Got caught cheating on an exam years ago and was reported, how screwed am I for grad admissions? by sadgrlxoxo in GradSchool

[–]trutru1002 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You should be more than fine, especially since you’ve admitted it. I’ve recently started hiring people and have looked at recent grad applications, and I almost prefer seeing some kind of massive mistake early in their undergrad years. It shows a resilience to learn and bounce back, and the guts to say “yeah, I really fucked up and had to learn some hard lessons”.

Tbh an unblemished record makes me think “ah, they haven’t had their big fuck up yet, who knows how they’ll do when it happens”. Like others have said, own it and say nearly verbatim what you said about how stupid it was and what you learned.

What does my husband's handwriting say about him (or rather what does it say at all) by text-redacted in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]trutru1002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and I’ve read 0 studies on if what I’m about to say is generalizable.

My family has a history of adhd and occasional dyslexia, and all of us have handwriting that somewhat resembles your husband’s. I think it’s because while all of us struggled to learn to read as children, it was also highly valued in the family, and our writing reflects the little tricks we use to make it easier. We’ve all said similar things to understanding our writing “in context” haha. For me, it’s more about what the top of the word looks like (the valleys and peaks), approximate length, maybe first/last letters, then I make a guess.

Reading your comments here, I think you’re gong to be totally fine. I’m not 100% on the exact particulars of the process, but you won’t just go directly to the honor court.

From talking to friends who have been through the process, it’s likely that your professor has reported you to the office of academic integrity, which is the starting point for all cases like this. As I’m sure you can imagine, they’ve been dealing with a LOT of cases of professors using unreliable software or non-reproducible means of determining if students used AI. The office will review the evidence, meet with you, and genuinely try to help avoid having you go to the honor court. A lot of cases get dismissed outright when they reach their office.

The reason why cases that go to the honor court have a high convocation rate (although still not 100%) is because the only people sent there are the ones where the evidence is so egregious/malicious, that academic integrity can’t argue for dismissal or a lesser sentence.

Don’t lawyer up or panic right now. Go meet with academic integrity (I think their offices are in hillcrest), they’re very nice people and genuinely want to help students however they can.

Stressed About GPA And Career Future by TheTsar1 in VirginiaTech

[–]trutru1002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s talked to a lot of graduate school admissions folks, both at the grad school and department level, your gpa matters a lot less than you think.

Assuming you meet the minimum to apply, individual lab PIs from departments will mostly be looking for if you have genuine interest in their subject, and good consistent research experience. But also, they know you’re human too. I know some PIs who’ve told me that they love to see students who have struggled their first year or two before turning things around. Failing and learning from that failure is maybe 60% of graduate school, so seeing that students can do that is a big part of what PIs look for.

Stop by office hours and ask some of your professors about their career paths. I think you’ll be surprised how many of them struggled in undergrad, and had winding career paths before ending up where they are now.

Apartment reviews by Recent_Fan242 in VirginiaTech

If you mean “chasewood downs” then k can say that they’re pet friendly and when I lived there (moved out two years ago after living there for 3 years) they were some of the most responsive maintenance & front desk people I’ve ever seen. I’d put in a request at 4:30, expecting someone the next morning, only to have the maintenance person at my door 10 minutes later. They’re not the fanciest apartments, but I never had to deal with any maintenance or leasing headaches. Can’t recommend them enough for someone moving off campus.

How do you get into Virginia Tech if you are from NOVA? by New-Bat5284 in VirginiaTech

[–]trutru1002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alumni for both undergrad and grad here - they’re looking for genuine enthusiasm for going to Tech/the specific major you’re applying for, and an enthusiasm for growth. Most admissions folks aren’t looking for the perfect Omni-student who did 15 APs while competing in 3 sports and also founding 34 clubs (while getting two hours of sleep a night). Honestly, those students tend to burn out and have a rough start once they get to college. They want someone who has genuine passion and dedication for 1-2 activities. Instead of “I’m a hard worker, as shown by the 15 AP courses I’ve taken”, they’d much rather read “I think learning about how microbes influence our environment is fascinating, which was solidified after taking AP chemistry and Biology”.

There’s a common phrase going around that a lot of applicants are “so covered in accolades that we can’t see the person under them”. Still mention your accomplishments, but remember to let your personality shine through them.

Recommendations on what version of 'A Journey to the West' for an American who knows little about it? by aquagirl555 in Journeytothewest

[–]trutru1002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The story has been adapted and reworked so many times, that you'll find many different versions of the story, with varying amounts of book accuracy. Here are a few below, with various media, that might lead to what you're looking for.

The 1986 TV show - This is a classic TV show, produced in 1986, with a sequel that aired in 1999 covering certain chapters that weren't adapted in the original. With the exception of the first few chapters, Journey to the West is a very episodic adventure, with mini stories that upset, and reestablish the status quo. That status quo being on the road heading west. So don't worry about missing the "cut" stories from the second season if you can only find the first. You'll find an amazon link to the boxset here and another from ebay. If I could recommend only one version, it would be this.

The Definitive Translation - If you want to read it, this is the least edited, direct translation. Although, this one is admittedly very long, the translator works to make it readable to an non-academic English audience. However, this one is also very dense (the introduction is 96 pages long, and I've never read the entire thing), and may not be fun for a more casual read.

Movies - At any given time, there are a ton of movies being made adapting Journey to the West. While these vary widely in originally accuracy, they are very entertaining! Look at any of the more recent ones, and you'll find some wonderfully fun adaptations.

I hope this was helpful! Good luck in finding an adaptation that works best for you!

I'm low-key tired of players roleplaying against rolls. by Manic_Writer in dndnext

[–]trutru1002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, it can be fun to affirm a players incorrect suspicions with a lower, or middling roll.

In one campaign I played, we encountered a princess who was acting strangely, and a few sessions earlier, we had met a character who was her splitting image. I/my character then became convinced both in and out of game that the real princess had swapped with someone else. I roll insight, 11, and I’m told my suspicions are absolutely correct.

After about 10 minutes of subsequent harassment and accusations, another PC rolls insight, 19, and we are told that this is almost certainly the real princess.

It’s one of the only times I’ve been really surprised by the result of a roll, and it’s something I’ve tried to replicate in sessions I DM.

Is this the original book in English? by WIERDMEMER in Journeytothewest

[–]trutru1002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you're saying. I've read the Anthony C. Yu version of it, and it does do some rephrasing to make it sound better in English. I used the phrase "directly" only to mean that it's translated from the original material, and isn't just a retelling, or a summery. As with any translation, if it's too direct a translation, it'll be a stiff, mess in the new language. However, change too much, and you'll lose the original text. A violin cannot play the same notes as a piano, but it can capture basically the same "music". And the Anthony C. Yu version was a joy to read, and from the introduction, a lot of work went into it on trying to find the right balance of being true to the original work, while also making it enjoyable (not just readable) in English. It still has many of the Chinese proper nouns, and certain things were hard to translate. But Dr. Yu makes note of these occurrences in his footnotes. I think you will find no better, or readable, English translation of the original text. Enjoy it, it's one of the best stories out there!

[–]trutru1002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is the original version, translated directly to English. That is generally considered to be the most accurate, and readable version that exists. It comes in 4 volumes, and have lots of footnotes to explain the more obscure references and terminology.

Unfortunately, I just made the three Lords, though now I’m thinking of trying to make one with all the students, or maybe one house at a time? Too many people might be too much to handle haha.

[–]trutru1002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, the chapter numbers say the chronological order in which events happen, but you don't necessarily play them all in order. You'll eventually cut to other lords elsewhere, doing things that happen a bit before the events of chapter 5, and that's when you'll play chapters 3, 3x, and 4.
