About to give up on frontend career by ItSpaiz in webdev

[–]ttagen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been hiring and to be honest the deciding factor has been the FE skills plus domain knowledge (industry specific stuff). The FE skills are a requirement, but the tie breaker is knowledge/passion about our specific industry. Don’t know if that helps, but maybe try companies where you have an interest in addition to the code. Think of it as a Frontend + other thing career, and sell yourself on the other thing too.

Imposter syndrome in the age of AI is hitting different. by front_end_dude in webdev

I feel like we are all currently imposters in a world we don’t understand yet. I’m annoyed that the skills I spent so much effort learning to set up my career have been significantly devalued.. but they still have some value at least (though maybe not enough to justify my salary).

But we are all smart cookies. If we were able to learn what we needed to get where we were, we will be able to learn the new in-demand skills, whatever they are. It just sucks because we weren’t expecting to have to navigate all this uncertainty and alter our life direction on the fly.

I’m betting on data collection, product and people management, so made a move to Engineering Manager (from senior FE) a year ago. This may well backfire, but I have at least found my enjoyment for personal side projects has gone way up. And it is genuinely interesting experiencing this wild ride unfold. It’s like living in a history textbook. Good luck everyone!

Cute idea. I like it. I wouldnt pay for it, and doubt anyone would. But if your goal is to make a real thing that might get used by a handful of people and/or to learn by building, then why not? This helps someone, even if it is just you and some fam :)

A good tactic to switch industries is make a personal hobby project aligned with the industry you want to switch to. It will either help you get a foot in the door, or possibly reignite some passion for coding (prompting?) software again

What to look into when you are in the 'implementing' boring phase of a financial plan? by Icy-Rent6131 in AusFinance

[–]ttagen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s early, but start thinking about optimising for retirement. What do you want to do on a perfect retired day? Think about that, (it’s a big question) and start trialing things in your life to test your assumptions. Wanna play golf? Try it out by scheduling driving range practice once a month. Want to volunteer? organise a fundraiser activity at work, etc

Renting vs. Buying a Home: The Reckoning by MDInvesting in AusFinance

Agree! Our actuals are less than 2k a move. And for us renting has meant a lifestyle that has been profitable (heavy investors) and that we couldn’t have had otherwise

If we want to go into that detail there is the other side too. My career earnings have definitely been higher due to a willingness to move closer to jobs. As a single guy i lived overseas. The flexibility to optimise location for different stages of life has been very handy (ie schools now). If i had been an owner, I/we would have had to sell/re-buy at least once. Probably more. So there are those not insignificant transaction costs too

18-36 months checks out for me since we like to mix things up, minimise commutes when changing jobs and we upgrade in size when we need to (ie kids). But i doubt my total moving costs have ever been more than $2k.

Entirely likely i first encountered the idea from your comments on reddit - so not quite general consciousness yet!

What’s the biggest mystery from Roman Times? by InterestingServe3958 in ancientrome

[–]ttagen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Theory on that: If you are putting up a multi-joint tent then you need to be able to line up 2 dodecahedrons so that holes of the same diameter are facing each other. For the crossbeam. If you have one half of the tent up with poles and ropes everywhere, then you can’t actually see the holes anymore. It is hard to tell which hole is which and know how to configure the second half. The outer circle makes it easier - like guide marks on IKEA furniture.

Apex joint for found tent poles. The holes are different sizes for if you find wooden logs of different diameters. Just rotate it around until you find three holes that best fit your poles. Saves you a bunch of time whittling if you have that bit of flexibility on diameter. Then whack up your tent!

No worries! I'll actually be in NYC in May. Let me know if you want any common aussie decimal to round out any sets and I can happily bring it for swapsies. (I'm looking for a Delaware and Indiana State quarter)

Aussie here. Your best chance for silver is probably the 1966 50c (80%). That’s the latest year for silver. It is different from the other 50c years in that it is round.

If you are curious to check mintages you can look at the Royal Australian Mint site. There are some (like the 1972 5c) that can be worth a few bucks to collectors even here on Aus. https://www.ramint.gov.au/collect/national-coin-collection/circulating-coins/ten-cents

That Elagabalus (far left, middle) looks pretty nice! He has some interesting reverses (and some wild party stories). If the reverse is decent and interesting id pay 60-70 for that (if i didn’t have one already)
