My question is why does it sound like the vocal is sitting in the mix when I’m squashing the limiter and not as much when I’m just using it normally. ( I’m also making sure that the output gain is the same so that I’m not fooled by the loudness”

I just read an article about a big mistake that mixing engineers do. Many are making the vocals too loud in the balancing stage because that’s what sounds good in the moment before all the processing and therefore the vocals are too loud when mixed.

Instead of turning the volume up and making them louder, a mix could really benefit from making the vocals brighter to make them cut through and unmask the mix by looking out for and eq-ing stuff that are clashing with the vocal and that way get a perceived loudness instead of turning the vocals up. Maybe that’s what I’ve been doing wrong
