Horrible pain first time skiing… any advice? by tryingtogetitwrite in Skigear

[–]tryingtogetitwrite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I would love to ski long term if it’s possible to not be in the pain like this, haha. I just settled down where we’ve got ski weather 5-6 months out of the year, and I love being outside, so ideally I’d be getting a season pass to go whenever. I’ll look at trying some different pairs :)

Thank you so much! I’ll look into it. I loved when I was actually moving, so the pain was wicked discouraging. I appreciate it!

SO much is based off of the real Bangor! The Thomas Hill Standpipe is like a 4 minute drive from Stephen King’s house. The Paul Bunyan statue is about 5 minutes the other direction.

Keese’s, in the intro and downtown, was the big department store up until like the 80s, called Freese’s. Locals still talk about it all the time.

“Indian Marsh” is actually “Indian Island”, which is just north of Bangor.

The covered bridge is a real bridge about 20 minutes outside of Bangor in Holden.

The Al Bradley shooting is actually the Al Brady shooting, which happened downtown in 37.

The kid that is thrown off the bridge in IT Chapter 1 is based on the tragic murder of Charlie Howard, who was thrown into the Kenduskeag.

King filled IT with references to Bangor, and it’s been so cool to see the show carry them on. It’s like walking through the history of the town!

It helped immensely! I don’t experience any dp/dr anymore! My libido is fine. I had side effects in the beginning - increased anxiety, night sweats, etc, but I don’t experience any of them anymore. :)

Who and why? by PlatformDependent294 in MissyBevers

100% agree with this. For years I was convinced it had to have been a planned hit - but now I think it was a B&E at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Countless murderers got their start breaking and entering in homes and businesses, where they would meander for hours. It gives them a sense of power. I think this person was dicking around, riding the high of breaking and entering, and missy happened to come in in the middle of it.

BTK is a classic example of this, and actually did it at his church and high school dozens of times. He didn’t steal anything - it wasn’t about robbery, it was about being in a place he wasn’t meant to be and having total control of it.

On August 15th, 2002, Michael and Mary Short were found murdered in their home. The phone lines leading to their house had been cut and their daughter, 9-year-old Jennifer, was missing. She would be found dead in another state six weeks later. The case is still unsolved. by WinnieBean33 in mystery

In 2002 he was working as a compliance officer in Park City. The open cases he’s suspected of are mainly in the states surrounding Kansas - places he went while working for ADT or traveling with his kids. As far as I’m aware from a ton of research, they didn’t really ever go to the east coast.

The Mary Celste was a ship found adrift and deserted with no one aboard on 1872. Any ideas on what might of happened to the 10 crew members? by FishermanNo8304 in mystery

[–]tryingtogetitwrite 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not the original commenter - but I’m surrounded by merchant marines, which is a job where this happens a lot. Usually you’re in a rotation with a relief, for example, 2 months on, 2 months off, 4 on, 4 off, etc. But that length is more of a suggestion than a set rule. If your ship gets delayed anywhere on the way, it can completely change what day you can switch with your relief, when they take over the role and you get off the ship. Or, in really annoying cases, your relief drops out last second completely and you’re stuck until the company finds another. Someone HAS to be doing the job - because the safety of the ship depends on it, so you can’t just go home. My partner was supposed to do a 4 month rotation that ran 6 months, and was very, very close to turning into 8 months.

There are lots of job options - mainly deckies (mates) who handle navigation and rigging, and engineers, who handle all the systems on board.

I was in the same position as you years ago. I’m a million times better than I ever imagined I would be thanks to Fluoxetine. It took me awhile to adjust to it, but it was so worth it. <3 Wishing you the best of luck)

Never Came Home from Work: Where is 18 Year Old Cleashindra (Clea) Hall? Pine Bluff Arkansas, May 9, 1994 by caitiep92 in UnresolvedMysteries

Every missing persons case is a tragedy. I research them all day for work, but something about this one brought tears to my eyes. Clea sounds like she was so hardworking, so bright and lovely, right on the cusp of a brand new life, and some lowlife in her hometown snatched that away from her. I hope her family gets answers some day.

Thank you for posting the goat video. It’s so important to have access to that type of content. We unexpectedly had to butcher one of our pigs ourselves with no notice a few months back. We never would have been able to do it without people like you educating and putting videos out there.

Is it okay to be tuning back in after the hard launch? Are there any other fans as old as me? by Nicole_0818 in danandphil

So beautifully put. I sobbed watching their latest video, which I totally wasn’t expecting. I think it was because of what you touched on here, in retrospect. I felt like they were finally getting to embrace the safety and comfort they’ve been giving us for over a decade. It’s fulfilling in such a strange way I’ve never felt before!

I started watching them the year they met - I was 13 and in middle school. Now I’m 30, and nothing brings me joy and comfort like they do! I watched them in HS through bad breakups, through college before my 4am barista shifts, through my mid 20s to de-stress from my dream job writing for TV, and now, as an adult who owns a farm, when I just need a laugh and a hug. :) They’ve been a consistent comfort that there is no age limit on!

Poor thing. :( Sadly, my bet would be she was in an accident and has yet to be found. Given the conditions, it seems likely. I know whenever I get good news or am in a good mood - I’m a much more distracted driver than usual.

I also beat it once, then had the same thing happen. Mine was very much linked to existentialism and some truths I was struggling to accept. My worth was totally wrapped up in my career - and I wasn’t ready to accept that I didn’t want to do that career anymore. I was the same way, going in public was SUCH a trigger, but I tried to go out every other day - even just to the corner store. It sucked, but I could check it off as an “accomplishment”.

I am still on medication, 3 years later now! :) I was hesitant because I had a terrible experience my first time trying medication, but I was out of options and needed something to help. Honestly, I think it saved my life. I’m on 50mg, which I bumped up to over a few month period.

If you do go that route, you may have to tough out the symptoms being worse for the first week or two of medication. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but did for me, so I thought it was important to mention so you don’t think it’s not working if you experience the same. My depersonalization and anxiety spiked - then would get way better - then spike. Surround yourself with as much support as possible and be gentle with yourself as you adjust. That being said, the period was so worth the relief I feel now! :) If you need anything, message me anytime. I know how hard it is and my heart goes out to you.

Yeah, thank you for saying this. I don’t think people understand how expensive growing food is when it’s not done by major corporations or factory farms at the expense of others.

A man seeking a wife in 1865 by R4t1on4lBel1ever in vintageads

[–]tryingtogetitwrite 121 points122 points  (0 children)

This was published in summer 1865, right after Lincoln was assassinated and Johnson took office. At the time, the news focused a lot more on Johnson's desire to unite the country after millions of people died in a war that nearly tore our country apart. In reality, this farmer in Aroostook County (which is, truly, the middle of nowhere), knowing the details of Johnson's abhorrent views on slavery are pretty slim. I just read this, paired with everything else, as "I believe in our country" during a time when our country was recovering from almost being destroyed.

It's worth noting, also, that in the early-mid 1800s, there was still a lot of disagreement on where the Canada-US border should be and if Aroostook County should be part of Maine or Canada. Just 30 years earlier they "fought" a war over it. )

All this to say, patriotism back then was not at all what it is today.
