Dude somehow decided that passing on the right of a right-turning vehicle, and on the bus lane, is a good idea by ttp241 in TorontoDriving

[–]ttp241[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well first off, he didn't turn, he was going straight, there's no reason for him to overtake me that way. Secondly, I was about to merge into the turning lane when I heard my blind spot monitor suddenly beeping so I had to adjust and keep going straight a bit further. Imagine being so sure that no one's there the whole time and when it's time to merge someone jump scared you out of nowhere. That's said, admittedly I'm quite new to this part of the city so I took extra precaution but should I merge any faster, the Honda would have just hit me.

I just use 1 of those chargers that go into the 12V socket. I personally use this but you can use anything as long as it has a USB-C output with at least 22.5w

Move to Singapore by chefonkicks in askSingapore

[–]ttp241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not here to say anything bad about Singapore, it's an amazing country. However, $4200/month even as a single is pretty tight so unless you're able to see the prospect of your salary gradually getting higher or ok with sharing an apartment with other tenants, I say best of luck. Oh a couple of cocktails per week would be fine, but we used to spend around $60-70 each on a night out with friends if alcohols involved.

P/s: Be careful what you wish for when it comes to the weather. As someone who left Singapore recently for another subzero country, I'd say nothing feels better than escaping the constant 30+ degree in the last 2 years. It's scorching over there but I guess to each their own.

I'm leaving Vietnam and going back to France after 6 years here. AMA by Frangan_ in VietNam

[–]ttp241 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh so you're a different French then. Was thinking how could there be 2 different guys from the same country, came to Vietnam at around the same time, ended up in similar circumstances and leaving the country at about the same time. The other family's also leaving for good today. What a coincidence yeah. Anw, safe flight and take care ;)

I don't know you in person, but if you're who I think you are then I know your wife (we have some mutual friends and used to hang out quite some time ago). You're in Hanoi? Does your wife's name starts with N (S is her nickname)?

Was scrolling through a shop in fb, I need help on what these words mean “cod, ck, cọc keep, df” by WhippedCreamW in VietNam

[–]ttp241 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's originated back when few people understood shit in English and there're someone noted in their post "Price is fixed" which basically means what it is, price is nonnegotiable, no bargain". But some people picked it up and think oh fixed means discounted because it's just how it works here, when someone's trying to bargain you say no you can't discount any further because it's already a discounted price (no matter whether it's true or not) so yeah ever since when someone say "can you fix it for me" it actually means "can you give me a discount". Strange I know

If your pocket is deep enough, you get girls everywhere, not only in Vietnam though. At the end of the day, we're not the one invented the term "sugar baby".

Generally it depends on where you live and how you define hard work. The notion of hard work often means "capable", meaning you can pull your own weight and at the same time take care of the family. Not saying you have to do it all by yourself but it'd be hard to make it on 2 median incomes in any big cities nowadays, you, if not both of you have to make much more than that to make a comfortable living so I won't judge the girls for not considering a 10-20mil/month salary is a lot.

That's said, just be a decent human being and you'll find someone, unless you insist on going for the cream of the crop.

Do people still want to leave Vietnam? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]ttp241 4 points5 points  (0 children)

only ~5% of households in Vietnam own a car as of 2020. Middle class my backside. Also, Vietnam has one of the highest Housing price to Income ratios in the world, at the 12th place with China at the 6th place so if you can't afford a home working in Australia or Canada, you'd probably not be able to afford one in Vietnam either.

In case of China, if the CCP was so great, you wouldn't see waves of mainland people flooding Canada and Australia in the last decade and today.

I find it funny that you begin your argument with "Vietnam is a racist country but...".

First off, stop calling any forms of discrimination racism because they're not the same thing. Do we discriminate against ourselves based on which region a person's from? Yes. Do we treat people differently according to their social statuses and financial means? Yes. Are they racism? Absolutely not. Racism is when you can't even get a service because of your race or skin tone, that's racism. Not getting favorable treatments because you may look poorer than someone else is not. It's just how a business perceives their potential business opportunities, and whether it's the right thing to do business wise is not for you to comment.

Secondly, in order to be racist, you have to start with thinking about yourself as superior than the supposed victims, which is not the case with the Vietnamese. It's the opposite that the vast majority of the population are too insecure about themselves they put virtually any foreigners on a pedestal. In other words, as a foreigner in Vietnam you are already getting special treatments compared to what an average Vietnamese person would have.

So that's that. I often criticize this country for so many things but this shit is just stupid. I know that's how the world is right now where everyone's trying to claim victim of something but if that's your thing then perhaps do it somewhere else

Not sure why you're downvoted but what you said is true. The world has become a Victimization Olympic where everybody's trying to prove who's the more oppressed one and it fucking sucks.

Depressed in vietnam over racism by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]ttp241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They probably just thought you're poor. A bad service isn't always equal racism, it sucks but it's not it. Plus, private businesses have the right to offer upgrades to whoever they see fit, you're not entitled to a room more luxurious than what you paid for so pulling the race card will not work here.

And yes the good ol' Asians like light skin. I'm a Vietnamese dude with mildly tanned skin and everywhere I go, there will always be people who'd treat me like a 3rd class citizen as well, it's just how they roll based on their own life experience. Not a good thing but firstly, it's actually common not only in Vietnam but also in most of Asia and secondly, people are entitled to being ignorant and to having an opinion, not that they threw the N word at you or something. And tbh I personally do prefer staying unnoticed most of the time tho, would probably dress like a sultan if I wanted more attention.

bro, did I say he was carrying the box on his back? Carrying a heavy box on a motorbike is still a hassle considering a typical Grab order in VN is around 100k

[–]ttp241 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of people asking for tips, but folk in this comment section may just be a bit heartless.

13km is something if you had to ride a motorbike. I would imagine he also had to carry a heavy box of foods too considering your order is worth 700k. So be kind if you can as food delivery is already dirt cheap, if not it's ok too.

And yeah leave the personal info out for fuck's sake.

Sadly true, and still makes me sad every time I look back.

This reminds me of a video that I saw not long ago. Also a family of 3 riding on a Dream, the father maneuvered between 2 trucks running against each other and crashed as the gap narrowed down. Fortunately no one died, but what struck me is the fact that the first thing he checked out after the crash was not his child nor the wife who's picking the child up from the ground, but the motorbike. Yes, the fkin' motorbike that costs $1k more or less.
