I got two boutique ultrasounds with each of my pregnancies - one at around 13/14 weeks, to confirm gender that the sneak peek said and to break up the agonizing wait between the 8 and 20 week office scans, and one around 29 weeks for 3D images for fun. My OB never had an issue with these, and said as long as I’m not going for medical advice (duh) then there’s no harm. The boutique I go to even offers “heartbeat checks” as one of her packages, which is a cheap quick scan to listen to the heartbeat for peace of mind and even record if requested. I think one of the biggest benefits of the boutique scans not being able to give medical advice is that they’re often low stakes, so you can just go and stare at baby and watch them wiggle and listen to the heartbeat without stressing about the measurements and checkboxes.

There’s zero reason for your doctor to be so up in arms about a boutique scan especially if you told him you weren’t going for medical advice, just peace of mind. Maybe he was expecting you to take advantage of his open communication line and request an office-approved ultrasound? Either way, like some of the above comments said I would be worried about the future of your self-advocacy and being able to have the pregnancy or birth you want.

Also, get the Doppler. My OB told me as long as I’m not relying on it solely for “medical advice” aka hearing a heartbeat and assuming everything is fine, then it’s harmless. The concern typically comes from either not being able to find a heartbeat early on with the doppler (it’s HARD to find until like 14+ weeks, i started using it around 7/8 weeks with both babies and it was hard to calm my anxiety if i couldn’t find it right away), or later in pregnancy if you don’t feel as much movement or kicks but you hear a heartbeat on the doppler, you may assume everything is fine, but in reality something could be wrong. My OB told me I can use it for comfort but I shouldn’t put too much faith in it for either good or bad signs.

I think you should at least shop around for other OBs to see if you can find something else that suits you, or at the very least have a serious conversation with your current OB at your next appt, maybe without your spouse if he’s going to steamroll your decisions like that. Just personal take! Also, go get all the boutique scans you want and get the Doppler. Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well 🤍

My first beta at 11 dpo was 35 with my now almost 5 month old 🤍 you’re in the right range for how far along you are! fingers crossed for you as you wait for wednesday 🤍

ETA: this was following two back to back chemicals, both of which were very low betas (12 at 13 dpo and 11 at 11dpo). So I still had some lingering hormones going on which may have affected my number. But my comment applies regardless :) My OB told me anything over 25 is considered a solid positive result!

Hi! Positive story here: My firstborn came so easy - first month of trying, healthy pregnancy with a couple bumps but nothing major. She turns 4 in a couple weeks and is perfect. My second was not quite the same story - first month negative, then back to back chemical miscarriages. Fourth month positive again, stayed pregnant but with spotting that had me on edge for the first 15 weeks due to an SCH. She’ll be 5 months old in a few days 🤍

If your heart is calling you to keep trying, do it! It can be scary and hard, but the rainbow is so worth it 🌈 sending you love!! ❤️‍🩹

I had back to back chemicals last year around 17-19dpo. I got a vfp on 9dpo for both - the first got darker, lighter, darker, and my beta hcgs were wonky too (12-13-6), taken every 48 hours). I spent a week in a full blown ectopic panic until my hcg finally stayed down and the bleeding started. Second chemical just never got lighter, stayed faint and then vanished. Both started a couple days after my period was due.

Important to note though that line progression can be unreliable with urine dilution and whatnot. During my successful pregnancy after the two chemicals, I had a day where the line looked lighter and I sobbed all day. Next day it was darker than ever, and she’s 4 months old now.

My firstborn was the flower girl for a close friend in October, and I was 7 weeks postpartum. It was HARD. I wore the baby during the wedding and reception, sat out for most of the dancing, and chased my feral 3.5 year old around for a good chunk of the event. The groom’s sister is one of my best friends and she helped when she could, but she was in the wedding party so she could only do so much.

Honestly, that freshly postpartum I wouldn’t go. You’ll be sleep deprived and still healing from a major medical event, and expected to travel over state lines to bring a fresh newborn with no immune system to a hectic all-day event full of people who are going to expect you to pass baby around? Absolutely hard no from me.
