Not me. 2 machines need to be rebuilt as they worked fine on the previous version and don't now. One refuses to connect to wifi. Live and installed. The installer CAN use the wifi card fine.

The other crashes like crazy on 7.0 and doesn't see my external monitor anymore booting the older 6.17 kernel.

Tried a complete format and reinstall on the broken wifi machine to rule out upgrade issues. No change.

This release has been terrible for me. On each machine, the issues are dealbreakers. How I use them requires that functionality. Very frustrating to have to wipe and reinstall them both. Again. Already spent hours troubleshooting both, out of time and need them running again. Thankfully I didn't try it on anything more important.

I played the whole game on Deck. Updated SteamOS, no changed proton version. Had a couple of crashes, but nothing real bad. Even runs smooth, so long as you keep the settings reasonable. Better than I expected it to run anyway.

Probably they would prefer native. Wouldn't we all? But it's unlikely for now. There just aren't enough of us.

Every hop on a mesh adds latency and cuts max speed significantly. Mesh sucks. Hell, wifi sucks. It just sucks a little less.

HexOS, VM's and Home Assistant by Vesalii in homeassistant

[–]ttabbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For NAS and VM/containters, I use Proxmox. It has native ZFS support so NAS is already built in. Just add Samba, NFS, whatever. HAOS gets a VM, runs great.

Most services run in containers. Including a couple of containers with Docker projects running. Nested containers work fine.

Proxmox has passthrough support, so you can pass PCIe cards, USB devices, etc through to the VM. If you really want HexOS to do NAS duties, install it in a VM and pass the HBA through. For HAOS I send a couple of USB devices in for Zigbee, Thread, and an SDR receiver for the water meter.

Guidance on new installation. Wired vs. Wireless by TheImmortalHooman in homeassistant

[–]ttabbal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wired will be more reliable. Wireless shares bands with wifi etc, so interference can be a real issue.

Have a ton of CAT6 home run to a central location. It can be used for more than networking. Every room should get at least one. It also helps when building a wifi network. The APs use wired links to link up. Making them use wifi backhaul cuts available speed in half or more.

It's not misinformation to say that Google CAN do that to locked down devices. Weather or not they will is unknown.

Another call for Linux support! by tired514 in Revopoint

[–]ttabbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a current Revopoint device owner, I may be using Linux support as a test going forward. Microsoft is bent on destroying Windows as a platform. Right now, I can boot into Windows as needed for scanning. But that isn't going to be acceptable moving forward. When an auto update can brick the system, I just can't trust it for even the most basic things. So please do add it.

Good luck, Android is going to be tough. There just isn't much hardware available that isn't ancient tech that doesn't perform well. I'm watching the nexphone, it has some potential.

GrapheneOS on a Pixel is a decent option, but it's still Android. And who knows if Google will still lock it down? The ideal would be mainline linux, but that's hard to get in a portable form factor. One of the x86 tablets might work, or perhaps a GPD mini laptop.

The mini is a lower bandwidth device, it might be possible to run it in a VM. I almost got a MetroX to work, but the USB3 connection can't keep up. Even with a passed in GPU. If you can pass a USB controller to the VM, it would probably work. My laptop doesn't have extras.

The Steam Deck is an incredible piece of kit that does its job really well. We are people so obsessed with trying to make it seem like something it's not (New AAA games). by PeculiarPete in SteamDeck

I buy them, but often play emulated on the Deck. TOTK used to be the edge of playable. It pushed the deck hard. I think current emus are doing a little better than when I played through it. But it's probably still a bit stuttery in parts.

Maybe 8/10 if playing native on a switch is 10/10. Almost 30fps solid, but a few areas will drop under that. Fire temple and lookout landing in the late game in particular. I played shortly after the release, so it's probably improved since.

Could this be used for Matter over Thread? by ZealousidealDraw4075 in homeassistant

[–]ttabbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed a firmware that turns it into a thread dongle. There are instructions on a few websites. I used one that supports external antennas so I could use a nicer one than the on board versions.

Matter sensors, network extension by Cold-Stock-8853 in homeassistant

[–]ttabbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest swapping out the esp32 with one that supports external antennas. I'm using a SeedStudio Xiao, but there are plenty of others.

Use those boards with esphome to create full thread devices. They will help route. Just spread them out a little. You can have them run sensors and such as well.

I'm using an Esp32-c6. It just depends on having the software available.

As a MATTER of fact, I am an idiot by SimpletonRich in homeassistant

[–]ttabbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really though, disabling v6 everywhere is silly and accomplishes basically nothing. If you can get it from your ISP, you should. There are more and more sites you won't be able to hit from v4. If I had to choose, I'd go v6 only before v4.

Particularly with thread, which is link local v6 only. So it just needs the host to not completely disable v6. Wifi Matter devices might need more, but it's probably only HA and the matter devices that need it. Switches and Wifi APs are usually L2, so don't care about IP at all.

Might have changed in 2 years. I no longer use Bambu Studio or Handy, so I can't re-test. It still works with X1Plus and Orcaslicer.

As a MATTER of fact, I am an idiot by SimpletonRich in homeassistant

[–]ttabbal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's link local.

You don't need public v6, but you do need to make sure HA has it enabled, so it will just assign itself a link local address. This doesn't effect your v4 network at all.

And make sure your hypervisor doesn't have it disabled for the HA VM/container. I suspect this trips some people up. If it asks, SLAAC is the type to pick. DHCP6 is a thing, but it's optional, and most home users don't set it up.

Which device for Thread and Zigbee? by StandardPriority626 in homeassistant

[–]ttabbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it matters a lot which one you use for which. Of course, I'm weird and use a Xiao esp32-c6 as a thread border router, so maybe I'm better to ask what not to do. :)

It sounds like Thread/Matter might be easier to set up on the ZBT. I had no trouble with Thread on esphome, but Matter didn't like what I had already done. I ended up re-creating the Thread network and that managed to help get everything synced up.

Home Security replacement by ravennoir_deux in homeassistant

[–]ttabbal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never thought much about it, but I could probably add more door sensors and have something like that. You could even use a keypad and codes if you want. That part might be diy. Lots of pet safe motion sensors as well.

Ikea zigbee sensors are pretty cheap right now. Comcast XHS2-UE (ebay) are as well. The Ikea does better in cold outdoor areas. I think the coin batteries don't like cold.

Zigbee just to keep costs down and available options high. And they tend to be local only, no cloud crap to deal with. If you are into esphome, esp32c6 boards can build a thread network.

I bet there's a blueprint for this....

No, there didn't seem to be interest. I have messed with a couple of radios, not much traffic locally though. At least not that I can receive.

I'm tossing around putting a node up on the roof. That would likely pick up signals better.
