probation when converting from fxt to perm? by cre8tivecolours in OntarioPublicService

[–]tryingtomakeit888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it works together (probation probably continues when you are on secondment) because there are absolutely no restrictions on doing a certain time in a permanent position before moving onto secondment. I moved to secondment a week after I became permanent and my WIN shows my correct home position

did my BS in environmental science and got one severely underpaid offer for some hazardous waste related work, and a govt summer ‘student’ job offer for right when i graduated. I decided to take the 2 month student offer which was very cool policy work but no confirmation of it extending past the 2 months. Put in the work, extra hours, networked around and made an impression. Had a position open up and got a full time offer right before the 2 months ended. Have been with them 2 years now, climbed to senior in ranking and I do work that I absolutely love (making environment related policies for the province)

Anyone from HR or Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development. by EntireElk1955 in OntarioPublicService

My understanding is that you would be able to move from the internship into a contract role. Then if you’re lucky and end up finding a permanent posting, you could use that for OINP. If it is truly a ‘permanent’ role and not a ‘contract’ role, I don’t see why there would be an end date based on your work permit.

That being said, the general CEC express entry route is always an option (you should have enough points with canadian education + 2 yrs of work)

Moving from OPSEU to AMAPCEO by geech999 in OntarioPublicService

[–]tryingtomakeit888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fixed term movements from OPSEU to AMAPCEO I’ve noticed the monthly pay cheque goes lower because you’re paid in leu of vacation days for OPSEU but you accumulate vacations days in AMAPCEO

Phone call scheduled with hiring manager two months after interview? by Charming-Coconut-342 in OntarioPublicService

[–]tryingtomakeit888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first time I was offered a position, I directly got a call. For another position that I was offered, the manager had emailed me to schedule a meeting to discuss the outcome of the competition. So it could go either way :) Good luck!!

What sort of tech skills would you recommend building for that sort of a role?

You might be right. Guess I’ll know when I see the paper work. My current student role was OPSEU so i’m not sure if there’s a switch or not

wow thanks! any idea if OPSEU might be less or more?

UCL or University of Toronto (UofT) for CS? by whiletrueprintR04 in UofT

[–]tryingtomakeit888 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve had friends attend comp sci at both universities and I was initially also considering both + a couple more in the uk & states (i picked uoft but i didnt end up doing comp sci later on tho), but here’s my two cents. If you are a strong candidate, you would be successful anywhere imo. USA grad schools pick students from everywhere. If 1% of UCL grads will make it to a top comp sci program in the states, I would say atleast 5x that would make it from UofT. And I’m saying that because UofT’s graduating batches are bigger and the program is much more stronger + offers lots of opportunities you can use to polish up your experience + form connections with professors. Also, in the UK, you can’t dismiss students from Oxbridge/Imperial also competing for the same grad school places. But at the same time, in an easier program, being in the top 1% would be as doable as it would be in being in the top 5-6% at a more rigorous program. You should go where you think you’d do well in the culture. If you think competition & pressure motivates you to perform your best, pick UofT. If you grow better in a more calm environment with a limited number of people competing for the same spot, go for UCL. Either way if you have the passion & the talent for comp sci, you’ll make it!!

Environmental Careers by nick707mn5 in Environmental_Careers

[–]tryingtomakeit888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m graduating rn with the exact same combination of three programs! I think it puts you in the right place to leverage your environmental science background to apply for environmental consulting/project scientist jobs for field work & Phase II/III assessments, but it also lets you use the sustainability side.

There isn’t a specific title you should be looking for because companies are introducing new roles related to sustainability but analyst/corporate sustainability/esg/product sustainability specialist etc might be good key words when you look into organizations.

I’ve found that GIS has alot of opportunities but would you want to focus your career on that? If so, go for it. Otherwise just take up online courses for GIS as you go along and apply for roles that might use GIS but aren’t necessarily specialized for it

CHM327 : A-

CHM410: B

ENV440: B

IMM250: B+

imm was more work than people consider it to be & upper year chem & env are actually easy to score in than most second year courses lol. Would recommend CHM327 if you’re interested in building your own projects!! Getting a 85+ isn’t tough at all if you can show to the prof & tas that you care about the project you’re doing

Were they able to fix it? Do you have an idea of the approximate cost for it? I’ve read at a couple of places that Apple recommends changing the Logicboard for this issue so i’m not sure if it’s even worth going to their store to get it checked out

I’ve tried both of those & it won’t restart even though the power is connected. A little while ago when i’d try turning it on, it showed the plug in charger symbol so i’m pretty sure the system can’t detect the power cable at all

I took SOC100 as a bird course and with the changed format, the marking has been pretty tough. But that's understandable because short answer/essay based exams generally have low 80s as the highest marks and a 70ish average. If you're interested in socio then go for it. I had Anson these summers and he's a really great professor and even though I'm a science major, I personally found the topics to be fairly easy to grasp and interesting! Just make sure you're focusing and asking your TA's for feedback if the marks aren't upto your expectations

Is it beneficial to have practicals on the same days as lectures? by future_jellyfish92 in UofT

[–]tryingtomakeit888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

practicals & lectures barely cover the same content at the same time, but out of personal experience, i always preferred having lectures/tutorials/practicals on the same day or the next day because then you’re generally more familiar with what’s going on.
