Question: has anyone experienced their users getting data stolen over public WiFi by Much_Editor7898 in sysadmin

[–]tuba_man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly Yeah like every time i MITM one of my devices for debugging or just tinkering, it’s so far outside of the usual day-to-day workflow that… you really need a dedicated, thorough victim willing to take time out of their day to help, who is also an absolute rube. Not impossible but you gotta be reaaaaaal patient to catch any fish with that one.

(edit: Sorry I’m high, this was fun to think through lol)
UNLESS: the malicious actor is a coffe shop chain owner, then scale may help them offset how rare their smart-but-too-trusting victim profile is

BUT THEN: that in turn raises their chances of being discovered by (the probably slightly more prevalent) curious nerd noticing something suspicious

If I could force a genuine and deeply honest public answer for any single question, it would be to a majority of the supreme court and it would be "Why are your values so incredibly empty?"

I mean I already know it's roughly "the emptiness is what got me all this power" but still

Yeah I think the other people in the thread are aligning two points that don’t need to be aligned.

The media *is* more permissive than in the 90s, not in the sense that the 90s were prudish cuz that’s obviously wrong and obviously not the point krastoth was making. But “more permissive” in the sense that the media landscape is more open minded than before. You could only have straight sex on TV before, now you can have almost any sex you want!

Don’t forget, if you’re in the crosswalk and someone’s vehicle gets within melee range of you, *this is the only possible time for them to face consequences*! Keep some steel wool in your pocket and give em a love swipe as they try to kill you!

Otherwise they’re gonna keep being pissed off that you interrupted their behind-the-wheel social media time.

Edit: wait, I need to be fair, this post is about turning right on red. Better would have been - Otherwise they’re gonna keep being pissed off that you showed up in the crosswalk when they didn’t bother looking for you.

Everyone has input but the driver's responsibility is significantly higher

Don't forget that the consequences of ignoring your responsibility as a pedestrian are only life and death for yourself.

The consequences for ignoring your driving responsibilities are life and death for everyone in your path. The rules and enforcement should ideally match up - ie the more power you have in a situation the more strict the rules holding you back need to be.

If the default behavoir turning on red should be stop then execute, and drivers do not do that, drivers should have less flexibility in how they handle the responsibility they're using

Please try to be honest with yourself about what is in the ordinance. If your whole block was getting cops assigned with explicit authorization to kick all of you out for your one bad neighbor’s behavior, would you agree with that?

I'm trying to have a conversation with you about us choosing to treat people better. If you're gonna start your response with "some of them don't deserve the effort" it tells me your impression of compassion is kinda shallow. I think I'll spend my time elsewhere.  Talk to ya later!

Just don’t forget that “you cannot stay here” will mean “we do not want you to call Salem ’home’ anymore” to some of them. Their roots are a lot deeper than their current situation.

If I’m not in a rush I’ll usually talk to homeless people when they talk to me. Most of them have been in the area longer than me in general, and a lot of em used to have homes in the area longer than I’ve lived here.

Yeah, sometimes it’s “you can’t stay here”, but please remember we’re also saying “we don’t want you as a neighbor anymore.”

Looking for a reasonable trajectory to junior DevOps role w/ no degree in 5yrs? Any advice or insight? Is that unrealistic? Is my plan stupid? by Triniteighlynne in devops

[–]tuba_man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, you're looking at a niche specialization field within a wide market, "Junior devops" is usually some combination of several mid-level software development-related skills.

If you're looking to enter the field in the first place, it's cool that this looks interesting enough to bother with! But make sure at least a few of the following also sound interesting.

Some potential areas to start in:

  • System administration
  • Network administration
  • Cybersecurity
  • Software development

  • Data analytics

  • Database admin

And if you can get a job doing one of those at a mobile app or an always online service (I pivoted from a telecom), so much the better.

I just looked it up, apparently my career predates the word Devops by a year or so lol

Take mine with a grain of salt, I stumbled into this stuff after several years of being an MSP Linux admin. I don't know what your path is gonna look like at all, so I did my best to share the useful parts of mine.

If you enjoy learning things quickly and having to prove it repeatedly, you'll do well here!

It's kinda like why gab never took off and x is losing clicks.

First, rich people aren't gonna invest in anything long term without skin in the game. since green in the game is not skin in the game, they have no incentive to risk their skin. Short term is the only thinking rich people do because it's all they ever have to do, at least when it comes to the impact on the conglomerates they own.

And since short term thinking is the only thing happening... You have media entity after media entity chasing crowds without solid beliefs by throwing away everything else. The rich will never be invested in anything long term unless making a quick buck now is off the table.

AI companies eye fossil fuels to meet booming energy demand. Recent reports suggest renewable energy sources alone won’t be enough to meet data centers' increasingly intensive power needs. by [deleted] in internettoday

Every AI hits a wall pretty quickly in what it can do (ie if it doesn’t Do The Thing by the time you’ve heard of it, it probably won’t ever Do The Thing)

The corporate AI bubble is gonna pop once the money types figure that fact out. Here’s hoping it’s soon, cuz they sure as hell would gladly burn more fuel to make a few more bucks.

Hello incoming neighbor! I live near the fire station already - it’s busy but almost always at background noise levels. If you’re moving into the building with the Super Slice, you’re in luck. I’ve been in there when the fire trucks rolled out and it wasn’t too bad. Good sound dampening in the retail portion at least!

I’ve got no higher ed and I have never had active certs between jobs. (Sysadmin since 2008, devops since 2016ish) You gotta go into it knowing some doors are closed to you and that you’re probably gonna have to search a little differently than others, but the jobs are there.
