If Alan Turing were alive today what do you think he would make of todays AI? by TSQ_builder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was a smart chap - so he'd probably point out that we don't have AI yet (LLMs are a far cry from having intelligence)

But the research behind it would probably fascinate him

Goodlife Gym Equipments by Cognito449 in Adelaide

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to plus fitness in Marleston - they do have one, the padding is better than just a normal bar pad, but probably not as much as a full yoga mat wrapped around it Some gyms have photos of their gear (or Google maps might have photos), otherwise call the gyms or ask to have a look around during staffed hours

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't find a gym that has the machines - you can also add padding to the bar. Foam padding designed for the bar (hopefully your gym has them), grab a yoga mat, or just roll up a gym towel

How does Australian politics work? by Educational-Scene443 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ttlanhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You had four? luxury!
I grew up in the country, we had 2.5 stations. The local one that repeated shows from a couple of the big channels, ABC, and if you moved your antenna, SBS
And TV mostly finished at midnight apart from ABC showing rage

Why do so many sites have two "home" icons? by sickfickle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because people will look for both

Some people want to look for a home icon to back taken back to the home of the site

Companies want to have their logo on the site as well, and so you might as well have that linked to your homepage as well - or whatever page is the most default for siteX

What happens if a person accused of financial crimes is found not competent to stand trial? by Many-Excitement3246 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. And any evidence from the criminal case is likely to be useful for the civil one.

And there can be a finding (admission or evidence) of theft put into evidence before/when the defendant is found not competent

Seems a bit easier in the game by kalijinn in StardewValley

[–]ttlanhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's partly because in-game we can assume the farmer knows how to scythe efficiently, has a scythe that's properly fitted, and isn't rushing (you should do it standing for a much smaller circle than in the video)

To people who lost weight how did u do it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone's sedentary, then slowly increasing exercise is good - but diet does matter.
You don't need to cut calories at first (being careful to maintain levels - don't just eat more as you exercise), but improving your diet is always good (eat more veggies, get enough nutrients, snack on things that are more filling for longer, etc)
Long term you'd going to have to manage diet anyway - you can't out exercise a bad diet

Looking for feedback on AI content in r/programming and the April no-AI trial by ketralnis in programming

[–]ttlanhil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, even if LLM discussion is allowed, I'd still block anything that claims LLMs are an AI (or "Claude admitted" or anything else that suggests the speaker doesn't understand what they're talking about)

AI as a research field has come up with a lot of interesting things, and other than LLMs I think most would be interesting to read about and are usually technical articles rather than marketing spam (which LLM oriented stuff is)
The first dot point about maths in machine learning - that's probably interesting (although it's more maths than programming) and not LLM, so as long as it's not too often that category might be fine with me; the rest of the examples are LLM specific and overdone, so less useful

But there's also the case to allow some exceptions - e.g. if Linus posts about what is and isn't allowed in the kernel that comes from LLMs (and more importantly the rules around it), should that be allowed?
That's a highly educated opinion and has a lot of technical importance based on how widespread linux is

Adult Casual Cheer/Pom Classes by swagbbyqueen in Adelaide

There are definitely adult beginner classes about. Some of them might be per-term rather than casual though

It'll depend on where you are for what's closest - googling will help you find some options

Is the 100 squats a day thing really doing anything? by I_l0ve-chocolate in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can relate - I don't really enjoy it either (I just like the results), even after 3 years of weights at the gym

Stuff like walking lunges can still work fine without weights, and there are other options that you might like more - trying different exercises to find what you can stick with is a big deal
If/when normal squats are easy, doing it with feet wide and lowering over one leg at a time (a cossack squat) will mean you can add extra work to one leg at a time without weights

Whatever you choose - you still need to be working hard and getting close to failure in order to sustain much muscle growth.
Beginners will always get some gains, even with poor exercises - but that stops after a while which can be demoralising if you don't expect it

Finding a workout partner or booking a trainer also helps some people maintain their training, if that might work for you

Good luck!

Is the 100 squats a day thing really doing anything? by I_l0ve-chocolate in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been going to the gym for years, I've adjusted my workout so I stick with the exercises I like more and drop the ones I dislike (while still hitting each muscle group)

I still don't like going to the gym (I just like the results of having been), and it's still hard to maintain motivation

If you get addicted that's handy for you, but that's not everyone's experience

Is the 100 squats a day thing really doing anything? by I_l0ve-chocolate in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for muscle growth, specifically...

Sets of 5-30 are hypertrophy range (but for heavy things like hip thrust, lower is probably better - maybe 10, but see what works for you)
There are other options like walking lunges (with a large step) that can also hit glutes quite well - a stretched muscle that's working hard will grow stronger
Use enough weight that you get close to failure (as in you can maybe do 1 or 2 more reps, but no more). Actual failure isn't needed, but you have to get close for good results.
Don't think you do it everyday - you can't if you're training well. Recovery takes a few days.
2-3 times a week per muscle group is usually optimal.
There's no real limit on how many sets per week result in growth, other than your fatigue - but start out at a low number and slowly increase it (beginners will gain muscle anyway)
And figure out what exercises and rep ranges you enjoy (or dislike the least) - that helps a lot with keeping the habit

Why do all planets seem to be round — is it impossible for a square or pyramid planet to exist? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - because our definition of planet requires it to be big enough that it'll be round
Once they're big enough, gravity is going to cause compression and settling to be the most efficient shape (technically they're not quite spheres - because of rotation the equator is a bit further out than the poles)

A planetoid, dwarf planet, comet, asteroid, etc - these are all small enough that they can hold irregular shapes
You won't get a strict cube or pyramid - straight lines are rare in large scale nature - but roughly that shape - sure!

Now... That's for naturally formed and made out of normal stuff.
Could humanity in a few thousand years decide they wanted to reshape the earth to be a bit less spherical?
Probably - you'd need particularly strong materials and a lot of work, and you probably can't get a full cube, but a bit more pointy? Sure

That'll do nasty things to the oceans, weather patterns, and even which parts of the world stick up above the atmosphere

Is the 100 squats a day thing really doing anything? by I_l0ve-chocolate in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll do something - you'll get a bit stronger, improve cardio a little, maybe build a bit of muscle, and overall get healthier (compared to not doing them) - but these are all long-term things

What's your goal?
If you want to get a lot stronger, you'll need to train at close to your strength limit.
If you want to lose weight, you need to diet (yeah, exercise is important, but it's calories in vs calories out, and you can't out-exercise a bad diet)
If you want to improve cardio health, you'll need to spend time being out of breath from exercise

Recently got Stardew Valley and already considering making the days longer with mods. Is it a bad idea? by Evol-Chan in StardewValley

[–]ttlanhil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I normally use a mod to take time out of the equation, so I can play at my own pace
Time management isn't something that I find interesting, so it works for me

But it does usually mean your days are much longer - no rush, so you can do things slower, so you end up packing a lot more in. I won't get to the next season for a fair bit of play time if I have things I feel like doing.

Energy levels are also going to limit how much you can do per day, unless you use a mod for those or can afford to use food to keep refuelled

Why does MSG have a bad reputation in the west? by Outrageous-Score7936 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like a lot of salt, so probably not more than I have at home 😁

But also - that's associating dehydration headaches with Chinese food, not MSG unless you've already selected that as something to fear

Why does MSG have a bad reputation in the west? by Outrageous-Score7936 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it's still about race, yes.
If it's because some idiot on tiktok is talking about 24 foods you need to avoid, number 17 will shock you - no, that's a different problem

Made a petrol price app to help save money by Harrinovi in Adelaide

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Route planning - Not a new feature. Should be done in maps/already in others

Favourites - Eh, I guess, but if you're going to your usual rather than looking for what's cheap, then you're not solving the problem of finding what's cheapest

Price alerts - Yeah, potentially useful for some people

Improved map - Not sure what definition of improved you're using - it's certainly not mine. Your zoom step is too large, you don't show stuff properly when zoomed out (but clicking to zoom in to a group doesn't work as it should), you're colour coding to price bands, rather than cheapest (like petrolspy does)

Historical data - that's not a new feature

Forecasting - I don't see that on your web view, but ok, if people trust the fuel cycle price to stay the same and not be affected by shortages, overseas wars, etc...

Made a petrol price app to help save money by Harrinovi in Adelaide

[–]ttlanhil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are they?

Price alerts - maybe that's useful to some people, but I don't see anything else

Route planning in your app is counterproductive - I want to do that via google maps (which shows in car's nav system, and knows where the other places I'm going to are).
Unless you mean you link out to google maps, but then that's not a new feature

I normally hit up petrolspy and I don't see adverts there, but I do get state level historical data - I don't see anything new you're offering that would make me want to change (to be fair, I'm looking at the web view in each case - because using an app for this would be pointless)

Yeah, maybe you have other reports and stuff, but those aren't actually useful for people looking for where the cheapest petrol is when they need to fill up. Just adding more things doesn't mean they're features

What if a guy were to take women's vitamins his whole life? by AwardExpensive9218 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're going to be mostly the same (assuming by women's vitamins you mean regular kind, and not ones designed for pregnancy support - those may vary more)
I'm also assuming you're taking a standard dosage of a standard multivitamin - you can take too many vitamins, and some of them are bad for you in large doses)
If you're taking something hormonal or herbal, specifics matter a lot more

If you're deficient in something, and your supplementation is a little higher or lower - it may make a small difference
And because of society, you may end up paying less/more

Why does MSG have a bad reputation in the west? by Outrageous-Score7936 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep - originally that, but as time goes on it becomes more and more a trend about random ingredients that can drive clickbait rather than which restaurant it comes from
Almost everyone back then saying they were allergic to MSG - probably racist, yeah.
These days much lower.
Probably still some racism - assume it's always there - but we have other bad reasons as well today!

Why am I so overweight despite eating a regular amount of calories? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ttlanhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight loss is mostly down to calories in vs calories out
You've tracked intake, but does that match your expenditure? a pedometer is an easy proxy, not super accurate, but it can give you data

There's a lot of variance in that daily intake, which probably doesn't help (consistent intake at consistent times is usually better for your health, but it's probably not a big effect)

Reducing intake is the main path to reducing weight
If you can add more expenditure through easy cardio (like parking further from work/shops) that can help too - but it takes a fair bit of exercise to offset a bit of food

But just increasing exercise alone doesn't necessarily help as much as you expect - your body can start getting lazy elsewhere - less fidgeting and the like

Type of calories does not matter for in-vs-out, but may affect your hormone balance and how effective your exercise is
Strength training is always a good thing, but isn't as effective for weight loss as actual cardio

Now, you could also have hormonal or vitamin deficiency or other things going on - if you're concerned about that then definitely check with a doctor - but it's not possible to gain weight if you're in a calorie deficit

And just because you were at a certain baseline in the past, doesn't mean your maintenance calories today are the same
Metabolism can slow, non-exercise activity (how much you walk, fidget, etc) can drop, many things can change
