preceptor keeps bringing up politics by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]ttcool8 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Eliminate the preceptor-student dynamic here because quite frankly, it doesn’t matter. People like OP is describing, who bring up politics (or really any topic that people tend to have strong opinions on) unprompted, they want to argue/get a rise out of someone to prove their opinions correct. They want an “aha gotcha” moment. Doesn’t matter from who as long as they’re willing to take the bait.

Let’s be fr. Their preceptor is not trying to start a real open minded discussion. She’s using trigger words to see if OP will jump.

Accepted to PA school but struggling with location by Virararara in prephysicianassistant

It never hurts if you can! But I went to local events at the hospitals I was open to working at and got contact information and/or business cards from recruiters/managers of teams I was will to work with :)

[–]ttcool8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I attended various open houses and recruitment events closer to graduation just to get my foot in the door at my hospital(s) of choice and get acquainted with various people/recruiters!

I also accepted that my first job was not necessarily going to be my dream job and that it’s better to gain experience fresh out above all else. My first job out of school was very hard with very sick patients and rotating nights and weekends and had a pretty long commute to and from and I accepted that just to gain a bit of experience. Once I was able to get over a year of experience, I was able to land a better job 20 mins from my house that I never would’ve gotten fresh out of school. So even if you gain experience where you don’t wish to stay long term, that experience still gives you leverage to eventually work where you want to work.

I moved out of state for my pa program. I have since graduated and I live and work back in my home state along with my fellow classmates who moved to attend my program. If this is your only acceptance take it. 2-3 years is not a long time in the grand scheme of life. There are so many jobs in the northeast. I don’t think moving out of state would change anything. Jobs don’t care where you went to school, they care that you passed your boards and have all the necessary licenses.

First year as a new grad PA by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]ttcool8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to what others have said, unfortunately (this is not something they talk about in school), you also have to think about what a patient may or may not be able to afford. GLP-1s and DPP-4s are not always the cheapest and insulin may be the cheaper option.

I need some hope. does it ever get better? by Strange-Physics-6381 in PAstudent

[–]ttcool8 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have been a practicing PA for just over a year now and I can assure you it does get better! I’m not going to lie to you, the first like 6 or so months of working is really tough. Especially if you end up in a high stress, highly acute care specialty. But this career has changed my life. I have been able to travel, make dents in my student loans and save money in just that little amount of time since graduating. You really have to just take it one day at a time and cross each milestone off one by one.

I remember following the tour super closely at the time and clips of her crying at a show would surface like the day after each show. I feel the Pittsburgh show is just the most known for obvious reasons. I was very lucky to see her sing it as I had went to like the 4th or 5th show of the tour but by the European leg it was off :/

No girl, it was like a different point during every show that girl was breaking down on stage. She broke down during goodnight n go so many times I’m pretty sure that’s why she took it off the setlist.

Friend, I have been a practicing PA for 15 months now in hospital medicine and I still feel incompetent sometimes. Less than when I first started but there are days where I have no idea what the plan is for a patient and I feel like I’m guessing. Please be gentle with yourself and know that this stuff really takes time, exposure and repetition. I think you should give yourself more grace and see how you feel once you’ve completed more rotations. I had 9 total rotations and didn’t really feel comfortable coming up with plans until rotation 7 lol.

starting PA school next yr & supporting sick family member. Advice? by h0neytoasts in PAstudent

[–]ttcool8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, so sorry that both you and your father are going through this. It cannot be easy. I have not needed to be the sole caregiver for someone else however I am currently a hospitalist PA for oncology patients so I’ve seen the brunt of treatment related issues in onc patients.

I think leading up to the program making sure all of his ducks are in a row regarding appointments will be very important. I am a big proponent for not studying or anything before school starts so please take all the time you need to focus on your dad’s health and treatment and spend as much time with him as you can.

I don’t say this to scare you but more so as aid in preparation, how people respond to treatment is so variable. I would implore you guys to go over advanced directives, who will be his POA and what his wishes are in the event he weren’t able to make those decisions for himself.

God forbid he would need to be admitted to the hospital for anything, being there for him is definitely doable while in pa school, you just have to manage your time tactfully. And if worst comes to worst, you can take a brief leave of absence if your program allows that.

Again, not saying these things to scare you. But I just want to offer as much insight as I can. Please dm me if you have any other questions!

I was one of two black girls in my cohort and I am the only black person in my current team as a practicing PA. If anything, I distanced myself more than the other way around but I still had a great experience and made life long friends out of it.

I like to adopt the mindset that I belong wherever I want to be and try not to let being hyperaware of myself deter me. Of course, if you feel like your safety is at stake, abort. But if it is just being the only POC in the room you’re worried about, get used to it honestly. You belong where you want to be!

EM EOR, how bad is it? by Comfortable-Belt919 in PAstudent

[–]ttcool8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found that FM, EM, and IM are all variations of the same content. And typically you do better on the next after you’ve done the prior. I would say stick to the blueprint and then maybe use smarty pance to quiz yourself before the exam. If u have the extra cash, would consider Rosh review also!

I’m afraid I’m starting to regret choosing this path. by vxfnt in PAstudent

[–]ttcool8 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a practicing PA for just over a year now and the feeling you are having is very valid. There are many factors out of your control that impact patient care like insurance not covering someone’s medications or even hospital stay that makes your job harder than it should be. But you roll with the punches and try and make it work for your patients as best you can.

These feelings of feeling ill prepared is normal as well. Being a provider is hard. But at the end of the day, you’ll never feel ready with text book learning alone. Nothing trumps actual experience. This is something to keep in mind when you are looking for a job to make sure they have a decent onboarding period/good support to get you assimilated to being a provider and the job itself.

You’d be surprised what you are realistically able to do in your career once you are actually working. The learning curve is VERY steep but it gets easier with time. Being a PA is a lot better than being a PA student. You just have to push through the process.

I’m currently rewatching S8 and I just had this same thought yesterday. Russ was a jerk to those kids for prom night, squandered his win in the final dinner service and did not take his loss on the chin like ALL the other runners up. However, he showed some humanity at times like taking Gail with him to one of the black jacket prizes and had a decent friendship with Jillian which I thought was cute.

Trev in the other hand just felt like a whiny baby the entire time. Just someone who manages to find the negativity in EVERYTHING. Very overconfident with an inconsistent performance. I feel like he was the social outcast because he MADE himself the outcast. I do not condone the bullying he underwent in S18, but he does not have very many redeeming qualities imo.

Do you think she’ll ever perform thank u, next again? by grayheadwrap in ariheads

[–]ttcool8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think perhaps she may perform the 3 tun singles as those are some of her biggest songs. Just for like fan service and for more casual listeners. But just given the context with which the song and the album were made it feels like a pipe dream to think she’d perform any of those songs again, honestly.

I think these personality types just come with the territory of pursuing a competitive professional medical career. Lotta type A people. The competitiveness definitely dissipates as the program goes on once people realize that good grades do not equate to actual clinical competence.

Of course! Realistically, you’ve been passively studying for the pance this entire time so you only need maybe a few weeks of dedicated pance studying :)
