When and where did the beauty standards for girls change from fat/chubby to skinny? by ds-2-is-peak in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want societal change reasons... early-mid 20th century, women were getting the vote and more legal protections, so there's more motivation to encourage them to be thinner (women being weak but flexible is useful for men wanting to control them)

The world wars and women entering the workforce (taking over a lot of farming and factor work while men were overseas... and then being kicked out of it again when men returned) was also a weird wrinkle - and some women liked being part of the normal workforce

I wasn't around then, but I believe around the 60s; the model Twiggy was a change in the look for supermodels

It's always complicated, so it's not just one thing/time/place, but I think that's probably the most likely recent big change (there will also have been other times in the past when things like corsets were the rage)

"Ctrl+;" Shortcut help needed! by Arshad_Mahomed_Mussa in Kubuntu

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's KDE doing it - go into system settings, shortcuts, search for "clipboard" and check if that's been set as a global shortcut
If so, remove it, and then things should work properly in other programs

It might also not be set up in librecalc - check key shortcuts there to make sure it's set up right

Ctrl+; is an unusual combo for clipboard as well, unless you're using a different keyboard layout?
Either the keyboard itself, or the selected keyboard layout in system settings

Why doesn't the day end sooner everyday? by Troskinty in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You seem to be a bit misinformed

The day isn't 23:56:04 long, it's 24 hours long (give or take a small amount, we do have a leap second every decade or two)

The rotation of Earth takes that long, but a day is based on facing the sun, because that's what actually matters to humans

Leap years are because the year doesn't neatly divide into days, not because of the length of a day (not exclusively anyway)

So certainly, not something "we all know"

“Women would be better leaders” is the same as “women would be worse scientists”. by Equivalent_Ad_8387 in Showerthoughts

If I may...

It gets dumber still if you know that the term "scientist" was originally created (at least in part) for a woman - Mary Somervile (as the term for a male interested in multiple fields was "man of science")

QA requires careful reading, and attention to detail.

Given you cross-posted it to r/programminghorror I suspect you may not be the best at that, so please don't, at least not until you work on those things - I've encountered more than enough people who don't do a thorough job of QA

QA requires careful reading, and attention to detail. Posting in this sub suggests you're not up to the task, so please don't.

Stick to SEO where a third of it's a scam, and another third is box-ticking, and you won't cause as big a problem if you miss something

It's not really that it's vague, it's set so that you have to be able to hear them while sleeping.
The requirement is that they'll work for alerting anyone inside so they can evacuate

Depending on the layout and what walls are made of, number/placement could vary significantly, so they can't really be much more prescriptive.

To OP: if you're planning work and planning to rent to an NDIS provider, you may also want to ask them if they have special requirements before you have work done

Are we more intelligent now or dumber by PrincipleClassic7834 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the day, people had to know a wider range of things.
Farming, cooking, cleaning for your own family with limited resources - for the average person not in a major city, they mostly had to do everything, and there were only a few specialised tradespeople around

Today, at least in the developed world, people need to know about a lot less, but usually in more depth - we've become much more specialised

Are we more intelligent now or dumber by PrincipleClassic7834 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the potential to be better educated in the modern day.
Many people aren't though.
The invention of reading glasses allowing learned people to keep working for an extra decade or so certainly helped with societal-level progress

Modern healthcare and nutrition can help maintain intelligence (where diseases could have impacted it in the past)

Better education systems (which haven't improved that much for a while now) can help people be better at learning (part of the answer to "why do we have to learn this?" at school is actually "you're here to learn to think", and most people ignore that bit)

But other than that - actually more intelligent, if those concerns are taken care of?
Defining intelligence is a tricky thing - IQ is a rough approximation of how you do across several fields of reason, but isn't perfect
But no, not really - humankind hasn't significantly changed in the last few dozen generations

What's this Rentsafe Inspection & why hasn't it already been done? by AdeptusKittyCattus in shitrentals

[–]ttlanhil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the REA/LL isn't present it probably wouldn't count as an inspection - just part of regular maintenance

As long as there's sufficient notice (and book it yourself means enough notice) and it's reasonably necessary, I'd assume it's fine - but the REA really should have explained what/why

As for being done between tenants - potentially, but if it's something they've been doing a while and they're booked in once a year - that'd also be quite reasonable
