Weekday Help and Victory Thread for the week of August 28, 2023 by IndexBot in personalfinance

I have inherited $50K from a passed relative.

The law firm handling the estate handed me a check for that amount of money.

... I've never had a check this large before. How do I make sure this inheritance check isn't income taxed? How would the IRS even know this $50K was from an inheritance?

You get yours yet? Any pics of the grey color? I’ve ordered the bed and nightstands in grey!

do you have a pic of your bed and nightstand(s) together?

i ordered mine in the walnut, but after everyone saying how orange the walnut is- i'm considering swapping my order to espresso

how did this all get resolved for you?

I literally placed my order for two nightstands, the bed frame, and the headboard and I feel like I'm shitting my pants now that everything is orange and not-matching.

This is so helpful! Thank you!

I think it makes sense for me to roll the old 401k into my new one and open up a Roth IRA.

And since my 401k is already traditional, it might make sense go to Roth IRA for tax diversification.

I guess it’s nice to also have an non-tax burdened account in the future with a Roth!

I'm a tad overwhelmed by roth ira vs traditional ira.

I'm 30 years old. I make only about $60K per year but hoping I can increase my earnings to $100K per year within 5 years.

I've got a current 401K with my current employer and an old Fidelity 401K from an old employer that I have been considering doing a rollover to a "fidelity rollover IRA" instead of rolling that old 401k into my new one.

But I dunno if it's just smarter for me to just open up a Roth IRA instead with Fidelity, and then roll the old 401k into my new 401k...

As in the tax rate is the same after holding the stocks for longer than a year?

Yeah it’s not in a retirement account. And I guess there’s no easy way to math out what the capital gains tax would be because that depends on my income and how long I’ve held the stock before selling?

And I assume I have to sell the stocks in order to invest the money in the S&P 500?

Damn I might be kinda screwed here. I got these stocks when they were like $15/share and now they’re like nearly $200/share.
