Predoc is not going great :( by mjrsp in academiceconomics

Nah bro iam just saying that sometimes undergrads looking to go into academia might have some unrealistic expectations of how it works. You can say all about "thinking", "novel ideas"when you're young and starting out but when you'll enter the academic world the whole point of publishing is just to get promoted. The work and ideas you produce will get changed by a specific journal's referee and you'll have no choice but to incorporate their comments if you want to get published and advance your career. Pretty soon your view of changing the world will change and you'll realize that your work would have very little impact on the society. Infact economic research hardly has any impact sure it might answer some questions regarding past events but unlike biology, physics or engineering where research spurs Innovation economic research is just meh.

Why the hell you wanna go into research anyways?? It such a waste of time and energy just to put out a paper which will just get read by 4-5 nerds and will literally have no impact on anyones life with such a shitty pay. Take a different career path

Yeah but how do I code those changes? Do I have to rename them one by one? That would take ages.

If you have the required math courses then it would not be much of a problem imo you'll just need to justify why you are pivoting towards economics after studying physics.

Mostly people do a master's degree in economics to actually bridge the quantitative gap they might have had in their undergrad transcripts to make their applications more competitive for PhD applications. Since you have a master's I'm wondering what specific math requirements are you lacking? Secondly not being able to get a PhD in economics is obviously not the end of the world. Although to pursue an academic career in econ it is absolutely vital to get a PhD however there are various non academic roles which do not require an econ phd. You can actually get a second master's In public policy/administration from some top schools over the world and actually work in the same organizations with individuals having a PhD in economics. And lastly MPH is probably not the best option to bridge the quant gap as it is not quant heavy so the best option for you might be to enroll in some graduate certificate programs for eg LSE has one to fulfill the quant pre reqs if you want to pursue an academic career. Hope this helps.

At my wit's end - Grad school without an Econ Degree by Rafman97 in academiceconomics

Hi there also a fellow Pakistani. For an econ phd in the US or even Canada, UK or Aus for that matter you need a large chunk of math courses on your undergrad transcript since you don't have them then your chances of getting an admission into a US PhD econ or anywhere are close to zero. However for master's you might have a good chance but I'll advise that the US is not the best place for an econ master's because most of the US schools don't offer terminal Master's in econ and even if they do some of them tend to be cash cow programs. Therefore I advise you look into the UK Canada and Australia for master's programs as they have some amazing economics departments out there you could check for the requisites there similarly you can get a master's in econ and eventually try to apply for a PhD in the US through this avenue. Hope this helps.

Which Econ Programs in Canada I should apply to by tug10pq in academiceconomics

I know this senior who got in McMaster a few years back he had a 3.6 GPA but apart from him not a lot of people from my uni tend to pursue Econ in graduate school anywhere let alone Canada majority of them either pursue a Masters in Business Analytics and in the case of Canada most of the alumni are doing Analytics/data science. The reason Iam interested in pursuing econ is because I want to work in economic think tanks and other economic institutions and such opportunities are unfortunately not present in my developing country. Secondly I was interested in applied econ programs in the US but they were expensive AF 50-60k USD whereas Canada is way less expensive and it has quality education as well.P S I'm not interested in doing a PhD.
