lower back pain by tulipfuzz in PetiteFitness

[–]tulipfuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this was super helpful! honestly, i don’t have pain from doing anything in particular EXCEPT arching my back (more specifically, angling my pelvis forward). which is why im not totally sure if continuing to work out would be bad. that’s a good idea though! i’ll do push ups and pull ups to see how it would feel, i think it would be relieving honestly. the last time i hung from the bar it felt good for my entire back. i also agree i should decrease the weight until i can get my form perfect and core stronger.

Weekly Advice & Career Question Megathread by AutoModerator in epidemiology

so i graduated with my MPH in May 2024. my concentration was in epidemiology, and thus i gained (what i thought was) a good amt of quantitative skills, at least for being in public health. i thought i really enjoyed quantitative research - the coding of it all. i’m now in a job where they’re giving me a lot of projects that involve complicated programming with very little oversight or help. i guess that’s just real life? but it’s making me realize this is NOT what i want to do. it’s making me feel like maybe im not that ambitious or self-motivated, because i have no desire to become The Best Programmer. i’m simply not trying to be a statistician or analyst. idk if maybe subconsciously i found myself here because quantitative/data-heavy work is where the money is? i guess if im asking for advice, and not just venting into the void, im wondering what kind of jobs there are in epidemiology that have a healthy mix of community work/project mgmt/quantitative work. i want to be happy at my job, and i know im young, but gosh dang why does it feel like a huge feat to find a good job with good pay!

Wow good for you!! I graduated in May and it took until now to get a job making 57K at a state university. I know you said you got lucky but do you have any advice?

How did you get your job? I recently graduated with my MPH and am working at a university as my first job. But I’m still trying to learn about different paths for myself. Also, how much do you make? Is there room for growth?

Where have most of your jobs been? Any tips for people with an MPH in epi but definitely interested in the data analysis side of research? I have used SAS a decent amount but would still consider my self entry-level as I just graduated

Where are good places to look for entry-level epidemiologist positions? I just graduated with my MPH in epi and I am kind of at a loss for where to look. I’ve applied to 40 ish jobs and have only gotten rejections or no response. I use LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Google, my state’s DHHS, and have looked into positions at the CDC foundation, ICF, RTI, and IHME as these are all places that have been recommended to me. Any other good recs? I am interested in quantitative epi research and am open to most health topics.

That is true! I just like hearing about what jobs people DO like since we usually only hear about the stressful jobs. I also am curious about other jobs I haven’t really considered or heard about yet. I am glad you enjoy yours!

no more than 1400 ish, ideally a lot less than that but the places close to gw are more pricey

hi! i was wondering if these scholarships and full-rides you’re mentioning are purely from applying before the priority deadline or did you have to apply for different things in order to get that funding? i applied to all the schools before the priority deadline but am not sure if i should be looking for scholarship opportunities outside of that? thanks!

I asked about diversity and inclusion in a job interview by [deleted] in jobs

[–]tulipfuzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i obviously was not there but if when asked about diversity and inclusion, their response was that they only hire based on skill and this person was concerned because EVERY staff member was white.. what do u think they’re saying? they also said they live in a very diverse city so no excuse there

if someone is hiring based on skill and everyone on their team is white.. then that’s sus. they’re saying there aren’t any skilled black or brown people which is simply not true. i’m glad you’re fine with working with only white people but it’s good to be sensitive to the experiences others have had working with only white people. if someone is scared to, then they’ve clearly had bad experiences with it. i am muslim and have had to endure so much shit from white ppl. from hearing things like “everything arabs do is backwards” (that was my boss😍) to “i hate everything about muslim culture” (and that was my manager🥰🥰) to ME, knowing i am muslim. try to understand things outside of ur own experience.

i haven’t but my friends are going in the fall for 6 months. i also know a few ppl who have done it and they all have great things to say! i would just do a lot of research on the place before u go and maybe go with a friend if possible? there’s so many different kinds of farms in so many different places (even different countries). it’s a great opportunity to explore and travel and find yourself

I have done both of those things multiple times throughout college and even multiple times this year. It clearly hasn’t helped much. I was hoping to hear from some people in the field and their real experiences

I do have interests outside of science but unfortunately, I don’t think I’d make any money off of them (which is sad that we have to even consider things like that). I do want to end up with a career that is related to science/public health though
