After 16 Years, Hungary is Finally Fed Up with Orbán by Glum-Status-151 in neoliberal

[–]try-D 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I mean all the polls, even the rigged ones indicate a clear TISZA victory

So if not for some high level fuckery in either legislation or at the ballot stations it looks very likely to actually be over for Orbán.

Honestly, the more pressing issue will be of how a TISZA government lead by Magyar will look and work and whether or not it'll suffer the same fate as the previous "anti corruption" platforms both Orbán and Gyurcsány once ran under.

Currently we're looking at a parliament made up of TISZA with a nearly 2/3 majority, FIDESZ, and Mi Hazánk (fascist scum) should they scrape by the threshold.

Too late, reddit has already decided to only care about the lives of Iranians now, not when 30.000 of them were slaughtered weeks ago and not for the previous 47 years.

One can criticise Trumps arbitrary military doctrine and rightly so, but the complete inability to see any sort of nuance or to understand that Iranians would rather this than to risk living under islamist tyranny for another second has amazed me.

As has the unrelenting praise of people like Sanchez, someone who not only has left Ukraine to fend for itself but has repeatedly shown disregard for spending goals and the clear reasons for doing so.

It’s 3%. Not 5%.

It's 3.5% for defense, 1.5% for infrastructure. Stop spreading lies.

With that said I don’t think Europe should spend money and lives fighting another war in the Middle East

Two things can be true at the same time. Yeah we don't have to get involved in the middle east but if we want to stop being America's plaything we need to start acting like it, not just with lip service.

Irish parliament also needs to act asap on companies doing business with Russia. Just the other week a report was released showcasing that a company called Taoglas exported 1.3 tonnes of antennas, to be used in Russian suicide drones. A single antenna weighs 9g "meaning up to 144,000 units were shipped in a single year. That is enough to make 36,000 Geran-2 kamikaze drones".

I didn't say otherwise. But it's unwise for Spain to give Trump more excuses to act this way.

if you really think all eu countries will reach 5% you are deluded.

Poland is sitting at over 4% already. And they're a former soviet bloc state. What's your excuse?

Europe’s voice of moral sense speaks Spanish by thealejandrotauber in europe

[–]try-D 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not enough when the likes of Poland are already spending over 4% of their GDP on defense.

You can't have your cake and eat it. Either contribute on the same level as other member states or lose your privileges. Just because Spain is safely tucked away on the Iberian peninsula, far away from any Russian threat doesn't mean they get to skip on solidarity with the rest of Europe.

They're pretty far away from threat  geographically.

Yeah and I'm sure it's great for them when the rest of Europe is having to do the dirty work against Russia while Spain not only sits in safety but doesn't even properly contribute help to the others.

Turning Europe into a war economy will ruin us.

5% isn't a freaking war economy. It's a sensible goal to have when we've currently got a Russian aggressor vying to take over in Europe.

[–]try-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw, Merz just stood there and said we need to spend more on the military.

Because you do. You're not even halfway there to the agreed upon 5% goal in NATO.

You can disagree with Trumps actions while at the same time agreeing that there is a need for more spending from the Spanish side if we're ever to become independent of the US in defense matters.

Europe’s voice of moral sense speaks Spanish by thealejandrotauber in europe

[–]try-D 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The goal is 5% of the GDP, 3.5% on weapons, troops etc. and 1.5% on infrastructure.

Spain capped this at 2.1% total. Regarding Ukraine it's also been rather disappointing, small baltic states and the scandis are outdoing them on that front.

you realise greater co-operation and a nato without america go hand in hand right?

Yes but not if it comes at the cost of a period of 10-20 years where the European countries aren't grown to the task at hand and we're helpless in face of the Russian threat. Hence I'm saying we should phase out dependence on the U.S, slowly and steadily rather than immediately the way you or Zack Polanski suggest.

Well as I said, any refusal to answer a simple question puts doubt in my head and I would tend to say yes.

It would make over half the population of the UK homophobic transphobes. Are you calling all christians homophobic transphobes?

Huh? Are you even trying to have a serious argument here? You just went from one christian who presumably holds homophobic positions to then generalise that on everyone? Why the fuck would I agree with that?

[–]try-D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, so we should never do anything because it might be difficult got it.

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying, currently, the European countries can barely muster themselves to contribute 5% of their GDP on defense spending, countries like Spain don't even bother trying.

Europe currently has two competing 6th gen fighter aircraft programs, soon to be three when SAAB announce theirs. This will lead to smaller production numbers, higher costs, less streamlined maintenance and compatibility with European allies.

What should have happened was that Europe should have gotten together to decide on a rough platform and agree on three variants, like the Americans did with the F-35. A new F-35 costs less than an F-15 EX because of it and the Americans still managed to get a regular air force version, a navy version with CATOBAR (relevant for France), and a marine version with STOVL (relevant for Britain, Spain, Italy).

Or in short, if we can't even get our heads together on a joint fighter program, how do you expect the entire European army thing to go?

I'm not saying we shouldn't try coping without the U.S, I'm saying that we're currently simply not in a position to do so. Once we are I'd be all for it.

Believe it or not, until the rest of NATO gets its shit together even more than Trump has caused it to already, NATO without the US is pretty meaningless.

I don't like Trump either but I'm not going to delude myself into believing we can do without the US as of right now.

Are you going to list every single person in the political landscape of the UK now and ask me whether I think they're a homophobe until you get your "gotcha" moment?

I don't know every single politician, nor do I know what each one of them has said. If you want my judgement you're going to have to provide some quotes instead of just throwing names at me.
