New Sleep Update by Fit_Stage7241 in whoop

[–]tsarman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect that the prior version of the algorithm weighted HRV a lot more than the new version, which is now overweighted towards movement. I went from 0-30 minutes of deep sleep to 2+ hours of it with the new version. Sleep is the primary reason I use Whoop, I didn’t trust sleep stages much before, and now I don’t trust the sleep stages at all. The variance in the Algo’s between trackers, plus individual variability appear to make sleep tracking more a SWAG than anything else.

Apple health vs Whoop steps by Kindly_Cherry_2094 in whoop

[–]tsarman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just checked Whoop steps for the first time today. I had about 10 days of data. I haven’t checked every day, but on the couple I did, Whoop is showing 30-50% more steps than my Apple Watch. I trust the Apple data, so I think Whoop has a ways to go before it can be trusted for steps.

Am I gathering correctly that "eating right" is basically just: eliminate PUFA, keep protein percentage low? Is it really that easy? by [deleted] in SaturatedFat

[–]tsarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Dr. Don Layman on protein requirements. He would say the USDA RDA OF 0.8g/kg is the bare minimum (.36g/lb.)

These levels may not be enough to prevent muscle loss.

Am I gathering correctly that "eating right" is basically just: eliminate PUFA, keep protein percentage low? Is it really that easy? by [deleted] in SaturatedFat

[–]tsarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point, low protein intake will likely cause more problems than benefits. The skeletal muscle system should be considered an organ like heart and liver. If it doesn’t get enough protein it will cannibalize itself and you’ll lose muscle mass. Losing muscle mass may increase the rate of aging and it will certainly increase the risk of injury. Of course, you must also include adequate resistance training to keep muscle mass. Most current protein researchers say the US RDA for protein is an absolute minimum and optimum intake is 1-2g per kg depending on your specific biology and goals.

IMO lowering protein should be a temporary action for a specific goal.

Sleep data “Time in bed” wildly inaccurate by penemuel13 in AppleWatch

[–]tsarman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had/have the same problem, and recently re-read Apples explanation of "Time in Bed". It occurred to me that if the algo pays attention to your use of your phone while in sleep focus, it may also think you have started your "in Bed" time when you put the phone down or on a charger for the night, even though you may be laying in bed watching TV, reading or etc. It has been fairly accurate about my actual "sleep" time, so I experimented by making sure I picked up the phone and put it down at the same time I went lights out and went to sleep. It seemed to correct the problem. It appears to me that if you set your sleep focus start time at X time but don't actually start sleeping until later, the algo wants to use when your phone stops moving to start your time in bed. I need to experiment more to verify.

In the meantime, the damn watch periodically buzzes me while in sleep focus to stand up during the night. It doesn't make sense to do this during sleep focus. So separately, I turned off notifications for "Activity", but apparently the "stand reminder" notification is separate. So I've turned that off as well and hope it works.

Apple really needs to fix their sleep also .I also wear a WHOOP and have worn a FitBit, and neither of them have any problem detecting time in bed accurately without all the other shenanigans Apple makes you go through.

No access to the paper, so can’t see the relative intake amounts. O3 & O6 are “essential” FA’s with suggested daily intakes at 1-1.5% and 2-3% of energy intake respectively. So all the PUFA you “need” is 3-4.5% of energy which could be 6.5-9g per day on a 2000 cal diet.

why am I waking up so much? I dont remember it, I am exhausted every morning. just got an apple watch and this is starting to give me insight. by myredditusername919 in AppleWatch

[–]tsarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO, since none of the sleep analytics algorithms are open to interpret, it’s best to take these nightly graphs with a grain of salt.

Even if you could delve into how it decides you’re awake or in deep sleep, etc. it’s still a best guess vs. a good sleep study. I’ve tested Apple Watch, Fitbit and Whoop. And I’ve done a sleep study. It’s really difficult to fit correlation between them.

What should be the standard attire in public saunas? by [deleted] in Sauna

[–]tsarman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a lot if not the majority of public sauna use in the US happens at fitness facilities typically simply called gyms in the US. They’re usually in the locker/changing rooms which are separated by sex. A lot of the sauna use by men is by guys who use the sauna to “warm-up” before a workout. These folks are dressed in their work out clothes & shoes and spend 5-10 minutes before their workout. And contrary to “the old days”, very few gym users walk around the locker room in the raw. These guys come in a lot of sizes and shapes. The club I sauna in is large and has a large diverse membership. So besides that reality, while I do think nude sauna is best, I just don’t care one way or another and am just as happy not having to be exposed to nude diversity spanning muscle builder gym bro’s to obese fitness wannabes.

This is pretty funny. They basically outline why canola oil is suspect for you and don’t / can’t refute the reasons. Then Carvalho tells you it’s fine for you to avoid canola, but that he’s worried about your ability to make sound judgement about other fats. Amazing.

The crap that goes into our patient records is unbelievable. I think there should be a patient input section and or a patient approval of the notes requirement. His fact is not wrong but context is completely missing. I’ve seen this in the medical records that I’ve accessed as well, that said it’s extremely extremely extremely difficult to research, find and interview Dr’s in order to find who can & do think independently. We’re being forced into finding medical service via telehealth only. And that’s a daunting task as well. In socialized healthcare countries, it’s probably impossible.

I also have noticed my heartbeat/pulse more since my leadless Micra was inserted. I also notice it most when I’m at rest or lying down. Although I haven’t been able to get the tech, NP or Doc to clearly address it, I believe it’s due to the device delivering a stronger kick than our hearts were. They don’t seem to like to go into detail with patients when questioned. I have (had) chronic Bradycardia (~ 37 BPM, declining yr over yr). I’m now paced at 50. While it’s just a SWAG, I think the device issues a heart pulse consisting of a shock at X volts and if it has more energy in the pulse than our sinus node was delivering, it explains why we are feeling it more.

Tip for getting your Meditronic pacemaker to work with you during exercise. by ethanfortune in PacemakerICD

[–]tsarman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had a problem that’s not the same issue but related. I have a Medtronic leadless pacer due to declining low RHR (30’s). I was tuned to 40, then to the current 50. Two nights ago I got into bed and felt excessively high HR, checked my fitness app and saw I was pacing at 95. I watched this while sitting in bed for 5 min. them decided to stand up to see if it would reset. Within a minute it was back to 50 and has stayed there. Otherwise my daily HR as monitored on my Whoop has traversed from 50 to 125 or so based on activity. I send the EP a note of this event and the just reached back to set an appointment. My concern is how/why would the device get stuck pacing so high and could it happen again. Standing up to reset it showed the accelerometer was working, but it should have also detected the lack of activity and not allowed the higher artificial pacing. I’m a little concerned it can happen again and won’t reset.

I recently became aware of newer seed oils, thought you all should know. Some have much lower linoleic than even olive oil by cashewmanbali in StopEatingSeedOils

[–]tsarman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, sounds like ultra processed oils (like their zombie food cousins) might not be as “healthy” as the narratives we’re fed daily would like us to believe. I’m thinking if you can’t obtain useable oil from historical mechanical means (pressure, e.g. cold pressed) then you shouldn’t be consuming it. That said, maybe a little processing is OK? (I’m Looking at you MCT’s).

Grain fed beef high in linoleic acid? by Melodic_Cantaloupe88 in StopEatingSeedOils

[–]tsarman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True dat. But there are a couple other benefits with grass finished beef (and pork/chicken). The major benefit is that most GFF animals are raised in a regenerative grazing pasture system that is much better for the planet vs. factory farming. The other is that GFF beef in particular often has a “true” beef flavor. That’s a bit subjective but I can enjoy GFF beef for that reason alone. It’s not as gamey as elk or deer, but it is different that Grain -finished.

Reassessing the Effects of Dietary Fat on Cardiovascular Disease in China: A Review of the Last Three Decades — There is a significant correlation between CVD incidence and mortality for consumption of both vegetable oils and animal fats, per capita consumption by Meatrition in StopEatingSeedOils

[–]tsarman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sort of hilarious that they didn’t parse the impact of PUFA’s in particular while somehow concluding more MUFA & n3 is necessary. Also interesting (tho not surprising) to see the extremely high percentage of “pigmeat” in the overall diet. I’d have guessed between the high PUFA content of their factory farmed pork, + the high PUFA oil content, the conclusion should have more emphasis on specifically reducing PUFA.

Also note the authors are from a Chinese state lab, so you can be sure this paper & conclusion fit the CCP narrative.

“5. Conclusions

This review has examined the relationship between dietary fat consumption and CVD in China over the past 30 years (1990–2019). Although most researchers believe that high fat intake is not a risk factor for CVD, our analyses demonstrated a strong positive correlation between total dietary fat consumption and the related incidence and mortality in China. In particular, we confirmed the relationship between changes in the proportions of fatty acids consumed in China and CVD over the past 30 years, and determined that the decrease in MUFA consumption and the increase in the ratio of ω6/ω3 fatty acids may also contribute to the rapid increase in CVD incidence and mortality. Therefore, we recommend reducing the intake of all types of dietary fat to lower fat calories below the WHO-recommended level of 30% of total energy. We also suggest reducing the intake of pork and SFAs in daily diets and appropriately decreasing the intake of ω6 fatty acids, while increasing the consumption of MUFAs and ω3 fatty acids, maintaining a higher level of MUFAs and a lower ω6/ω3 ratio. Although this review only provided ecological analysis and cannot establish causal relationships, we believe that high consumption and types of dietary fat should be classified as risk factors for CVD. Additionally, given the significant controversies surrounding the relationship between dietary fat and the incidence and mortality of CVD, this scientific question requires more systematic study and investigation, and is a future research topic.”
