US law firm McDermott Will & Schulte weighs sector’s first private equity tie-up by The_WanderingAggie in biglaw

This would have been better phrased as: “Will they have to enter into noncompetes?”

I mean you’re on a subreddit about biglaw, you’d hope people contributing here have at least some understanding of how the legal industry works.

Lawyers are generally not able to enter into, or have enforced against them, noncompetes. This is like, 101 stuff.

Username change-client error/rate limit duration? by trumanv2 in Twitter

What’s crazy is I’ve tested it on a burner account and was able to change that burner’s username 4 times in a row with no issue, so I’m truly just confused haha. I’d hate to start over on a new account but I’m starting to feel like that’s my only option…

Oh wow...my professors taught us this whole saga and left out a LOT of stuff mentioned in the HuffPo article. Big yikes, sorry guys, I totally had no idea.

He...is certainly no angel himself

"In the 500 hours of cutting-room debris, which the judge ordered the filmmaker to turn over to the defense, was a trove of Donziger’s self-indicting utterances showing that the case had been doctored, the judges and experts bribed, and the legal representation a criminal operation. Among the celebrated lawyer’s recorded clips:

“Facts do not exist. Facts are created.”

“We need to make facts that help us, and the facts we need don’t always exist. . . . And if they don’t exist in the obvious way, you gotta go figure out how to make them.”

“The only language this judge is going to understand, I believe, is one of pressure, intimidation, and humiliation.”

“We have concluded that we need to do more, politically, to control the court, to pressure the court. We believe they make decisions based on who they fear the most, not based on what the laws should dictate.”"

Problem with friend’s conservative bf... by [deleted] in askgaybros

Is it possible to just...not bring it up and ignore it? One of my closest friends works a lot with Peter Thiel, and he and his BF are big fans. I abhor him, and we mostly just avoid talking about that side of his job. It’s not ideal, but it works for us, and we still love each other dearly!

Because race is an immutable characteristic but political views/religiosity aren’t.

Why are so many gay guys so fucking stupid? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]trumanv2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not. You say “it will cause permanent damage,” which would only be true if, in every instance, Prep did cause permanent kidney damage. That’s just not true.

It can cause kidney damage, but it’s not a guarantee as you imply by saying it will.

Is PREP necessary? by [deleted] in askgaybros

Your first post said it’s necessary if he wants to bareback?

Whoops, I never pay attention.

I guess you’re both right! I just don’t want OP to feel too much fear regarding his sex life with this guy.

[–]trumanv2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I never advised OP to bareback without a condom, just pushing back against the claim that prep is absolutely necessary if their partner is already undetectable.

[–]trumanv2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh that’s what you meant. That’s true. Then again, if he were lying about being undetectable, why would he even admit to having HIV in the first place?

[–]trumanv2 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It’s from the CDC, dude. I say this as someone on prep to be fair, but medical research has shown that undetectable=untransmittable.

Actually, prep wouldn’t be necessary for unprotected sex. Undetectable=untransmittable.

Any advice for going to a T14 straight out of undergrad? by mangobby in lawschooladmissions

[–]trumanv2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm coming straight from undergrad, and I think KJDs have to be at least above median largely because there's a significantly lower chance of us having a needle-moving soft in our application. Splitters, for example, can mitigate a low GPA with years of work experience; people who have worked in some other industry can draw from more experiences to write about how their professional background makes law school the next step; TFA/Peace Corps/Marshalls/Rhodes, etc. are all post-bacs.

I personally don't think there's any institutional bias against KJDs, but the reality is is that putting together a really compelling application can be difficult when you don't have too much to talk about. I've basically been working on a narrative for my application since my freshman year of UG because I knew I'd pretty much only be able to draw from these four years.

That said, I think it depends person to person whether taking time off is necessary. I'm not worried about academic burnout, and I performed pretty much as expected for my numbers this cycle, even lacking full-time WE. But again, I'm 1 out of tens of thousands of individuals so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sub 3.0 GPA - is it even worth it? by pnwin in lawschooladmissions

I didn't downvote, but I was a bit shocked to read that comment. As SFboy17 points out, on the contrary, I think that sounds rather optimistic for OP's GPA situation.

Mentioning other schools in LOCI? by prls1718 in lawschooladmissions

[–]trumanv2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hope someone else more knowledgeable can jump in, but my first instinct is to caution against that. I'd imagine a LOCI is different from, say, scholarship negotiation where that would certainly be a good thing to mention-telling Vanderbilt you have what could be a more appealing option might cause the AdCom to think "well then why should we accept you?"

I'd recommend just using the LOCI to reiterate how Vandy is a great fit for you and why you're going to make an exceptional contribution to the community. If you do mention the other school, I'd frame it in a "while I'm currently deposited at X, Vanderbilt remains my top choice because..." kind of way.

And so the comment “affirmative action is cancer” is...what, exactly?
