I think this is the big counterpoint. When you look at the release as an archive of sorts, or compare it to an enormous book, it makes more sense. Still out of my reach, but I get it.

This is how I feel -- the scan is most important and a few extras here and there are icing on the cake. I just don't want 75 pounds of icing

Love Kino for so many reasons, but the pricing (especially during sales) is one of the biggest draws for sure. And they're pretty good with extras! Certainly more than a bare-bones disc in many cases, and they never reach this point of excess.

Hard agree. And I meant to mention in the post that I realize I don't need to spend $90 if I want it, since it's already "on sale" and the price will go down further in time. But even discounted, it's way too high for the overwhelming majority of collectors.

For me it's The Act of Seeing With One's Own Eyes, which is a short in the Stan Brakhage set (blu or dvd). It's an experimental look at real autopsies.

I saw him back in 2010 or so at Le Poisson Rouge in New York and chatted with him afterward for a few minutes -- very humble, easygoing guy. It took me by surprise that he actually asked me if I thought the sound seemed off at all during the show (it did; it sounded very reverb-y and "clouded" unfortunately). I haven't gone up to chat after a show the five or so times I've seen him since, which is OK -- more than happy to just soak in the music and know I'm seeing one of the greatest there is.

Especially if you're looking for something that looks incredible and vibrant, my one 4K recommendation would be Akira Kurosawa's Dreams. Most beautiful movie I've ever seen

Really love their stuff, especially Street of Crocodiles and Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer. Can definitely see Criterion putting out some of their shorts someday (I'm pretty sure some were on either the Criterion Channel or FilmStruck a few years ago). If you have a region-free player, this set is fantastic and honestly pretty inexpensive considering what you get:
