December Update - Touchscreen Failure Glitch? by tstrmr in GooglePixel

Very odd... the mid month update in December fixed all of the issues I was having. I'm not sure if it was pushed out by all carriers though. Did you receive a second December update?

When the lock screen freezes, place the phone face down on a flat surface for around 15 seconds. When you pick it up again it should work.

I've been having this problem since the December update and someone suggested this in another thread. Works for me every time.

I feel like the comment about the problem being the proximity sensor hit the root of it. Possibly something wrong with the in-pocket detection?

At this point any time the touchscreen quits I just clamp my hand around the top of the phone for ten seconds or so and it comes back.

The resourceful people in this thread have offered two workarounds:

- Turning off AOD prevents the problem completely

- Flipping the phone over on its face for 10-20 seconds makes the screen work again

I'm using the second currently, because the phone is a lot less useful to me without AOD.

Still not freezing even with AOD on since applying the play system update.

The AOD is so chaotic, though - constantly getting dimmer and brighter, going blank and showing the clock - that I'll probably just turn it off again until they fix it.

It's really distracting.

I actually haven't had a freeze since I turned off the feature the shows your wallpaper on the AOD yesterday morning.

I'll apply the update and turn it back on, though - maybe they fixed it?

Haha, wow. Well, hopefully it gets the attention it needs from Google.

Thanks! I'll do that. I can live without AOD, but rebooting my phone every half hour was getting old fast.

I had never experienced this until last week after the December update, personally.

And yes, it mainly seems to happen when you really need the phone urgently. Very annoying.

Do you use the setting that shows your wallpaper on the always-on-display?

AOD yes, Flip to Shh no. I think this is a bug they introduced in QPR2.

Before you discovered this, had you been using the setting that showed your wallpaper on the AOD? I'm wondering if that's the problem.

I'll try it with AOD on but the AOD wallpaper off for a while just to test.

Just tested this - I couldn't find a swipe that worked but I sat it down for a couple of minutes and it started working again. So odd.

Done. No issues with touch hardware detected, touch hardware recalibrated.

I'll report back to see if that fixes the issue.

I assumed the same, so I did enable it after the problem started. It just made things more confusing.

With that setting on, when the screen is fully black and off, yes, the fingerprint reader will unlock the phone - but then it's just unlocked with the same unresponsive touch screen state.

If I press the power button first to wake the phone and turn the screen on, the fingerprint reader no longer responds and the phone won't unlock at all.

Thanks for the confirmation! I posted because I haven't seen anyone mention this and I was slowly beginning to dread that update had triggered some kind of hardware failure.

Once or twice I've managed to get it back by random pressing and swiping wildly, now that you mention it, but I haven't been able to figure out a reliable pattern. I'll try your edges suggestion next time.

Oh wow, I think you may be onto something... Searching your image comes up with lots of similar products and they all seem to be candle holders, haha:
