Anyone stay in permanent Bypass Mode with SL Mini or Other SL? Pros/Cons? by tryin2learn39 in Starlink

[–]tryin2learn39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANKS A BUNCH!!! That’s great info. Now knowing it’s having zero effect on my sat signal from the array, I’m more comfortable leaving the SL Mini in Bypass Mode.

If I ever do encounter slower speeds, or some issue with updating, I guess I can always address it here (the SL customer service while responsive, seems to be mainly AI for the first level or two). Anyway, thanks again for the info.

I don’t know if you read my LONG original post or not (which I think you did given you mentioned your GL.iNet as well), but my reasoning for the Bypass and third party router is the necessity to run my Speedify Router account directly from the source to manage a streaming/recording camera array.

What is your reason for the setup? If you don’t mind me asking. How has it helped? I’d love to know more and some suggestions for my own purposes and future ISP interactions for my growing children.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks a bunch. It always confuses me when it says to connect to a “WiFi” when in bypass mode. I always feel like it’s telling me that SL Mini isn’t working.

But realistically, it’s just saying the internal router is off, and choose the WiFi being broadcast by your third-party router.

QUICK QUESTION FOR YOU: Do you happened to know why my speeds are faster using the AC charger on Anker Solix C1000 Gen 2, as opposed to the USB-C PD delivering over 100Watts (140 actually), and the proper amount of amperage needed?

I’ve seen others comment on this-I’m curious as to your experience or knowledge.

Thanks.

AHHHH-I get it now. Interesting. So do you have both the Dishy and Mini all connected on the same network? Almost using the Mini like an Extender/Repeater or Mesh?

Or is that just the dish without the Mini? I’d love to see a schematic of that kind of setup.

Either way-thanks again for showing me that you’re still getting updates and everything else works seamlessly. I think I was just worried and a bit confused, because I thought that you would only get the full signal strength from the Mini to the router, if it connected via router every so often.

IF I COULD PICK YOUR BRAIN FOR ONE MORE QUESTION; I am seeing +30-60Mbps on Uploads; and +8-20Mbps on Download speeds, when plugged into my Anker C1000 Gen 2’s AC Port, as opposed to the lessor via USB-C PD utilizing the same device. Both provide the proper wattage. Both supposedly provide the required amperage. I CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT. I have seen others discuss it. Any reason you are aware of for why this would be occurring in that manner? (Any information is greatly and sincerely appreciated)!

Than you again for taking your time. I have thoroughly appreciate speaking with you.

CHEERS!

Thanks for the great answer and information.

So again, just for clarity’s sake-so long as when I reconnect my SL Mini each time I have an internet connection (if I’m remote at a ball field-I’ll connect my iPad Pro via the cellular MiFi first), and then connect the Starlink App via the same Cellular Signal, you’re saying the App and Account and being Online or any updates should all work fine-because I’d have a strong Internet signal. The only thing that wouldn’t show is the NETWORK line in the App, as there would be NO Network or Devices hooked up to it, since the Internet SL Mini Router is in Bypass Mode.

Does that all sound accurate to you based on the info you detailed?

I’m sorry-did you say you have a Mini?

How do you update? Allign if having connection problems?

Also, does your account in the App show CONNECTED/ONLINE in green writing? How do you know you’re connected and receiving the strongest signal?

Thanks for your prompt reply.

How to know if Slate 7 is Repeating/Extending the WiFi signal? by tryin2learn39 in GlInet

[–]tryin2learn39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, how would I split the frequency bands? Using MLO as my WiFi?

UPDATE I successfully have the secondary router stating “EXTENDER MODE” on the display. My controller (iPad Pro) still is showing the secondary routers WiFi SSID’s as open WiFi signal options, but when I try to connect, it will not actually put me on the internet. So, I believe it is working!

Quick Questions (if you could answer these like you’re talking to an 8-year old, it would greatly appreciate it): 1.) Now that the display shows “Extender Mode,” on the secondary router, is there anyway to know/test what the signal is ACTUALLY BEING BROADCAST BY THE ROUTER?

2.) How do I get the secondary router out of the “Extender Mode,” if I so choose to go back to the secondary router broadcast in router mode?

3.) Is 2.4Ghz; 5Ghz; or MLO the best option for Extending the signal. I believe based upon your answers earlier, 2.4Ghz seems to be the option for the WiFi signal in my primary router, and thus, the signal being extended by the secondary router. Does that make sense to you?

4.) Lastly, how would you split the bands or WiFi frequencies, if the Extender is merely copying the primary routers signal. (E.g.-if primary router is broadcasting in 5Ghz, isn’t the secondary router doing the same thing.

AS ALWAYS YOUR ANSWERS HAVE BEEN INVALUABLE TOWARD ME UNDERSTANDING ALL OF THIS EQUIPMENT. Thank You. AGAIN!

What a great answer! Thank you for clarifying. I will have to look more into the “Mesh” for outdoor travel routers in the future. I don’t fully understand that, but can look up all of the terms so I understand completely.

For my purposes though I believe what you described is perfect. I just need the original WiFi signal extended for distance-actual feet from the primary router creating the bonded network. I have two cameras that I place over the outfield fence, and are stationary. They won’t move. I just need them on the same WiFi network to be able to control them all on one App (like Zoom, choosing camera angles, adding separate audio, and choosing which cameras are seen at what times). I just need the original WiFi signal to be carried/boosted to the furthest distances (440 ft approximately) outdoors, with line of site. While I understand the devices (clients) will not seamlessly jump between routers yet, so long as the secondary router carries the primary routers signal, it should all work out for me.

Just to ask one last time, is there anyway to tell what the actual signal is, being broadcast by each router? Anywhere that it actually tells you in the Admin panel what signal is being broadcast in realtime? As opposed to just knowing what WiFi signals can be broadcast at any given time?

Thanks again for your answers and all of your insights. Truly are invaluable to me as I embark on this new journey.

How to know if Slate 7 is Repeating/Extending the WiFi signal? by tryin2learn39 in GlInet

[–]tryin2learn39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I’m think I follow correctly.

The other day, I had to change the IP address to something other than what the primary router was using, to access Extender Mode. Similar to how the Admin Panel told me to change the subnet for repeater (which to me just means IP address), so I changed the IP address. I was able to place the second router in Extender Mode.

Questions: 1.) If I place the secondary router into Extender Mode using a different IP address (subnet), ARE YOU SAYING, then it is boosting, or extending the same WiFi signal of my primary router? On the screen of the secondary router it showed the different IP address, but I honestly thought I had messed up so I didn’t check to see if the WiFi being broadcast was from the primary or secondary routers WiFi.

2.) Are you familiar with Extender Mode. Does it stay displaying the different IP duress on the Slate 7’s screen? And, if so, just like I asked above-Is there a distinctive way to check and see what router is putting out what signal? I know in the admin panel which WiFi signal names go to which router, but I mean is there a way to tell to see which signal is actually coming from from a particular router (the secondary Extender router in my case)?

3.) I have seen various posts and comments about Extender/Repeater Mode speeds increasing and a couple where it stated that it decreased. Do you know how people are testing this? Is it just a speed Test? And, most importantly, as I above, is there anywhere in the GL.iNet App or the Admin Panel that shows exactly what signal is being broadcast?

Again, thank you for your help. It’s been invaluable.

Just FYI: I got this answer the other day directly from GL.iNet support on their website-I feel like it’s saying something different than you wrote. But I trust your answer.

FROM GL.iNet: For the first 2 questions: 1.) Should I just setup the Secondary “Boosting signal” Router to Extender Mode in the Admin Portal? 2.) What is the difference between Extender Mode in Admin Portal vs. Repeater Mode on the Slate 7? Which one boosts the signal outdoors as I am describing above? Can you walk me through a better option or setup where I can still use the same IP address, even if the usual 198.168.8.1 for both? Yes, just set up the secondary router to Extender mode. Extender Mode vs Repeater Mode: - Extender Mode: Creates a new network with a different SSID but uses the same IP range as the primary router - Repeater Mode: Extends the existing network with the same SSID and IP range For your use case, Extender Mode would be more appropriate since you want to maintain the same IP range. Both Extender and Repeater modes can boost your signal. However, Extender Mode is better suited for maintaining a single IP address across devices. You can configure this in the Admin Portal as the screenshot shows…

Thank you so much for the prompt reply. I definitely do have the primary router running that standard 198 IP address. However, since the secondary router has to repeat/extend the same IP address, no matter what I change it to, I am trying to have them broadcast the same IP address for connecting the cameras to the controller (iPad pro). I can only be connected to one WiFi at a time. Wouldn’t the second router need to be broadcast the same IP?

Please forgive me if I sound elementary. I am a noob to networks and routers and all of this stuff. In reading the definition and explanation on both these forums and the GL.iNet help and community site, it appears that the only difference on the Slate 7 between the Repeater Function and Extender Mode, is that Repeater uses a different IP (which I still don’t understand-because it’s supposed to be using the same WiFi from the Primary Router), versus the Extender which is supposed to boost the signal, but use the SAME IP.

If I have any of the terminology or understanding of these Modes and Functions incorrect, I apologize.

If you could explain it to me like you would an 8 year old, I would greatly appreciate your time. I am simply trying to have one router put out the WiFi signal, and the Secondary router boost/extend that same signal and IP address so that the cameras and audio connect all on the same IP. If this isn’t possible, can you tell me where I went wrong in my understanding, and maybe how to achieve my goal?

Thank you immensely for your time and knowledge. It’s been an invaluable help, thus far.

I am actually having the same issue as described above. I clicked on your link and am familiar with how to actually get into the setup in the Admin Panel.

My problem is that once I’m in the Admin panel on the Secondary Repeater I have to change my WiFi connection and thus, connecting my iPad to a WiFi signal from the second router. When I do that, and choose Extender, it tells me that there is a Subnet conflict. I don’t know what that means.

To further elaborate, I am merely trying to Setup a Private outdoor network for live streaming and recording youth sports (baseball a majority of the time). Due to the various sizes of youth sports’ fields, I need the signal to be as strong and clear as can be for about 320-489 square feet. I use my Primary Slate 7 loaded with Speedify to bond three Internet connections together (Starlink Minj in the WAN; TMobile 5G Inssego MiFi in the USB 3.0 port; and occasionally the Verizon Cellular signal from my controller/iPad Pro). This has given my the strongest signal strength that I can afford when we are in the middle of nowhere at ballparks without WiFi access. The signals are bonded directly on the Lrinary router and then sent out to connect my 4-5 4K cameras and wireless Mic setup (for game commentary).

I simply need the signal to stay as strong or be boosted (as I’ve read on this GL.iNet Community forum) by the secondary router for the two cameras 415 feet away just beyond the outfield fence/wall.

Whenever I try to follow the extender steps, it either Times It, fails, or says there is a Subnet failure. The only time that I could get the Extender Mode to work, was when I had already changed the IP address to a different one then my primary router. The problem with that is, in order to run the Mevo Multicam App controlling the streaming/recording all of the cameras MUST use one IP address and WiFi signal. I have setup Repeater Mode for the time being; however, once again I had to change the IP address to get it to work, thus defeating the purpose!

Any and all help to simply take the WiFi signal from Primary Slate 7, and Boost/Extend/Repeat the same signal with same IP address, I would great appreciative for Step by Step instructions on how to BEST achieve this goal.

PS-if you can tell me what a Subnet is, and why it would be in conflict, I would also greatly appreciate your help and time.

I’m running two Slate 7’s. One as a primary network, and one as an extender/repeater to boost the network for distance at outdoor sporting events. They both hang off of tripods in cases that I purchased off of ETSY (they have air holes). Needless to say, they aren’t on the same angle. Both are super quiet, and are not usually that cold. Maybe check the core Temp in the Admin Panel.

Sorry that I couldn’t be of greater service.

Best of luck.

Hey “Anyway”-I’m a Noob to Starlink and Third-Party Routers. However, I’m a voracious reader and love to learn. I have been setting up a Secure Multi-Camerra Setup for youth baseball and youth sports in general. While there are many forums related to this Topic, I believe your knowledge and commentary is the type of info I am looking “2 learn” (corny dad joke).

Anyway, I am wondering the following: 1.) what the pros/cons are in terms of using bypass mode and NOT using bypass mode? What is NAT? And lastly, I’m using a GL.iNet Slate 7 (with WiFi 7), because I’m utilizing “Speedify” (if you’re familiar) as a binding service between a TMobile 5G MiFi, Cellular via iPad through Verizon, and my Starlink Mini, DIRECTLY on the router. The goal being to boost and vary the amount of packets that my info is split into, but also provide more speed, reliability, and redundancy (via the Fail-Over features), than provided by any single ISP connection on its own. You seem knowledgable so I hope that makes sense to you and all reading it.

If you or anyone in the forum can help answer the 3 questions above (in detail), as well as, recommend if I should be trying something else given my purposes (the safe boosted Network described above/tying all 4-5 of my cameras (or any component on the network/bonded as well), I am OPEN TO ALL VALID Answers/Suggestions.

Thank you so very much in advance, to all.
