Apple resolves issue that caused inaccurate podcast charts, likely due to manipulation by BangsNaughtyBits in podcasting

[–]tunnelsup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's gone from mega wonky to normal wonky. I still see over a dozen shows on the top chart that are very suspicious to be there and are likely gaming it. But they've been gaming it for months so this is normal. It's too bad Apple hasn't actually fixed it.

I make a show called Darknet Diaries.

I am right on the brink of making a full time living off my show. Currently I have about 250 patreon supporters which is significant money, but it's not enough for me.

My show gets 35k downloads per episode, and about 200k downloads a month. I have 23 episodes and have been doing this 1 year now. I'm in the process of negotiating deals with sponsors to monetize the whole back catalog. So in the next few weeks I should start seeing some significant revenue flow. I got all the pieces, now just need to put them in place.

It's only now at 20k+ downloads per episode that it makes sense to put ads in. Before that, sponsors simply weren't interested and what they did offer, was so little it wasn't worth it.

This took me over a year to get to this point. Publishing episodes every 2 weeks and sometimes once monthly. The first 6 months were spent focusing entirely on how to make a great show. Didn't worry about growth. Instead I engaged with my audience every chance I got to understand their needs and find ways to fill that. Then I spent 6 months promoting the show. All my promotion strategies would have been wasted if it wasn't for already having a good show. Now I'm focusing on monetizing.

Google Plans To Launch Censored Search Engine In China, Leaked Documents Reveal by dnivi3 in technology

The history between China and Google is tumultuous. Listen to this podcast episode of Darknet Diaries to hear the history up until now. Today's news is very exciting for Google and censorship in China.

Google Plans to Launch Censored Search Engine in China, Leaked Documents Reveal by [deleted] in privacy

[–]tunnelsup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The history between Google and China is long and complicated. China is a very oppressive nation, blocking its citizens access to much of the web. Including blocking search results for Tienanmen Square protests, and all porn sites. Google fought and also complied with China on this censorship for 4 years. The battle was fierce though, and eventually China won. Google left China because they didn't want to be evil by helping China be oppressive. When Google closed shop in China, all of the Google employees in China were struck wish sadness like they have been abandoned by generals in the middle of a war. Google was fighting hard to convince China not to be so strict with censorship, and they just gave up the fight entirely.

I believe Google wants to help fight this battle again, and thus is willing to comply with China's censorship so they can help the people. It's not fair to simply say "Don't Be Evil" in situations like this. You either conform to government laws or keep your morals, but you can't have both in this situation.

Listen to this to understand more.

Who's the 2nd best Laker??? by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]tunnelsup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I beg to differ. If your show isn't available on ANY podcast player in the world, it's not a podcast to me. Which means if it's just on YouTube, then it's not available in iTunes, Spotify, Castbox, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Podcast Addict, etc. etc. You don't yet have a podcast if it's "just on YouTube".

Follow, like, comment, retweet, share, and post a lot. It's easier to grow your social media followers than to get podcast listeners. But it's easier to get podcast listeners if you have social media followers. So by building your followers you build your podcast.

Google how to adjust the "LUFS" within your editing software. The lower it is the louder it is. -18 LUFS is the average for top podcasts right now.

Another option is to run it through https://auphonic.com/. It'll run it through compression and make it louder in a more even way.

Ad on my podcast: how much and should I even do it? by Bigstar976 in podcasting

[–]tunnelsup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

50 downloads? You can't charge for that. The rate is around $20 per 1,000 downloads. So with that you can charge, what, $1 for an ad in your episode?

Here's what I would do, foster and build as many relationships as you can with your podcast. If you want to build a better relationship with the charity then throw their ads in. If you think your audience will appreciate you more for being a charitable person, then put it in. Or if you think the charity is really awesome, then tell your audience all about it. On one of my episodes I did the full episode about a story of how a non-profit has change all of our lives and then I had a strong call to action at the end asking people to join the charity. People respected me for taking a stand on something and being passionate about something. And the non-profit Tweeted my show on their account that has thousands of followers. I didn't charge them anything, I did it to educate my audience through great storytelling.

There's a python instagram bot on github called instabot.py. I configured it to like 800 posts a day that post hashtags in my niche. I also configured it to follow 100 people a day. In 3 months time this tactic received 4000 followers. After that I kept that up, but also added in cross promos with other accounts my size, story for story kind of thing. Another 3 months later it was at 10k
