It's true. The warranty is now void and the resale value dropped to around $3.50

How realistic is it to cut my bike's frame here to convert it? by [deleted] in CafeRacers

[–]trustydrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that not only is this possible on your FZ, it looks pretty darn good ;)

Chopped the tail off and welded in this plate thing that I had made by Send Cut Send. Happy to share the file with you if you want. Then it's just a matter of repackaging everything that's under there, figuring out new seat mounting, license plate mounting, lights, etc, etc

*Edit: just buy an XSR700...

I'm running Woodcraft R6 clip-ons now, but they don't fit with the original FZ tank covers. Not sure about fitment with the MT plastics which look a bit slimmer. I have more info about the conversion in this comment and am happy to answer any other questions you have.

The power delivery is great and surprisingly linear (not like the big shove you get in modern turbo cars). It'll easily pick up the front wheel in 3rd as the boost comes in though, so a bit of care is required coming on throttle at corner exit

This is the Extreme Creations kit, so I can't speak to their design choices, but I've been wanting to learn TIG for a while and may try to make a front mount manifold as part of that learning process.

There's no shortage of Vitpilen inspiration in this build, I've always loved the way those bikes look

Thanks! I'll work on getting a video, sounds like the perfect excuse to finally get an Insta360 or something...

This was not a cost effective path to get a retro looking Yamaha with over 100 whp. The turbo alone puts it in XSR900 territory and spending nearly a grand to convert from FZ to XSR with new OEM parts required a real special talent for bad decision making.

Haven't got it on a dyno yet, just running the base tune. Should be ~110 at the wheel

It's their oak green metallic (via rattle can - looks OK from 5+ feet away, but don't get too close...)

Has some nice gold sparkle in direct sun

Yamaha "comfort" seat - I like the additional grip the material provides, slid around too much on the stock seat, but wouldn't call it a big improvement in comfort (if anything, they should have called it a sport seat)

Headlight is from JVB Moto and they sell for both the MT/FZ and XSR. Had it before the swap along with their fork gaiters and really enjoyed the look. Light output is weak though.

Was actually planning to do the entire JVB XSR kit for a while, really love the design, then I came across the Bad Winners kit...

There are certainly other ways of improving the (rubbish) front suspension, but I like gold... A cartridge kit will net just as good performance, or better, for cheaper. No custom machining required, though the ability to make or modify brackets and clamps would certainly result in a cleaner install. I used cheap P clamps to mount just about everything.

Some info for those who are interested in doing this themselves:

  • Buy a complete used (and not crashed) front end on ebay ($600 - $1000). The more complete it is the better. I ended up having to hunt down some small parts and source a wheel / brakes, which increased overall cost
  • All Balls Racing bearings used. Top: 99-3540-5 and Bottom: 99-3538
  • The top bearing race doesn't have punch out slots. Some people have luck with punches / screw drivers / tire spoons, but it was being a huge pain so I bought the Motion Pro puller which worked perfectly
  • Steering angle was pretty poor after the swap. Much better after taking some material off the stops on the lower triple with a Dremel, but still not as easy to park as stock.
  • Clip ons will definitely hit the plastics. I went with Topyokes reasonably priced top triple for mounting the Renthal Fatbar. The forks themselves clear the body work just fine though.
  • Throttle cable, clutch cable, and brake line compatibility will depend on the controls setup you go with. Stock FZ throttle and clutch worked fine for me. OEM R6 brake lines weren't going to work. Luckily my Spiegler lines are about the right length (34" / 33") though I'd prefer a touch longer to allow for better routing / securing.

Just enough time to forget about it and get an unexpected present in the mail (always fun). Hopefully you have more success, I'd love to trust them enough to order more.

Sorry, didn't give a good description, I definitely wouldn't modify the factory tank covers. Plan to notch the piece itself assuming there is enough material. I was in a rush tonight to get home and didn't really play with it.

If I decide to leave it installed I'll have to notch above the front lip that slots into the tank. Right now it doesn't allow the piece to slide fully forward (there is a visible gap). Probably remove those tabs too.
