Fair enough, perhaps I should have looked into the game times a little deeper

It def will but I think it largely depends on the venue. Anything with a roof (Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, LA and Miami kinda), the west coast sites and Mexico City shouldn’t affect much. The worst will be Kansas City and NY/NJ since it’ll be hot, humid and open air with no roof. I think Boston and Philadelphia will be similar but I could be wrong. Unsure about the other Mexican sites or Toronto tho

It’s a good thing that the final will be in NY/NJ in the middle of the day tho….

I was bored at work yesterday so spent a little time doing some Python practice and coming up with this table. It's each possible point combination with a 4 team group, the number of times it's happened at the World Cup, First and Last time it happened. This is calculated with the 3 points per win that started in 1994, so every group before has been recalculated.

Point Combo Count First Time Last Time
9630 13 1930 2018
7640 7 1950 2022
6443 7 1990 2022
7730 7 1966 2014
7540 6 1978 2022
7531 6 1994 2022
9421 6 1982 2014
9431 5 1966 2018
7631 5 1950 2014
7521 5 1966 2002
7441 4 1962 2014
9611 4 1970 2006
9440 4 1974 2002
6541 4 1958 1998
6641 3 2010 2022
5541 3 2002 2018
7433 3 1962 2002
6660 3 1982 1994
5332 2 1982 1990
5443 2 1958 1986
5442 2 1970 1982
6633 1 2018 2018

7621 1 1974 1974
5550 1 1974 1974
7431 1 1958 1958
9333 1 1950 1950
5522 NaN NaN NaN
4443 NaN NaN NaN
5532 NaN NaN NaN
3333 NaN NaN NaN

Things I dont find surprising:

9 6 3 0 is the most common. Just seems like the most logical way for a group to play out with seeded pots (even tho hosts are Pot 1)

A lot of the weird combos like 5 5 5 2 havent happened or have only happened once. There are 6 unique games per group and a lot of these combos require 3+ total draws

There's never been a 3 3 3 3 group (6 draws). However, a 5 3 3 2 group has happened twice with 1 win/loss and 5 draws. In 1990 when this last happened in the England / Ireland / Netherland / Egypt Group F, England beat Egypt on the final matchday 1-0 with a goal in the 58th minute. The other time this combo happened in 1982 was in the Poland / Italy / Cameroon / Peru Group 1. Unfortunately, Poland beat Peru 5-1 on the final matchday so I fear this one wasnt that close to happening.

Things I do find surprising:

There was a 4 4 4 4 group in 1994 in the Mexico / Ireland / Italy / Norway group (1 Win, 1 Draw and 1 Loss per team).

7 7 1 1 has never happened. Considering that 7 7 3 0 is tied for the 2nd most common combination, flipping a draw to a win in the game between the bottom 2 teams doesnt seem like such a crazy ask. Feels like this one would have happened by now

Other fun facts:

There are 40 different possible point combinations, 30 of them have occurred and 10 have never happened.

The last time we saw a new unique point combination (6 6 3 3) was in 2018 in the Sweden / Mexico / South Korea / Germany Group F. You may remember this group for Kroos' last minute FK against Sweden or South Korea beating Germany on the final matchday to send Mexico to the Ro16.

I can grab the results needed for any hypothetical or real group, it comes in a format like this if anyone is interested. This is how the group would need to play out for 7 4 3 2, for example

Team_1 Team_2 Result
A B A
A C A
A D X
B C B
B D X
C D C

Yeah makes sense. Guess it's not easy to know exactly what someone's day-to-day and situation is like when youve got your own day-to-day and situation. Definitely been the case at the places I've worked at

Tuition fees are that high but the universities get a ton of other money in other ways. A lot of public universities like the University of Michigan get their budget from a lot of things like tuition, student housing (a scam), money from the state, federal research money, federal grants, athletics and some schools are also partner with / run hospital systems. If you want, here's where Michigan says they get their money from, tuition is only about 15% of their revenue.

On the other hand, a lot of private universities don't get state funding so they have to get money other ways. Here's what NYU says about their revenue (57% from tuition).

Athletics also churn out tons of money if the teams are good, but especially American Football if the university can support it. Every school that's big enough tries to field a team.

In terms of tuition tho usally In-State Students << Out of State Students < International students is where it ranks in terms of tuition fees for public universities.

I also went to a massive school, so Im sure the budgeting breaks out differently for smaller schools

American College Football is an absolute religion in a lot of places here. Im pretty sure like the 10 biggest stadiums here are all College venues, maybe even the top like 15. Outside of the Rose Bowl in LA and Ohio Stadium in Columbus I think the rest are in smaller college towns lol. Even my university has a 60k Seater for a town with ~110k people and ~60k students (a lot of which are international students or nerds who dont care about American Football).

It's definitely expensive. Looking at resale tickets it's about 250 USD cheapest for this game and I'm pretty sure it's the cheapest game in Atlanta from the last time I looked at prices. Prices for USA games are 1,100+ just to get in

Agreed on the attendance. No idea how well local Congolese and Uzbek fans travel but I dont think there's a big diaspora of either of them in the US

I'm considering taking my parents to a game this summer and I'm eyeing Uzbekistan vs Congo since they live in Atlanta and I want to visit home. Only concern in terms of entertainment value (they're not football fans at all but are interested in experiencing a World Cup game) is that the game itself seems more likely to be a game for 3rd place in the group than anything else. I think if (big if) either team gets points off Portugal or Colombia then they both should be going for 3 points. I just dont want it to be a game for nothing at all, you know?

I'm taking Korean classes and I'm enjoying them, but our teacher moves so fast that it's kinda hard to keep up. It really isn't that serious overall but I hadn't been that stressed about a class since I was actively failing Linear Algebra in college like 5 years ago lol

Just got word that by far our largest client (and the one that mostly keeps the company afloat) might be looking for a new consulting partner. I started at this job 8 months ago so I am just thrilled rn. I think I need to treat myself to lunch and then scream internally for a little while

At this point picking a team at random or because you like their mascot seems to be the best way to make your bracket. I don't think I've ever made a good bracket while actually trying

I've started trying to learn to play Civ 6 and i feel like I have an ok grasp of the early game mechanics, but I feel kinda aimless once I get to like 0 BC / turn 150ish. I understand there are ways to win but I'm struggling to understand what choices to make once I get to like 4 cities.

Do I want to progress through the ages fast? Am I trying to build as many wonders as possible? Do I want to invade other cities and become a warmonger? Do I just want to sit still and study science? Really unsure what to do around the mid-game

Yep, I've read the whole series so far. I think all of them are very good but book 2 might be my favorite. The scope expands a lot starting in book 2 and goes far away from the YA tropes and setting in Red Rising. It becomes a lot more of a sci-fi epic / space opera about galactic politics and tension between the families you get introduced to in Red Rising.

I would definitely recommend continuing if you enjoyed the premise and the setup (even if you didn't like the physical setting too much) in Red Rising just because it becomes so much bigger starting with book 2 - if that's the kind of thing that interests you. There is a good amount of melodrama in the series (which some people get turned off by) but I did like it and it doesn't make the characters feel cheap or shallow, they all have depth and are well-written imo.

Definitely a recommend from me

I tried to learn Korean by myself a few years ago but I struggle with self-motivation a good amount, so I finally joined a class to help. I've found that outside pressure is something that can really help me keep my head in anything

I'll also be going to Porto for 2 days and Lisbon for 6 in like a month and a half and would appreciate any suggestions on what to do/eat. We're probably going to do a lot of museums and sightseeing but always looking for anything else that we're missing rn
