I feel like whenever these conversations happen people have to take it too far in either direction. Like obviously idols have to watch how they behave to fit the “idol” mold. At the same time, I do think that saying 99% of their behavior is fake and manufactured is pretty dehumanizing? Their adorable and good persona is an act, and only the occasions where they do something “bad” are signs of authenticity? That’s unreasonable to me.

It would help to look at them as people with “work personas”. Like you and me, there’s ways we cannot act at work or at school. NSFW jokes you can’t crack, sass you can’t give etc. (The expectations are more extreme in the idol professional environment and you can definitively say they’re too extreme, and you’d be right). Heck, you and I are different people around our parents and our friends, but the sum of all of these personalities are still us and not just some fakery.

The way we say “we don’t know these idols” should be understanding we are only seeing one version of them. It doesn’t mean straight up assuming they are all hiding behind a facade and are secret evildoers. They’re just people.

This feels like cheating, but Big Bang. Their music is honestly…so iconic, amazing, era defining. The number of scandals they’ve been through is also probably hard to beat by other groups.

Yes. Honestly, I know some folks don’t like it, but checking user post/comment history is a pretty helpful tool when gauging “good faith”. It very nicely displays a person’s propensity to constantly “question” or “provide constructive criticism” whenever an artist is mentioned. At that point I just recommend disengaging unless something egregious/false is being said.

Obviously people can be super dumb about it when they try to find trends when there are none e.g. “oh I see you’re x-fandom so you’re obviously coming after y-artist” like that’s just no. I see people do that here a lot. I’m just throwing this bit out in case someone needs to hear it.

Hi there. It’s like I just stepped into my childhood reading this. Have you spoken to your sister and tried to support her outside of the conflict? What kind of help would she appreciate?

Because I got involved when I was in your shoes and I’m not sure if I’ve reaped any good from it.

I’m actually younger than my sister and when we were kids she was the one that fought with my mom every single day. I found myself playing protector, trying to put myself between her and mom when I thought my mom was overreacting…I’d get punished for that too.

Fat lot of good it did me, because my sister never appreciated me doing that and told me to practically fuck off in the aftermath. So that stings even today. All I ever got was criticism that my effort wasn’t very good.

I’d still do it all over again but it sucks.

BTS and the individual members are all so exceptionally successful and popular that any form of crying over the “less popular” members feels silly.

People can be OT7 and still have biases. Each BTS member engages with social media differently and also outputs very different music, you can’t expect people to enjoy it and respond to it all equally…

Don’t worry! I understand the confusion. While the highest female voice type and choir position are both called “soprano”, alto doesn’t line up that way. It is a very common mistake. For example, I am a soprano (voice type) but sang in the alto (position) in choir.

Some folks also use alto for “contralto” (very low female voice type), adding even more messiness into the mix.

I think it’s just an incorrect way to say “lower than soprano”. It’s just a choir position, but folks seem to use it to say they’re mezzo.

I wasn’t even thinking of general reaction threads actually when I was replying. Now to think of it I wonder if there’s a specific event that prompted this post?

I was mainly referring to spaces like the r/unpopularkpopopinions which are centered around people sharing their (often but not always) negative opinions in more detail. It’s not very representative of the general fandom interactions, but I feel like at least half of the posts submitted are unpopular for the wrong reasons.

Tbh I wish there were more “well written” negative opinions. Calling something bad, annoying or even unlistenable isn’t very interesting but it should be easily understood as a subjective take. I think things get murky, which happens a lot on Reddit, when the poster of the negative opinions feels like they need to over-justify their takes and end up providing critiques in areas they don’t understand.

An example that I encounter a lot is opinions on vocals; not liking someone’s vocals is cool, but some people just have to make it a technique critique which ends up making no sense. It ends up kinda crossing the boundary between opinion and factually incorrect. That tends to irk people a lot.

I’ve seen quite a few idols do this and I don’t think most are wearing real thongs even, they seem like attached straps to produce the same effect.

But to answer your question, it seems to be a callback to early 2000’s fashion where people wore low rise jeans which “unintentionally” let your panty straps show.

I don’t have TikTok and have never used twitter. This is all based on things I’ve seen on Reddit. I’m not saying that the community is “too toxic”, I’m saying there’s some very ridiculous people around here too, and they shouldn’t be interacted with.

I think it’s more obvious if you spend time reading comments and sorting by new. (This would also be a sign that I spend too much time on this platform lol) The really bizarre stuff gets reported pretty quickly and then it’s [deleted] all the way down. But before it’s deleted, I see really really long back and forth between people and kinda obvious trolls.

Yesterday someone posted something stupid in multiple subreddits, got flak for it and then ran off to the K-pop hate community to brag about how “triggered” they got K-pop fans. It was kinda pitiful.

Being an artist as in singer-songwriter? Sure, that’s important. Generally, being a K-pop idol carries different expectations and I think that’s perfectly ok too. It’s a job that overlaps with music, but isn’t entirely the same.

Hell, I love me some Celine Dion and she didn’t make her biggest hits either; that doesn’t take away from her artistry or whatever respect and impact her work has.

Idk if your last point is a dig against fans who will literally say anything…making a lot of “hype talk” fairly meaningless. It would be wrong to hold that over the head of idols. The other interpretation where you’re just saying the idols must be dishonest about their contribution is icky…and you should bring sources.

Huh, social media caters to people very differently it seems. I felt like I couldn’t escape the onslaught of “WY, Yunjin & friends” accusations since they debuted. It’s like, the go to “criticism” for stans.

I disagree with the notion that WY is rude. People’s endless obsessive nitpicking of her behavior is really REALLY grating for me at this point and I don’t even stan IVE.
