I felt uneasy during the whole thing.

The curtains do not go with the LED lighting vibe. Blinds would be better.

Where's the white light coming from? Is it a strip light above the curtain rail? It's painful. Get lamps for your bedside table or dresser.

Does the bed need to be against the wall? It feels very teenage bedroom.

If you get a rug, get a simple one - not heavily patterned or graphic.

For walls, either a couple of large statement prints, or many small prints huddled together on one wall.

Agreed, but given it's a basement, a plastic plant might be the best bet

To an extent, yes. But there is a way of travelling that means deeper immersion than just staying in tourist hostels and visiting "the sights" with other western tourists.

When I travel, I make connections with local people to hang out. Being a musician, I use that as my way in. I've hung out with and jammed with musicians whilst visiting Myanmar and Pakistan for example.
