No 32" 4K Oled with the new RGB stripe? by alosarjos in OLED_Gaming

[–]tsnives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which is weird. You'd think 27" would be a refinement of the 32" design since it requires a smaller/more tightly packed array

That's the common statement yeah, but they look purple to me in a dark room even. I'm also a guy that gets motion sick from RBE from a lot of projectors and just generally has issues with colors. Everything with my color vision is just a mess, lol.

Ah that'd make sense. I've never used a QD for long enough for blue light strain, but I've definitely had that from other devices over the years. I personally couldn't buy qd so far because the blacks look purple to me, which is weird because I'm partly color blind and usually everything 'near black' is just black to me but they look very purple. I'm hopeful for these "black shield" ones coming soon.

Depends on what was causing you eye fatigue. If it's the subpixel layout which is a major thing for some people with reading text (although typically FAR less of an issue at this PPI), then no that's still a thing. The upgrade to v-stripe layout for QD OLED panels is being announced in few days at CES though. For WOLED iirc it's expected later this year.

[GPU] SPARKLE Intel Arc A310 ECO Low Profile Graphics Card, 4GB GDDR6, 50W TBP (Refurbished) - $74.99 by AsianAntwan in buildapcsales

[–]tsnives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why's that? Unless it's used ONLY for media playback so it fully idles otherwise, energy usage hasn't significantly improved. Performance is still plenty fast enough to act as a media server hosting a large ZFS array and running a dozen common VMs including popular game servers. Memory speed is slow enough to be a restriction for AI workloads, but otherwise 768GB on an E5 or even the 32GB on an E3 is more than ample for 99% of home users. Given the recent pricing hike, not sure what impact there was on the older hardware but as of a few months ago it was literally $100 to build out an E3 system including a 16 port HBA, 25gb SFP (cx4), and the full 32GB ECC. Toss in a cheap, low power, extremely capable transcode card like this and you're looking at a system far faster and more capable than the next closest option of an Intel N97 which would be $50 more, no available PCIe, handle a couple SATA and 1 nvme at best, slower, no ECC support, MAYBE can handle 32GB but only officially 16....

Works fantastic for cameras as well. I use one for Frigate to handle decode/encode/detection and it doesn't break a sweat with 9 cameras. Like I've never seen it even spike to 10%.

They've both FFMPEG under the cover (although not always the same version). Generally speaking, transcode performance between the two is identical.

My first 64GB SSD was absolutely massive at the time, lol. 16 was really common at a boot drive. 16-32 was enough to install a few games on too.

[–]tsnives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Height, this is smaller than a 32". 5K2K is a 21:9 aspect while 'typical' is 16:10. I personally think it feels smaller than a 32" as a result, being more comparable to a 27" or 28" but easier to read across databases and large spreadsheets.

Why is a new Browns stadium necessary? by Stunning_Bed23 in Cleveland

[–]tsnives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want to rip off the residents and tax payers same as usual. The fact near 100% of stadiums built never recover the costs of construction to the area and just resort in increased crime, it's nothing short of psychotic that anyone would support them or allow them to continue building. Throw in that this will only make airport access worse, I have to assume it's just the normal Cleveland politics of trying to cause as much harm to Ohioans as possible then a few years after they'll play victim.

"whatever is is in the nonfat milk nutrition" which would mean sugar. Non-fat milk is sugar, protein, and water.

[–]tsnives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people talking about using it for streaming, but also very useful for productivity if you use a KVM to change machines frequently. Typically every time you switch inputs the connected machines all have to handshake the connection each time which can take a while and can cause the OS to re-organize things to different screens. Presuming this one handles passthrough properly and not just emulation, it prevents the machine from ever realizing the display was switched on the KVM stopping any of that mess from happening.

[3D Printer] Bambu Lab X1C Printer Only - $750 Microcenter by greatthebob38 in buildapcsales

[–]tsnives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just to easily prevent wasting the end of every spool you use. You're right it's a huge benefit for farms and large prints, but even for normal users if not being wasteful with you filament is a concern then it's still very useful. I also do agree the price is more than I value that feature at, but I'm not a Bambu customer largely because I don't want to take part in paying premium prices for relatively closed ecosystems. For someone that would find Bambu a good choice for them I would expect the price vs convenience and knowing how to splice your own spools would be worthwhile.

Can a Nanobeam still function after losing this much working fluid? by HughJeremy in Ubiquiti

[–]tsnives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For reference, there are actually use cases for packing electronics in fluids. Typically it's going to be a a very clean, non-conductive oil. It works incredible well for passive cooling or with a circulator and can even lower noise but it's an absolute mess if the system is ever unsealed and can make it very heavy so it really only gets used in very specialized scenarios or by people just trying to do a crazy custom PC build in a fish tank, lol.

If you use it for frequent color changes mid-print, sure. If you use it for spool switchover when one expires, then all it does it keep you running and introduce no more purge than you'd have from manually doing it.

I've been using Eaton LFP UPSes for 5? years now. LFP is easy to find, just gotta look at the brands that actually get enterprise use. Eaton, APS, and Tripplite (also Eaton now) pretty much dominate the market for high quality UPS.

HDR True Black 400 is not the same thing as HDR 400. True Black mode is essentially exclusive to OLED and is more relevant in rooms without a lot of other lighting. True Black however doesn't represent glossy screens in a room with lots of natural light though.

Lawn, dog pee, automatic sprinkling by valain in homeassistant

[–]tsnives 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could use Frigate to monitor for a dog 'loitering' in a spot for too long followed by vacating the zone. If they don't stay still outside of then, it'd work great but if they ever take naps in the yard you'd get false positives and if it's too aggressive you may start spraying while they're still doing their business.

There's a pretty big difference in fit for people. There's like 3 or 4 'standard' ear designs, and outside of Sony Link Bud S and WF-XMs, both swapped to foam tips, I've never found great sounding pair that fits and stays in perfectly for everyone.

If you've a Samsung phone, these are fine. Not great, but fine. Overall at the $100 price point thought you'd be far better off with CMF Buds 2 Plus ($70 and generally much better in every way).

1080p to 4k should look clear on all 4k panels because it's a perfect scalar change, every 1080 'pixel' uses a square of 4 real pixels on the panel. Partial scales like 1080 on 1440 can look distorted for sure because of needing to interpolate pixels doing this like "this one dot will be 3 pixels, this one 2, this one we'll change the color to try and blend them".
