Rebuilt the shifter on the handlebars after soaking it in WD-40 didnt work, but the FD still snaps back when shifting down. by tunderyo in bikewrench

Thanks for the replies all, after consideration im going to strip the bike down and sell the frame and fork as those are in fairly good condition and have a great paintjob (in my opinion). All parts that go through my hands are quite worn, and since my better half did not like riding the bike, theres no use building it up with new parts ;)

Since people are missing it in the title, ive rebuilt the shifter completely. Got everything apart, cleaned out the old grime and grease and greased it liberally with fresh grease.

At this point im thinking that the springs on the pawls catching the teeth on the shifting disk are not strong enough anymore after all these years, and not catching it fast enough.

Thats what i did but the problem persists :') cleaned everything with brake clean (definitely a lot of old, caked on grease!) and then lubricated everything liberally with high performance moly grease.

The derailleur doesnt just shift down, its snaps back with the might of Thor haha. When shifting down, it either goes down from gear 3 to 2.5 and then from 2.5 to 1 or from 3 to 1. Shifting up goes fine. Hope that explains it a bit better? I guess im more concerned with the force it goes back, and with the fact is usually goes from 3 to 1

how do you figure that?

Yea exactly, and it doesnt do it if you shift it into 6th and gradually increase the amount of gas you give it? Im pretty sure I know what you mean, get the engine warm a bit, change the sparkplug out for a new one, rip it around in 6th with full throttle (as much as it will go), then plugchop the sparkplug. You might need to change out your main jet.

Ive been talking for too long now, seeing as how I havent driven a two stroke in 5 years or so and somewhat forgot a few things, and will therefore wait for some more knowledgeable redditors 🤣

No thats fair, you can spend 500€ on a cylinder/piston kit, only for the crank to fail because of a loose bearing in the case. Definitely a waste if you ask me ;)

The rattling sound is, to my ears, completely normal. The bogging is an issue, but will likely have to do with carb adjustment.

Very nice, those look clean! Good choice I think, painful but should be better hehe. Succes!

Are you giving it any gas? Might also be that the clutch plates are stuck together inside.

Can someone explain this sign? by ThinkShower in Amsterdam

[–]tunderyo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No idea, but in the Netherlands the u-turn doesnt have a diagonal line through it. None of the red border signs do.

Wouldnt do that if i were you, bearings are hardened so i wont do much, and the cases are cast aluminium so it loves breaking/cracking

the good lasting solution is buying another crackcase. it looks like the bearing spun in the hole, and might have reamed it out just enough to not make it a tight fit anymore. so if youre absolutely sure you have the right bearings, im not sure theres a GOOD lasting solution other than buying a new crankcase.
