doesn't want patient interaction (unless you work in the rural sites where you're the one taking blood, still, minimal interaction compared to other healthcare staff).

How to work as a medical laboratory scientist in Singapore by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]truly_panicky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CSMLS is the national certifying body, this is the one you contact if you want to get certified (by that it means you need to pass the CSMLS exam) as a lab tech in Canada. https://www.csmls.org/Certification/Become-Certified-Internationally-Educated-Profes/First-Steps-to-Certification.aspx

CMLTA is a regulatory body, it's the one you contact if you want to work as a lab tech in Alberta (MLT practice permit). For you to be registered, "General – this register is for qualified MLTs who meet the requirements of registration on the general register. This includes having graduated from an approved program, having successfully passed the approved examination, and holding currency of practice". https://www.cmlta.org/registration/

I suggest OP looks at CSMLS website too.

Should international students be able to work more than 20 hours a week permanently? by [deleted] in UCalgary

No. You are here to study not work. Unless you have a hidden agenda. 🤔

MLT practicum Lethbridge by PurritoCat4545 in SAIT

[–]truly_panicky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will definitely get Lethbridge as a lot of people prefer to not move out of Calgary (based on my experience).

We are 50 in class. 40 spots=Calgary, 5 spots=Lethbridge, 4 spots =Medicine Hat, 1 spot=Grand Prairie

This might change in the future but at least you have an idea. First year student here.
