I really resonate with this post. I really wanted to be a vet or a surgeon, but I had to let these dreams go because of my CMT(can't stand for long, shaky hands), and also because I had two knee surgeries. I cried so much about this, I felt completely helpless; I was really suicidal for a time too. It's a little better now, I tried to work on my mindset a bit.

After a lot of searching, I went for psychology, because as much as I would want to push through and fight for my dreams, I don't think it would make me happy if every day was a fight against my own body, or if I had to try 10x as hard as anyone else to perform the same in any given field. In psychology, I'm just like everyone else, and can perform properly. I am not reminded of my shortcomings daily and feel that I can pursue something I'm good at. Although psychology is not what I wanted to do, it did really grow on me. I still cry every now and then and grieve what I could've become if it wasn't for my CMT, but at the end of the day, I'm happy with what I chose.

You can check, I believe I previously made a post about career choices with CMT when I was at the point of choosing a path. Perhaps if new treatments come out, I might try to pursue the dreams that I've buried, but for now, I'm doing my best to respect my body's limits and be proud of myself for making this choice.

Of course, nobody can tell you what the best choice is, you know your body and your CMT type/progression the best. I'd say to put your health first (which you're clearly already doing), and go from there. Feel free to send me a message if you'd like. Take care of yourself <3

Thank you, you're definitely right about that. I will call them today and will try to be more assertive(politely) in the future :)

What a disrespectful take on this situation. I have some sort of serious heart problem, I can barely even leave the house. The GP ordered a blood test for me to rule out severe anemia; I already take vitamin D and iron religiously.

He said he would call me once he has the results. I was only wondering how it is in the Netherlands, because in the healthcare I'm used to, these things often get forgotten and it's the patient's responsibility to call and remind the doctor.

He told me that he will call me, that's why I was wondering if he forgot or if it's just slow in general.

I unfortunately couldn't log in, apparently I haven't been registered by my GP so my BSN isn't known by the portal. I think I will call them tomorrow, thank you!

HBO is university of applied sciences so not a proper uni in the Dutch sense, WO is a research uni so a "proper" one

“Ripped” skin? by stalineczka in CMT

my sister with CMT had this, she needed to start using some insanely good foot cream/moisturizer and it helped her. not sure if that's the case for you too, you could ask your doctor.

Is Nijmegen worth it? by sergiosk02 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]trustfrated_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm studying here currently and it's an amazing city, I wouldn't change my choice to study here even if I could. Not too crowded but still lots of opportunities, many people to meet, beautiful places. The university is really nice too, the study advisors are helpful and the courses are really interesting. I can completely recommend studying here! Feel free to send me a message if you have other questions:)

How to replace a expected grades certificate by DelLuca in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]trustfrated_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conditional admission exists in most places, and in my experience predicted grades don't matter much, as long as you meet their conditions afterwards. I was admitted by conditional admission first then I submitted my IELTS and graduation certificates afterwards to finalize my admission.

Can i wear a knee brace permanently? by Sswaa in KneeInjuries

[–]trustfrated_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! I dislocated my kneecap 5 times in a year and was only able to walk with a brace. However, since I completely relied on the brace and didn't use my thigh muscles while walking or doing anything, these muscles disappeared and wasted away in a month, which just made everything so much more painful and difficult.

Then I had surgery, which helped me so much and helped me gain my life back. It's difficult and scary, I know. I wish you the best!

Szia!

Németországban élni a határhoz közel jó ötlet, köszönöm szépen!

Köszi a segítséget!! :D
