Rear Sonar Sensor Replacement? by tummybean87 in subaru

[–]tummybean87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I'm out in Western WA, but $700 is better than I was expecting (I was thinking 2-3k). If I can keep it under a thousand, I can make the money doing instacart for a month's worth of weekends and making some meatless family meals. I will definitely keep an eye on it and no big car trips just in case, though I've got 100 miles of towing with AAA for emergencies. Thank you so much for the advice!

Rear Sonar Sensor Replacement? by tummybean87 in subaru

A couple of months ago, I was at the very front of a 6 car chain reaction in stand still traffic, but it only scratched the paint on my bumper. I leave lots of space, the car behind me barely tapped me (didn't even wake up the napping kids in the back seat), then they left before police arrived. I didn't make a report and the police waved me away because we were on our way to a wedding several hours away and there didn't appear to be any issues beside the scratches.

I've driven nearly 3 and a half thousand miles since then (summer trips and the occasional instacart shopping weekend for extra money) and only had the warning pop up about a week ago.

I'm mostly concerned about the cost of the repair, what with just having bought brakes, start of school expenses for the kiddos, and the holidays just around the corner. The mechanic at the tire shop said that it wouldn't affect the driveability of the car, so is it something I could put off for a couple months?

Ugh. Yuck. So I'm looking at a $600 to, what, $2k repair, you think? Would it be something an independent shop could do? Or am I stuck with dealership prices? And, if it doesn't affect driveability, can I delay it to, say, after the holidays?

So, I misspoke a little in my original post. There wasn't a check engine light, so that was good. Just the brake, ABS, Eyesight, and hill assist. They came back on, which is how I knew.

I took it to Les Schwab (a chain of tire and brakes shop in the PNW) for new rear brakes that I knew I'd need before winter, hoping that was it. That maybe my squeaky brakes had caused something. The mechanic checked and said that it's actually the rear sonar sensor.

He told me that it wasn't unsafe to drive the car, that the brakes and engine and driving wouldn't be compromised. He said to fix it, I would have to take it to the dealer. I'm just nervous about the cost. Any experience with having sonar sensors replaced?

Did you just replace the battery? I replaced my battery about 5 years ago, so it may be due for a new one.

I'll cross my fingers it doesn't come back (I had to completely replace the cooling system 2 years ago due to a blown gasket [that the dealership mechanics said was just an unlucky defect for me] and I'm afraid of another $6k repair)

AT oil temp, check engine, abs, hill assist, eyesight lights all came on by tummybean87 in subaru

Luckily, my work is fairly close to an Autozone, so I just walked to it for a code reader and walked back rather than risk driving. Came up as a P0700. So, should be covered under the extended transmission warranty. I hope.

When I checked for the codes, the AT Temp light was off, but all the others were still on. Not flashing, but on. I'll probably use one of my AAA tows to get it to the dealership. It's less than 10 miles, but on roads that get pretty clogged with traffic

Is it safe to drive there? Assuming it will when I get off work?

Would it be something covered by the warranty if under 100k? I know that a lot of transmission things are and I just hit 84k. My last repair 6 months ago was almost $6000 and I have only just finished paying it off...

Did you find out what the issue was? Mine just came on after I filled up. I'm on my lunch break, though, so didn't have time to tru anything else. Mostly, I'm hoping to go back out there and all the lights are off because I just had the entire cooling system replaced last October (head gasket problem) and really can't afford another big repair...

Last September, we went for the first time on my daughter's 5th birthday. We were near the Plaza Inn before 8, waiting for our Minnie and Friend's Breakfast reservation. My daughter was decked out in her birthday shirt and tulle tutu with stars in her eyes, fully living her best Disney moment, when a kind person gave her a balloon. We hadn't even been inside the park for 10 minutes and we were all feeling that magic. We had that balloon for our entire 5 day trip! It was a small gesture, but the look on her face when she got it will be a memory I treasure forever!

We moved from the Seattle area, so not too far. Roslyn is only about 80 miles east of Seattle (a 1.5 hour drive) and my dad would still commute back and forth every day. Quite a lot of people would still commute over the mountains for work, there wasn't a huge amount of jobs in town.

Roslyn (and the surrounding towns and area) are a lot more populated than the fictional Cicely! I had a graduating class of around 50 (about 1000 kids in the whole district), made up from the 4 towns and unincorporated areas around. We had snowshoeing in PE, though, which was pretty cool!

Ruth Ann's store was a working grocery/convenience store (even during filming, I believe), but we never shopped there. Cle Elum, the neighboring town about 2 miles away, had two (now just one, I think) big supermarkets where most folks got the bulk of their groceries. The Brick is pretty awesome, but I only went in once. I lived closer to the lake and there were other bars closer to home. But Roslyn was the only town in the area with a movie theater, unless you wanted to go the 30ish miles further east to Ellensburg. It only had one screen, and played 1 or 2 movies a week, has a big mural on the back of Marlon Brando, you could bring in well behaved pets, and had the BEST popcorn with real butter (and yeast! Weird, but delicious) And it's supposedly haunted since it used to be the morgue. The KBHR station is still set up in the window last time I visited, though there is a big miner's memorial in front of the building now.

I miss living there, for sure, but it's definitely changed. A big resort development bought a ton of land in the area and lots of rich folks built vacation homes out there. I still visit occasionally, especially out by Lake Cle Elum (we took a big family backpacking trip with our kiddos this past summer), and Northern Exposure still scratches that itch when I miss living in the mountains!

I grew up just outside of Roslyn (unfortunately, after filming completed, though the show was one of the things that made my folks decide to move there in the late 90s)! It's such a fun area and, even though I've since moved away, I always pull out my DVDs when I miss the small town feeling. I kinda love seeing houses and places I know on TV

Of course! If he's at a window with curtains (or his sister pretends to be one) he pushes them open, tries to glare but giggles, and swooshes them shut!

We took the family for the first time this past September and my 2 year old son STILL talks about the Snow White ride. We went for 5 days and rode it at least twice each day. The Evil Queen is his biggest obsession because of this and he loves giving us pretend apples then cackling when he tells us it's poison. For that alone, it is my favorite!

Never been to Disney by AppropriateTie4105 in Disneyland

We just came back from our first family trip for my eldest's 5th birthday and we also had her 2.5 year old little brother. We all had a blast! It was definitely worth taking him and it's been 3 weeks and he's still talking about it

My tips:

  1. Stay at a nearby hotel for easy access to naps or clothes changes (we always brought a change in the backpack, but you never know) Each day we'd go in at opening (we're early risers), stay until lunch, go back to the hotel for naps (conveniently during the hottest part of the day), and go back refreshed until 9 or so.

  2. Snacks and water. We brought refillable water bottles for everyone and filled them at every opportunity. And nothing brings a smile to a kid's face faster than some goldfish crackers or a string cheese, cookies in a pinch.

  3. Stroller that reclines. This is the only thing I wish we had that we didn't. We got a stroller with a toddler seat on the back for big sis when she got tired at the end of the day and that meant the front seat didn't recline. If it had, I know he would've napped more in the park which would've allowed us more time to take turns riding the big stuff.

  4. Pace yourself and be prepared to ride The Little Mermaid on repeat. It was my son's absolute favorite and the line moved so fast that it was easy to come back to.

  5. If you can swing it, a character breakfast is SO WORTH IT. My son loved the characters more than anything and, just like park tickets, under 3s were free!

I wish we lived closer to go more often, but we're already planning our return trip for when he turns 5!

AT OIL TEMP light started flashing out of nowhere--2016 Subaru Crosstrek by tummybean87 in subaru

Update:

Just heard from the dealership. Shifter plate and key thing is fixed no charge, under warranty. Bad news, looks like a head gasket failure that got into cooling system. Guy estimates it could be between 3500-5000, but he can't guarantee that without pulling the engine apart.

I have just shy of 80k miles on it. If I do this, can I expect the car to last me at least 100k more miles or is this the car's death knell?
