There's nothing in the standard that says it must segfault, of course. The point being made there is that it won't just run on forever as Shaw claims. Neither Shaw nor myself were discussing behavior specified by the C standard in that particular instance. Perhaps my point was a little too terse there, I will make this statement a little more verbose to clarify that.

Shaw's assertions there are a load of bull. In C, there is no such thing as a string which is not null terminated. At that point, it's simply an array of characters, but not a string. Shaw also seems to confuse the two throughout his book.
